Aggers injuries are such a fucking shame man. If he was fit he would be the centre half everyone wanted.

I would partner Agger and Cahill or Shawcross in a heartbeat. IF he could stay fit. But we all know he cant.
he'll play five games, get injuried and then skrtel will come in and probably stay there for the rest of the season, he (agger) will then moan at his lack of oppertunities.

I think the vast majority would agree that we need both. However, if we are talking about priorities, and we can only have one or the other then for me it'd have to be a centre back.
Agreed.

Hopefully we've got the cash to cover both this summer though. They're positions which will need covering in the very near future anyway, so we may as well get it out the way now before it costs us.

I'm all in favour of improving the squad in any position when a suitable opportunity arises, but I don't think we actually *need* another LB. To me that's more a case of "it would be nice if". CB is a different matter.

We're about to sell Ayala aswell, so there must be some movement on the CB front.

Where is he going?

Certainly in the case of centre back yes. We have needed to buy a centre back for a couple of years now really. Signing the Greek only papered over the cracks.

Not so sure about left back. We do have some very promising young players who can play there. Could be that by next summer we might not need to spend a lot on a left back.

Hull City have made an offer.

if we were gonna pay the money for jones then i can't imagine how we'd be priced out for cahill. are they asking for over 20 mill?

We need a new CB. Priority!
As long as we dont have to resort to Wilson.
It's rare I jump on players who've barely played and haven't been here too long, but I concur, I see nothing at all in the lad.

Still early days though. A season in the Championship would do him the world of good, and be a great test to see if there is any talent there.

I'd be thrilled if we offered 15m for cahill and Wilson on loan for a year

Wouldn't be accepted like

Cahill is being priced out of a move and if the price dosen't come down we won't be signing him.
Isn't he into the last year of his contract?

Johnson Cahill Agger Enrique

Defence sorted.
Aye, a defence that's never played togethor once before always adapts from game one and wins leagues.

Cahill has one year left on his contract, and its pretty common knowledge that Bolton have to sell if they want any kind of money for reinvesting in the squad. I think the price will drop the further we get closer to deadline day.
They're rumoured to want 17 mill, but he'll probably go for 10-12 in the end I reckon.
Hopefully we'll be able to offer them money + Ngog.

If they play hardball he can leave for free next year.

Fwiw Kenny was at the Bolton game yesterday
I'm finally getting my way, in a self-righteous pompous kinda way.

We're getting Gary Cahill and Jose Enrique. Two players I've been harping about for a year.

Now if Mata joins or Aquilani stays, I'm joining the "we're gonna win it bandwagon".

Johnson seems like he is as much of an injury risk as Agger is. He was injured for most part of last season and he is un-available for the start of this campaign.

Yet he seems to get a wider berth compared to the Dane. Why is this? Is this cuz he is English?

We need a full-back first before a CB. The more i think about it the more convinced I am. At CB we have 4 options who have already played for more than 3 seasons at Liverpool in Carra, Skrtel, Agger and Kyrgiakos....we have at the very least got the numbers. They may have weakness that could be improved on but you can't debate that they are seasoned players who have got games behind them.

For fullbacks we have only got two seasoned pros who also happen to be huge injury risks in Johnson and Aurelio...the rest are kids.

I don't think I've ever disagreed with one of your posts as much as I do with that one, Your Madge. His rougher time recently notwithstanding, Magic doesn't have anything like the injury history Agger's built up over the years at LFC. That in turn removes a main plank of your argument that fullback is a higher priority than CB, which also dismisses too easily the various drawbacks of our current CB roster. Our "kids" BTW are of high quality and have begun to gather experience, so they're ideal back-up material. Let's by all means strengthen at fullback if we can, but IMO we'll be making a short-sighted mistake if we prioritise that over strengthening the centre of our defence.

It does seem to be the case, and could be the only reason how anyone can justify getting a CB ahead of an LB. I hope it turns out ok. But Robinson/Flanagan and Kelly playing too many games could expose them and ruin them like it did Insua....who, from memory, started quite brightly as well.

Agger has been available for two full seasons discounting the first season where he was still settling into the squad. He has made 36 appearance in one and 21 in another. Johnoson has played 35 in both and seems to have started poorly for this season too.....the difference in terms of injury record is not that startling for me.....but then again it's just an opinion! and we do need our CB pairing to be available for the majority of the season as it's not a peripheral position like the full-back..so I see where you are coming from, but still want a full back first, as i mainly think Carra can still lead Skrtel and Agger for one more season.

Agger and Aurelio being fit would be a massive plus and with playing less games this season it's more feasible. That said though, I still think we need a CB and LB, CB should be the priority though.

For those who think we are in desperate need of a left back rather than a centre back, which potential situation would you prefer?

Going into a match against United/Arsenal/Chelsea with a centre back pairing of, say, Skrtel and The Greek or going into the same match with a full back pairing of Kelly and Robinson?
