Mark. Calling people "stupid" for having an opinion is very unlike you. I would normally be in agreement with your opinions but on the the Johnson issue Im definitely of the opinion that whilst he can indeed do a good job at LB, I would much prefer a specialist one. Yes he was shit last night but it was his first outing of the season and to be honest I reckon he would have been equally shit at LB. Im with Foxy on this one.
I'm not calling people stupid, the notion that he can't be tried or more successful in another role because 'he's a right back', IS stupid. How many roles has Gerrard played? Or Carra?
I have yet to see anyone have the notion that he cant be tried in another role. Im sure everyone was delighted ( if not a bit surprised) that he was successful in the role last season.

Last week when there was a discussion going on about this, a few people said "yeah but he's a right back and has played there through his entire career, so ergo he's better there". That's a bit myopic.

Glen Johnson has never showed himself to be a good right back over the course of his career.

Ridiculous statement!

BTW, I'm on record as saying we will get in a CB & Lb before the season starts, as well as a striker should we get shut of Ngog, & I believe CB is priority, so I agree with your sentiment, however a left footed LB will be almost as intrinsic to our success as a CB will be.
Hopefully mate, and then this discussion will be dead in the water and we'll have more than enough options at fullback 😉

If we get a LB and CB before the season starts then great. if we can only have one or the other then I would prefer to see us get a Centre Back.

I can live with playing one of the youngsters or playing Glen Johnson at left back for the season. Teams have been successful with inexperience at full back before. Remember when Ashley Cole started playing for Arsenal - he wasn't anywhere near the player he is now and they still did well. Teams have also been successful with out of position players covering at full back. The example would be Carra in 2001.

More of a problem for me would be if we are found to be lacking in the centre. If you don't have a solid centre of defence then you are in trouble. Anyone who remembers the dark days when we had to resort to playing the likes of Biscan, Diao or Traore at centre back must surely appreciate that.
You cant though. We havent got a left back. We have 2 promising youngsters, a right back that can be played out of position and a lad who can play there but is made of glass and put together with scotch tape.

If Enrique is available for 6 mill now, get it done. It will improve us no end.

CB is also a concern, but Agger, Sktrel and Carra are good centre backs. However age, injuries and shitness (Soto) results in us needing a CB aswell.
I have no problems starting the season with the left backs we have. So what if Johnson was played out of position if he played well there? Shouldn't that be all that matters?

I agree about Agger and Carra, they are good but only good enough to be the 2nd CB in a title winning team(because of Agger's injuries and Carra getting on a bit). Skrtel did show some good form in the latter part of last season but I still fear he has too many mistakes in him, he's a good backup anyway.

Just look at the title winning teams in the 2000s(and beyond), how many have not had a world class CB or two in there?

edit. and of course if we can get a good LB on good price we should go for it but not at the expense of getting a CB

He's a good footballer who mainly plays at right back, but not a good right back.

I'm slightly leaning towards a new LB to be honest.

We are in need to strengthen both areas but I'm slightly more concerned with the LB spot - at least for now where Agger's looking good.

Oh right. I understand now. ( ???)

The thing about Glen though, is that he seems to be made of the same stuff that keeps Aurelios bodyparts together.

We need a new left back.

With Michah Richards improving a lot by all accounts, will Johnson be happy playing at LB in the run up to Euro2012.

I wouldn't be surprised if he sought assurances that he'll be played at RB.

According to a credible poster on Est we're after Branislav Ivanovic. His agent is apperantly at Melwood today.

Is that the Chelsea player who keeps scoring headers against us?

Our centre back options seem to be diminishing somewhat...............

Hull City table bid for Liverpool defender Daniel Ayala

Hull City manager Nigel Pearson has confirmed they have made a bid for Liverpool defender Daniel Ayala, reports BBC Radio Humberside.

Ayala, 20, made 12 appearances for the Championship side during a loan period last season.

The Tigers were previously linked with a loan move for the Spaniard after Paul McShane was ruled out for several weeks with a calf injury.

Pearson said: "We've enquired after the player, we've put a bid in."

He added: "Whether that develops before the weekend I don't know.

"We'll try and do it as we always do it, in a quiet way, but for sure that's where we're at."

The Seville-born centre-back has made five first-team appearances for Liverpool, and also had a loan spell at Derby last season.

According to Sky Sports News(they're hit and miss i know) Arsenal will go for Scott Dann if they fail to land Jagielka.

Yeah, twattergang seems to think its between us an the arse re Dann. Being a boyhood red and ex season ticket holder surley we have an advantage..

Hope so. That might leave us a clear run at Cahill.

Jagielka would be a tremendous signing for the Arse BTW.
He would be yeah but Everton are reportedly asking for £20 million and Arsenal won't go anywhere near that.

Another Everton defender i like is Distin. He's a top player in my view. very underrated.

I'd have said that a year or more ago, he's had his injury problems of late though.
