If we didn't need Henderson further back I'd play him as the 10.

I also have doubts Coutinho can do the 10 role, I think in this league you need to be more physically strong than he is in that role.

Missed bits of game, but:

From what I saw, we could have taken them to the cleaners, especially in the second half. But as per usual, our finishing let us down. Coutinho would've been a much welcome addition. We're missing him badly. Mignolet should've done better for their first, and their second was a schoolboy error in defence. This is still quite worrying, considering how well we've "imporoved" our defence.

All in all, we were behind twice, and we ended up with a point. I suppose from that perspective, a draw isn't the worst result in the world. Newcastle away is never an easy fixture. But they're the sort of games we need to be winning if we want CL football next season.

Considering he's had great games in the withdrawn role many times already, I'd say Coutinho's perfect for the role.
Missed him badly over the last few games. If we had him instead of Moses today we'd have been joint top again.

Thought Sakho was very good today, again. Much more assured on the ball and almost never gets dribbled past.
Long way into the team for Agger at present.

Think I'd play 4 at the back next week and drop Toure.
Skrtel and Sakho in the middle.

Coutinho created the most chances in the league from open play as a nr 10 last season.
He'll add A LOT when he returns. Hopefully next week.

Moses was garbage. Henderson simply isn't good enough - The difference between him and Gerrard was night and day.

Our problem was those 2 contributing fuck all and Sturridge's finishing being useless.

2 points dropped against a really average side.

I'm suprised Moses stayed on. At half-time, with Newcastle down to 10 men it was likely we'd see much more of the ball and needed a player at the no.10 with more creativity on the ball - not a powerful counter-attacking sort.

The obvious thing to do would have been to swap Moses for Allen/Alberto (who looked technically able when he came on).

I think we were poor generally. Newcastle was there for the taking and a more proactive substitution (Moses was contributing more to Newcastle's attack then Liverpool's) would have seen us get all 3 points.

Oh, do we work on defending set-pieces at all?

I didn't see the whole game but I don't think their goals came from set pieces?

Post match thoughts: Newcastle are bigger cunts than I realised. I didn't think that was possible. Celebrating a draw as if they'd won a cup. Then again, they wouldn't know how to celebrate winning a trophy. They'd probably explode or something. And Pardew is an insufferable twat. Hate him.

My local is full of Geordies and they seemed pretty happy with the draw. Feels like 2 points missed myself.

He hasn't been super. No. But we still miss him. And that has been apparent from the minute he left the pitch injured.

Like I've said many times before we needed another player like him before this season.
I'd be willing to gamble on Alberto but Coutinho will be back for the next game so it's too late for that any way.

The problem for me is that this current formation is not really making the best use of our players. In order for this 3 at the back thing to work we need a number 10, which Moses clearly isnt suited to on all the available evidence, and a midfielder who acts as a pivot between defence and attack, this is the role Lucas or Allen would usually play when available.

Given the players we had available yesterday we would have been better off playing 4-3-3, that said I dont think anybody could have predicted the sheer number of substandard performances from our players, and our midfield continues to be a real worry, Gerrard completing a century of goals glossed over another really ineffective performance from him

Alberto on the evidence of today is more suited to playing through the middle than Moses who should either play out wide or not at all, he has neither the intelligence or the technique to play through the middle. Alberto on the other hand looks like our best option in terms of an understudy to Coutinho. There still appears to be something fundamentally unbalanced about our midfield though, Henderson only plays in fits and starts, Gerrard looked knackered after the coin toss

- What Woland said; we looked completely knackered. Strolling around second to the ball looking leaden-footed all day.
- Your keeper should never be getting beaten from there. Cabaye was 30 yards out and the ball wasn't even in the corner. Rubbish goalkeeping.
- If Lucas was playing, Cabaye never even gets to take that shot though. That's the difference he brings.
- Could not believe he didn't bring Allen on for Henderson
- Suarez is so good it's staggering. I can't remember a footballer like him.
- Sturridge played with his head buried up his own arse. Taking 5 minutes to change your fucking boots? What? Ambling back from being offside continuously, moaning at teammates, throwing his arms up, and missing chance after chance. Stop being a twat.
- Cissokho is guff by the way.

I thought Newcastle made us look ordinary and pressed us all over the pitch in the way we should have been pressing them.
Their midfield had better control and a better first touch in the middle of the park too.

There was a game last season where Lucas stood off and the opponent took a shot and scored. So I don't believe that.

A lot of the criticism above is justified, and we're obviously very much a work in progress still.

But.

But we're annoyed at least partly because the performance and the result meant we slipped from 1st to 3rd, two points behind the leaders. Not so long ago we'd have lost the game and slipped from 6th to 8th or thereabouts, a dozen points behind. While justifiably complaining about our shortcomings, let's keep them in perspective. The basic trend is in the right direction here.

This is it, we do need to keep things in perspective. It's worrying though that we're still waiting for the form from later last season to kick in, like we've said for a while, there's only so many times we'll get away with it, the signs have been there a few times already, we seem to be playing on a knife edge. The midfield needs sorting ASAP, what's more disconcerting is that the blatantly obvious is there for all to see. While Coutinho is out, Gerrard should be playing behind Sturridge and Suarez, while Henderson, Allen and Lucas should be vying for the other two spots. Long term we need to invest in this area, but there's an obvious short term fix that isn't being utilised.

Its not even close to rubbish goalkeeping on the first goal though.
Yes a keeper shouldnt be beat from that range but the ball was moving everywhere in the air and then bent away from him. Dont think to many goalkeepers would have saved that one.
It was an insane strike by Cabaye.

Shame our shooting was so horrendous. 6 of 22 on target.
