Let's take a break from the title challenge and have a think about the future with (hopefully - still cautious!) a season of CL ahead of us. There are a few puzzles to solve in the squad at the moment and it'll be quite interesting to see which way we go.

Fullbacks

Since the midfield sorted their shit out and the attack have been bailing out the defence in general earlier in the season, the fullback positions have emerged as the biggest problem area for most. We're short in numbers and depending on your point of view, quality.

At RB, we've got Johnson, coming to the end of his contract, on the back of what has been a difficult season overall. Kelly looks finished at Liverpool after his injuries.

At LB, Enrique (who I've pretty much forgotten about) has been out for pretty much the season with something or another. How does that impact his ability to perform next season?

Then there is Flannagan, a RB by trade playing at LB, who has enjoyed a fairly meteoric rise in the team in the last few months.

It definitely feels like an area that we can improve upon. Which side to we buy for though? Left? Right? Both? Do we keep the faith with Flannagan and hope that he can take his game up a few notches again thus saving us some money?

Central Defence

The sales everyone was expecting didn't happen last summer. Time for Rodgers to make that right?

We've chopped and changed most of the season at the back trying to find the right formula (though of course it was out of necessity at times too) and it seems reflecting back on the discussions on here that many feel as though we need to buy. Where does that leave Skrtel who has been a mainstay in the side this season and Sakho who cost us 17M last summer?

Personally, I'd be very reluctant to spend any more money in this area unless there is a deal to be had that simply can't be ignored.

Central Midfield

I thought this was our biggest problem area last season and couldn't believe it wasn't addressed in the summer. The midfield was all over the place at the beginning of the season but credit to Rodgers, he seems to have got them playing like a proper unit. The only question is whether they're riding a high at the moment or whether we can expect this level to be maintained going forward.

I suppose we don't want to go into next season expecting Gerrard to play two games a week and given that we often play three in the middle, we probably need another body to cover in midfield in addition to Lucas (presuming he's staying). Do we want that extra player to be more attack or defense minded?

Speaking of attack minded, there is a bit of an issue with our collection of young attacking midfielders. Coutinho sits comfortably at the top of the pile and is getting the games he needs to continue to improve. Behind him though there is the talented Suso who is having an up and down time at Almeria, Alberto who, along with our 7M, has vanished off the face of the earth, and Teixeira. Given that we're not going to be playing no hopers in the Europa League next season (again - hopefully!), do we have the games to give these guys? What do we do with them? It feels like it would be a great shame to throw away the investment we've already made because there is definitely talent in that group.

Forwards

Okay, so obviously everything up until now just fades away into the background if Suarez ends up going. At the moment there don't seem to be any signs of that happening, but it could all change after a couple stories in Marca. For now, I'm just going to assume that he's staying.

So Rodgers has now twice tried to add another wide forward to the side - last summer and then again in January. It seems likely that he will try again and we probably do need at least one more option. The rise and rise of Sterling is something we can't ignore and it'd be a shame to see a player come in and completely block his path. That said, we can ill afford any more Borinis and Aspas', and there will probably be enough games to go round.

---

So, there are some of the questions as I see them. I don't think we're going to get some huge sum of money to invest in the summer and as usual, the kitty will be need to be bolstered by sales.

How would you go about building a balanced squad that is capable of coping with all competitions whilst maintaining the investment we have in youth?

I'm not sure about central defence, really. No idea what the plan is there. I'd say with Skrtel, Agger, Sakho, and Toure, we're absolutely fine for numbers. It really just depends if Rodgers is happy with the personnel. I'd only want one brought in if we sell one of those four.

I think we definitely need a new young left back.

I'd like to see a dynamic central midifelder come in, I think we lack a bit of pace and power in that position, not to mention attacking threat.

Sterling is our only player in that wing forward position, so I think we definitely need another there. Konoplyanka was the last target and someone like him would be fine.

Finally I think we need a genuinely good third striker, I think we've got a bit lucky this season with SAS's form and fitness, and I doubt it'd hold through a CL campaign.

