I think i called this in another thread. Klopp has obviously confirmed it. The other issue around this is that other than Lucas - we aint sold anyone have we ? Think the wage bill is getting too high. Also shows FSG tactics - make the fans believe we going for top top players with no intention of actually buying them. You guys just love to be let down. I have reached the level where i dont think we can actually compete to get the best players with all these other suger daddy clubs around.

"We have four (centre-backs). I don’t think we need more," Klopp said.

"Joe is in a really good way but it was not his day (against Athletic Bilbao). He made his life difficult with a few passes but things like this happen.

"In the moment I’m fine. We are open until the 31st (of August). We cannot force the things and we would never get a centre-back just because."

You left out Klopp's challenge :

'Look out there and tell me five that would make us stronger. Five. Then you win a prize. It’s difficult how it is,” said Klopp.'

Thats either complete horseshit or very worrying

Let's hope that this is Klopp calling someone's bluff. I refuse to believe that a manager of his supposed ability would look at those 4 CBs and be happy given our expectations for next season.
I dont think there is much wrong with thise guys at all. Its more to do with the way we play and the lack of a decent DM type player. The way we run and attack we more often leave these guys to defend on their own.

If we don't sign a centre back were fucked. If we lost Coutinho we're super fucked.

And that's before we take in to consideration the plethora of injuries we'll get over the season

Despite Klopp's comments I'm still hopeful / deluded we'll get a CB, however I don't think upgrading the central midfield was urgent, if we could have got Keita 100% we should have, if not, it's not urgent.

The comments are most likely a PR move, or just a cover for not doing anything that could get the club in trouble again.
Wheter or not we get VVD is another matter, but if people think we've been chasing one certain CB for 3-4 months with Klopp being "satisified" with his options, then guess who is deluded.

If we don't buy another to instead of VVD, then I'd say it's klopp

True, if we end up with no improvement at all, then Klopp is deluded about the quality of a few of our CBs.

It is worrying seeing that last season he at times played Lucas at centre half in preference to both Klavan and Gomez. Lucas did a reasonable job at centre half but you wouldn't want him there for more than a game or two but if Lovren and Matip get injured this season then one of Klavan or Gomez would get an extended run in the team and that's quite concerning as they're both shit.

I tend to think it is bullshit. It may be an attempt to get Southampton to ask us to bid for VVD. Which wouldn't please you either, right?

Gomez was injured the whole of last year, no?

Klopp is putting a brave face on it (I hope).

I can't imagine he wanted to be in this position. Perhaps it's just not in his nature to moan to the press a la Rafa, Mourinho and the like.

We've been relatively quiet in the transfer market under Klopp, we finished in the top four and this is the right time (perhaps only time) to try and make the leap with this squad. We all hoped and expected that we would use this window to push on and do what needed to be done.

IF we don't (and history is not on our side) I can't say I'll have much faith left in FSG.

It's what I've liked about Klopp. He just gets on with it in the public eye. I hope he's ripping the staff to shreds behind the scenes though.
His reputation's on the line, he knows we've got cash, yet hasn't spent much at all for 3 transfer windows now.

Whatever happened to
Naby Keita

He had a punch up
That made him step down.

Whatever happened to
Dear old Virgil?
The great Mbappe
And Christian Pulisic?

Whatever happened to the transfers?
Whatever happened to the transfers?

No more transfers any more.
No more transfers any more.
No more transfers any more.

So what's the point in signing Ox? Unless it's to have a backup winger for Salah and Mané.

Thanks for summarizing, and yes we do know that all these players, and plenty more, have been monitored and linked at some stage.

However taking that as proof for how they were ranked at a potential wishlist is unserious. Branding Mane a second choise to Teixeira and Goetze based on newspaper reports on all of them is speculative. Goetze were available for free, and is a versatile forward that could add strength to our forward line. Klopp has worked With him before and thought he could do it again. That doesn't mean he was higher ranked than Mane in who we looked at. They are different players, comes With different packages and add different strengths to the team. One doesn't exclude the other. As for Teixeira, it was reported that we denied spending € 38 Mill on him. Still we spent that sum on Mane. Hence it is at very best pure speculation to say who we wanted more. Klopp has allways been talking about doing business only on right terms, so when paying for Mane at 32 M pounds, and leaving the hunt for Teixeira at the same price it shows that Mane was a first Choice, but Teixeira could have been an alternative at a lower price (but was maybe not for sale at the lower price).

We probably seriously montiored Dahoud, and my Guess is that we haven't completely left him out yet. But he is a long term prospect were Gini comes With PL experience and is a differnt player. Zielinski Ahead of Gini? Specualtive reports from the polish guy and his agent that we have been interested... Hmm I am not sure if they are correct. We would be able to compete With Napoli on salaries, probably outbid them seriously if we really wanted him. Again nothing to bombastic conclude that we ended up With a Third Choice?

Brandt Ahead of Salah? Were is the proof for that? We were linked to him in January or so. But that link just died out and there is nothing saying we actually bid for him. Noone knows how serious that link actually were. And we nailed Down Salah quite early in this window, so there is not much suggesting we had many others on the radar. The Pulisic link is real, but died long ago when he stated he was staying With Dortmund. After Klopp having a full year With this Squad who knows what he felt was right for his wide position? Salah seem very much a early target, and not ranked behind many others.

And so we can look at all dubious links to players, without knowing the motivation behind the link, and Draw bombastic conclussion on how Things work and how we are screwed. It doesn't make it accurate at all. I think Klopp has shown that he is purchasing players he wants, and that he feel can strentghten the team. The Keita and VVD saga's are examples that if he doesn't get who he wants he neccessarily doesn't just buy another guy. Hence that strengthen the argumentation that Mane and Salah is not some kind of third sortiment that we just had to settle with.

Each transfer lives a separate life, and where some rules out others, other will not. But I am damned sure that when Klopp has identified Keita and VVD as the ones he want it is done on a far broader basis than someone sitting behind a computer, looking at youtube, and then being baffled that Klopp and the staff doesn't realize that there are better options out there.

TL;DR

A simple "I was wrong" would suffice

Still, back up for a presumed backup? @Mystic
Well, more than just Lallana, it's just his style that I think Oxlaid would closest mimic. He'll be competition for the third midfield spot, the one who breaks late into the area, and who drives the ball forward, a role both Lallan and Wijnaldum have played, can also be cover for the wing of course.

I wonder if he's happy to come and sit on our bench instead of Wengers. Maybe our seats are more comfy.
Jokes aside, I'd love to have Ox as an option, but poor Woodburn and Kent.

I think he'll make the team personally, a new challenge and the mentoring of Klopp could push him to a new level.
