WEST HAM have launched a £6million move for Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic.
Sam Allardyce wants the Croat to fire the Hammers into the Premier League.
Allardyce is targeting Jelavic after admitting defeat in his bid to land Scotland star Jordan Rhodes.
He has offered the SPL champs £5m up front plus £1m if the Hammers go up.
The bid is short of the £6.5m offer from Championship rivals Leicester which Gers rejected in August.
But Ibrox owner Craig Whyte will know it could spark an auction for the 17-goal striker, who has also been watched by Liverpool, Everton, QPR, West Brom and Turkish side Fenerbahce.
Gers want closer to £10m for Jelavic, 26, who arrived from Rapid Vienna in a £4m deal 18 months ago.
They are already tracking Trabzonspor's Pawel Brozek as a possible replacement.
Meanwhile, Mervan Celik has agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Gers.
The 21-year-old, expected in Glasgow today to seal his move from Swedes GAIS, said: "I am looking forward to putting on my Rangers shirt and scoring goals for the club.
"There was interest from other teams, but only Rangers' interest mattered."
Estonian right back Enar Jaager's agent is expected to open talks on a Gers deal today.
Neil Warnock has warned Rangers they will toil to get £10million for Nikica Jelavic.
The former Queens Park Rangers boss was speaking out as West Ham had an offer of £5m plus £1m in add-ons rejected by the Ibrox club.
The Upton Park outfit began informal negotiations last week and, according to Rangers sources, followed that up with a firm proposal.
On Wednesday, however, senior figures at West Ham said they are ready to move on to other targets.
Rangers will now step up efforts to sell the 17-goal striker for as close to £10m as possible, with manager Ally McCoist hamstrung in his efforts to sign new players until the sale goes through.
Warnock considered buying the Ibrox club’s top scorer before being sacked by QPR a fortnight ago and last night told Sportsmail: ‘I know what Rangers value him at. But whether they get anywhere near that is another matter.
‘I would be surprised if anybody paid that much and were not very impressed, if I’m honest. We watched him for a few weeks and he didn’t seem much to write home about.’
Warnock tracked Jelavic and Rangers keeper Allan McGregor after targeting three or four new players for his struggling side.
Sacked by wealthy owner Tony Fernandes, however, Warnock explained why he passed on Jelavic when he added: ‘He has ability, no question. But I don’t know if anybody knows for certain if he is a Premiership player — and that’s the problem. If you are going to pay what Rangers want, then the player has to be proven as a Premiership player, haven’t they? You could get Jermain Defoe for £10m.
‘I don’t know, other people might see it differently. People always want strikers, especially at this time of year. It comes down to whatever someone thinks he is worth.’
Rangers hope news of a firm bid from West Ham will drag other interested clubs out of the woodwork, with new QPR boss Mark Hughes joining Liverpool and Sunderland in the list of interested clubs.
If or when Jelavic finally goes, Rangers are set to approach Rapid Vienna striker Hamid Sahili.
The Albanian, also linked with Celtic, is out of contract in the summer and available this month for a knockdown fee after being told he can leave.
Sources close to Sahili claim Rangers have placed him on standby to replace Jelavic.
RANGERS manager Ally McCoist has admitted he is “in limbo” as he waits to discover if Nikica Jelavic has played his last game for the club.
The Croatian striker will miss today’s SPL match against Hibs at Ibrox because of illness while speculation over his future intensifies ahead of the January transfer window closing on Tuesday night.
West Ham United have already had a bid reportedly worth £7 million for Jelavic turned down by the Scottish champions, while Russian club CSKA Moscow have also been strongly linked with the player who is valued at around £8 million by Rangers chairman Craig Whyte.
McCoist has identified several signing targets of his own as he bids to reinforce his first-team squad, especially in the striking department where he confirmed his pursuit of a loan deal for Trabzonspor’s Polish international forward Pawel Brozek.
His preference remains for Jelavic to stay with Rangers for the rest of the season but the worst-case scenario for McCoist is that the 26-year-old is sold in the closing hours of Tuesday night, leaving him little or no time to recruit a replacement.
“At the moment, I can only tell you there was an offer rejected from West Ham on Wednesday night and nothing else has come in since then,” said McCoist. “It’s not ideal if it goes to the death, but I won’t lie to you, I think we all had a wee feeling that might be the case.
“I don’t have a crystal ball, but common sense would tell you the vast majority of business done happens towards the end of the window. There is nothing I can do about that.
“It’s certainly not an ideal situation, but it’s just something I can’t affect so I’m pretty much in limbo and we need to wait and see what happens. I can’t control other people coming in with bids. So as soon as we hear anything we will inform you. If he does go, I would hope there are things I could move on quickly. I certainly have targets.”
McCoist is aware that Jelavic’s absence today will be widely greeted with a cynical view that Rangers are ensuring injury does not jeopardise his potential sale.
“I absolutely know what people will think and say about it,” he said. “But I can only tell you the facts. Nikica has not trained for two days and won’t play against Hibs due to a virus or bug. He has sickness and diarrhoea. His wife and family have had it as well, while a couple of our younger players, including Jordan McMillan, have also had it. It has been going about. Our doctor went to see Nikica at home on Wednesday evening and again this morning. He says he is definitely unwell.
“I’m not a medical man, I haven’t see Nikica myself, but my doctor says he has sickness and a bug. I absolutely value and trust his opinion. He’s not going to make anything up. Medically, Nikica is not fit to play and that’s the truth.”
I apoke to Everton's Bill Kenwright regarding Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic.
I've learned in football that getting into an auction with a friend is not a great idea.
It's far better to negotiate between you to decide who gets the player, rather than cost each other money.
Bill and I agreed they were more keen than us.
We weren't out-muscled but on this occasion Sam had his eye on someone else.