So that's 4 new players, or 5 if we decide to replace a centre back.

dont think enrique will come back for us tbh, id buy a cb and maybe 2 fb's, one winger and maybe another striker, id say just recall borini but he seems like the type of player who'd stagnate if he's not getting regular game time so id rather him go somewhere else, think we're ok for central mids at the moment and id like to see suso being brought into the first team a little bit

I'd say Henderson adds dynamism to the midfield though he lacks that killer instinct (not necessarily just in terms of finishing off chances - I swear if I ever see him lean back and carefully place spoon a shot over the bar again I will go nuts) that those at the top seem to exhibit. Can he develop it?

The biggest problem will be if Suarez goes but assuming he stays we have Ilori waiting in the wings for central defence, we need to sell Coates if Rodgers doesn't fancy him, I would sell Agger, we therefore need one more body in central defence. One right back, I would stick at left back if Enrique is back healthy. Definitely another dynamic central midfielder, probably the biggest priority and a wide right attacking player. Nothing too drastic and we can blood the likes of Texeira in the league cup early in the season. However we have to go for quality this time not potential.

Left back is a priority. First choice thing. Then a winger capable of interchanging with the front 3 and a youngish talented striker to challenge Sturridge and Suarez if Borini gets sold back to Italy

Possibly another CM who can score goals and pass more than 10 yards also

We need to build in all positions. A Key Success Factor seem clear. We are fresh and fine for matches. Look at how we ran Spurs into pieces. And compare that to how jaded we were after the Xmas period....

Priority is CM - Stevie G at this new role can go on for another while, but with champs league coming up, we need another younger deep playing midfielder who can cover and provide competition. We can replace other midfielders but we have no one like Stevie. Too soon for Rossiter? A younger version of Verrati (21 and under I realise!) please!

We need more options attacking wise - Kono would be ideal.

We need a decent left back. Magic and Flanno can cover right. We need someone else on the left.

Finally we need a decent 3rd striker.

Sell the following: aspas, assaidi, borini, kelly, lucas (assuming we get a CM in the gerrard mould). and reina. This lot could fetch 20m.

I don't think Rodgers will sell any of the centrebacks unless a ridiculous offer comes in. Having Agger, Skrtel and Sakho ensures competition and sufficient cover for next season. Wouldnt mind not seeing Toure play much if either Ilori or Wisdom steps up. Kelly is a goner.

Enrique can stay as he can play when we need to be more defensive, but we definitely need a more attacking left back who can suit Rodgers' style. I am happy with Johnson and Flanagan as our RB options with McLaughlin as our 3rd choice. Wisdom can play there too if he doesnt go out on loan. Coates doesnt seem to be in Rodgers' plans.

Agree that Gerrard shouldn't play 2 matches a week next season but we have to hope that Lucas regains his form by the start of next season. Having said that, wouldn't mind if we can get a real dynamo in midfield, someone like Vidal at Juventus who can play as a more defensive midfielder or an attacking one if need be. Henderson, Allen, Coutinho, Suso and Texieira can all fill in at centre midfield as well. Not too fussed if Alberto stays, but if he does, either Suso or Texieira will leave on loan or sold.

SSS will definitely be our first choice attacking threesome next season; but would be good to get another striker in who doesnt mind sitting on the bench but yet perform when called upon. I wouldn't mind Lambert or Rodriguez but I think they will be too expensive. Even though Coutinho and Suso can play in Sterling's position as well, would be ideal to get someone in who is like Sterling, pacy and direct. Aspas and Borini can leave if right offers come in though.

One thing to note is if we do make it to Europe, we can't have too many non-homegrown players (17+4+4).

I wouldn't bother trying to sell Kelly, he needs to try to stay fit for a year. I'd find him a loan somewhere. Same for Coates.

I'd be looking to sell those two next summer, with a possibility of Wisdom, Coady, Suso, Enrique, Robinson, and Luis Alberto to follow.

More half stories linking us to Fischer yesterday, I wouldn't be surprised if we did end up getting him. Seems like the right kind of player to boast the squad attack wise.

I also would have no problem if we pulled another Johnson this summer and went big and signed a top top left back.

He has been bobbins this season though. There is also nothing Dutch based in these rumours. It all seems to come from the Metro. Probably by that bloke who looks like Bert out of Sesame Street.

We will have Borini for forward options and another striker/winger that can play in any of the forward three positions

I'm not sure Borini is good enough, sadly. We need a player with loads of confidence and swagger. I'd love Costa. That's the level we should be considering.

GK : A steady, experienced GK to back up Ming if Jones leaves.
LB : I don't see this as an issue at all, we have Enrique, Flanno and Johnson who can not only all play there but play there very well.
CB : Not happy with Agger so either he drops to 4th choice and Toure leaves or vice-versa. Ilori should come into the group and actually play. BUY A CB as either starter or #3 CB. Sakho & Skrtel currently should be the starters.
RB. Johnson & Flanno plus BUY a 3rd RB. Either as starter or as #2 to Johnson.
DM : SG & Lucas. Plus BUY a DM with a better passing range than Lucas (who drops to 3rd choice).
MF : Konoplyanka would be an ideal player for us, versatile and quality. I want to see Teixiera get a lot more pitch-time, he looks class. Rossiter should be introduced but we may need another to play across CM, LM, RM.
Attack : Rodgers seems to be keen in bringing Borini back, from recent comments he's made. Add another high quality striker and we are sorted with that four.

We need to add about 8-9 to our squad and if we buy the FOUR or FIVE above and bring back some loanees and promote some youth/reserve players then that will get our squad to the required size. I believe we'll be given ca. 40-50M plus sales to spend and that could be just enough to cover the places we need with quality.

Sell half the team and buy a left back, central midfielder, winger, striker.

Contrary to popular opinion, with everyone back from loan lour squad depth is actually quite decent. We're in a fortunate position where we don't have to spread the transfer budget too thin filling in a number of holes. We can afford to go after 3-4 top notch signings.

Looking at our typical 4-3-3 system, which I hope we stick with, this is where I would add.

GK: Mignolet, Decent back up

RB: Johnson, Flanagan (I'm not a fan of full backs playing on the wrong side, so I'd be quite insistent about this)

CB: Agger, Sktrel, Sakho, Wisdom, Ilori, Toure

LB: First choice LB, Enrique

DM: Gerrard, Good, up and coming ball playing DM (possibly)

CM: Henderson, Allen, Coutinho, Suso, Box to Box Mid with an eye for goal

Front 3: Sturridge, Surarez, Sterling, Borini, Ibe, Quality attacker that can play all accross the front 3 and put pressure on the starters.

So that leaves us needing 4 players and a small amout on a back up keeper. If money's a problem we can leave the DM and keep Lucas, which leaves Gerrard, Lucas and Allen who can all do well there.

Out:

Lucas possibly
Reina
Aspas
Kelly
Coates

Loaned out

Alberto
Texeira

I haven't seen enough of the up'n'coming fullbacks on the continent (such as Moreno) to know whether they're worth the fees being bandied about - don't watch as much football these days. Therefore I'm thinking more about budget options, which probably suits us better as we're unlikely to have 25M to spend on a fullback.

We were linked recently with Adriano (albeit from a shit source I think) and I've mentioned a few times that's someone I'd like us to get. He's not a defender first (sorry Mark) but he's very versatile and would be a great attacking outlet for Rodgers. Are there any other similarly good budget options in the 8M bracket?

Johnson / Adriano* / Enrique / Flannagan.

Perhaps not too rock solid on paper but will give us an opportunity to assess how Enrique recovers and whether Flannagan is up to it.

Kelly needs game time so a loan / sale would suit all parties there. Wisdom also needs to continue playing so if the right loan move could be found that'd be great. Ditto the rest of them.

In the middle of the defence, I'd sell one of our current lot if the right offer came in (I guess Agger is the prime candidate) but otherwise I'd make do and hope that the improvement we need next season will come from Sakho. Illori needs to go out on loan again.

I'd sign a LB for sure and sell Enrique. Keep Johnson and Flannagan for RB and Flannagan can be LB cover too.
CB I'd let Kolo go and replace him and if monster offers came in for Agger him too.
I'd sign a DM to rotate with Gerrard and Lucas.
I'd bring Borini and Suso back in.

I'd sell
Aspas
Reina
Assaidi
Enrique

And if the big offer came in Agger.

And I'd sign shaqiri and Griezmann as you all well know

Mignolet/jones/ward
New LB/Flannagan
Agger/skrtel/sakho/ilori/CB
Gerrard/Lucas/new DM
Allen/Coutinho/Henderson/Suso/Alberto
Sterling/Griezmann/Shaqiri
Suarez/Sturridge/Borini

As usual, without any big names to sell (unless we do sell Skrtel or Agger for £15m+) then I think we would be in the market for just 1 big signing.

Big signing - either a CM or a Winger/Attacker (but NOT a striker).

I think it will be a midfielder, most likely more defensive minded one, unless Rodgers thinks he can get enough out of Gerrard and Lucas rotating that role. We might also look to get another attacker in, but that would inevitably mean additional bench time for Sterling/ Coutinho/ the new buy which might be hard to manage.

Actual strikers - I don't think we'll buy anyone and will have Borini featuring on the bench/ starting the odd game. Expect to see Aspas sold.

Defence - we will get a full back to fill the void from Aly Cissokho departing. I also expect Kelly to be sold. No idea who it would be, but don't think it will be Shaw. Who was the guy who filled in for Baines at Everton? He was performing pretty well I seem to recall and could be an option..

In:
CM
Attacker
Full back

Out:
Aspas
Kelly
Cissokho
Moses (obv)

I'd also be interested to see if we make any big loan deals as Rodgers does like that option. Maybe we will loan a young striker/ attacker..

We probably need 4-5 new players this summer if we want a squad that can compete on 4 fronts.
Goalkeeper:
Reina will leave. De Laurentis confirmed after Napoli beat Juve 2-0 that he wants to sign Reina permanently.
4,1 mill is the agreed fee I think.
Third choice keeper? I'd sign someone up and coming from the lower leagues.

Left back:
Depending on how much money we've got to spend this is one of the areas that we need to improve.
Shaw, Moreno, Rodriguez.
Keep Enrique as second choice and Flanno as back up. Brad Smith is also in there with a shout.

Right back:
If Johnson agrees to a wage decrease or restructured performance related he'll get a new contract imho.
Him and Flanno to compete for the starting role and young McLaughlin to step up aswell.

Centre back:
Keep Skrtel and Sakho. Agger will be sold imho. Rodgers has been pretty clear about his flaws and will want a change there. Aggers performances now will ensure a decent fee aswell.
Either keep Toure and loan out Ilori or keep Ilori as 4th choice. I'd rather loan him out to a Premiership team where he'll start most games if possible.
We'll be looking at Caulker, Lovren etc. Players that have the physical attributes that Agger lacks.

Central midfield:
We'll keep nearly all the players that are currently in the squad.
Gerrard, Hendo, Allen, Lucas, Coutinho. Texeira could possibly leave on loan. Suso could return ready to play a role. God knows what will happen to Alberto.
Think we'll sign 1 central midfielder as Gerrard will not play twice a week all season.
Gonalons would be ace. Kondogbia hasnt played that much for Monaco and there were some news stories about him being allowed to leave. M'Vila?

Forwards:
Suarez, Sterling, Sturridge are given. Ibe is an exciting prospect. Aspas will leave. Borini will leave.
We've been trying to sign a left forward for the last 2 transfer windows now.
Konoplyanka, Viktor Fischer, Griezmann.
Remy for 7 mill would be a great signing imho.

We definately need depth.
We will play minimum
48 games thats if we go out of every tournament first time.
Realistically a few more than that.

Yup. I trust Mr Rodgers to sign brilliant sexy footballers and make them play well.
The only player in our team this season who wasnt there last season is Mignolet.
Ive said for YEARS AND YEARS, keep the same players and coach them to be better. I hate wholesale changes, it never works. Spurs are doing this year what Rafa did every single year in changing far too much.
No massive changes. A LB and cover for more games.
