Cahill would appear to offer best value for money. What sort of prices are being bandied around for these lads?

Bolton want 17 mill for Cahill

Shawcross is valued at 12 or something

Dann is rumoured 8 mill

Jagielka is what 16-18 mill or something

We need both. Its as simple as that.
But you still can get away with having just an 'ok' player playing full back whereas you always need a dominant CB to challenge for titles.

CB should be by far the biggest priority at the moment. No contest.
You cant though. We havent got a left back. We have 2 promising youngsters, a right back that can be played out of position and a lad who can play there but is made of glass and put together with scotch tape.

If Enrique is available for 6 mill now, get it done. It will improve us no end.

CB is also a concern, but Agger, Sktrel and Carra are good centre backs. However age, injuries and shitness (Soto) results in us needing a CB aswell.
Hansern, this is in no way reflective of what I think of you as a poster but that is one of the worst posts I've read in some time. I could be quiffing but anyone who thinks going into a season with Carra, Skrtel and Agger as our CB's is ok but having Aurelio, GJ and two very promising kids at LB is our biggest concern should give himself an uppercut.

Even if (and it's more iffy than Britney claiming to be a virgin bride), even if Skrtel, Agger and Carra were likely to go through the season without injury concerns, not one possible partnership would give us any surety in the air. We need a big mother of a CB who can work well with Carra and Agger. That's the most important area for this club to address.

I'm well aware that Enrique is almost certain/signed but if we go into the season with a new 6m LB and don't sign a powerhouse CB we'll leak goals badly. What's more all the management would deserve to have their heads handed to them on a plate for being so bloody stupid. No exceptions.

Read it again. Im not saying that at all. Im saying we need both. We have 3 good centre backs, but need one more because of age, injuries and shitness.

We dont have a first team left back. We need one.

In other words, we need a centre back AND a left back.

I think the vast majority would agree that we need both. However, if we are talking about priorities, and we can only have one or the other then for me it'd have to be a centre back.

As a matter of interest I just checked out the height of these guys since I do remember more than one poster saying Cahill was a short-arse and not a dominant / good header of the ball.

Cahill - 6'2" (age 25)
Dann - 6'2" (age 24)
Shawcross - 6'3" (age 23)
Jagielka - 6'0" (age 28) not on our radar I know but interesting to compare.

Cahill is a very good header of the ball. As long as we dont get Shawcross Im happy.

Sktrel will miss the start of the season. Not good.
Or maybe it is good because it will force us to sign a CB now rather than waiting till January/next summer.

Shawcross is not a bad player at all.

Not a bad player, but slow, a bit clumsy and not very good with the ball at his feet.

Id rather have Cahill.
He's good in the air, has decent pace and is comfortable with ball. A much better fit.

Cahill has 1 year left on his contact. Bolton have to sell evantually or lose him on a free.
Shawcross has 3 more years on his and Stoke doesnt want to or have to sell.

Im very curious on how that equals to twice the price.

Shawcross is probably faster than Hyypia and Morientes, but pace is definetly not his strenght.

I've thought about this and here is what i have decided...

If we get a LB first, i'm going to think we needed a CB first.

If we get a CB first, i'm going to think we needed a LB first.

I'm going to be unhappy about all our transfers and assume Kenny doesn't know what he is doing.

Yeah, I was actually thinking along those lines myself. Signing a new cb must surley be a priority now.

I'd like to see us sign hangeland, he reminds me of big Sami.
Hes too old. Whats wrong with Skrtel now by the way?

There's nothing wrong with Skrtel, or indeed Carra or Agger for that matter, besides the obvious in each case, its that none of them are commanding in the air. A leader in the air plus any one of those will lead to a better defence than any combination of the three.

if we dont sign a CB... we will be fucked during the year.

Perhaps we will see Carroll play a couple of games in CB? Wouldnt that just get the forums rocking.. The media would have a field day.

I think anyone who watches the prem on a regular basis would prefer Cahill over the other options. He's a class CB.
I dont have a massive problem with Shawcross or even Dann for that matter. I also like Samba and Haangaland so i think there is plenty of options.
The fact that Coyle has said he will sell Cahill and the fact Cahill is the best CB out of the lot would mean i would go all out for him if possible.

Quite possibly neither for the moment, given that neither will play a full season for various reasons. If one does go, it would have to be Agger as we could still get a decent fee for him.

Yeah I think you need four, so Carra, Agger, Skrtel and a new centre back please. Soto will probably go when we bring another in.

We're about to sell Ayala aswell, so there must be some movement on the CB front.

Making way doesn't have to mean selling. Cahill would start, Dann/Shawcross may not. Carra, Cahill, Agger & Skrtel looks a damn fine CB line-up to me.

I meant Skrtel's reported injury.

1057: FOOTBALL - Bolton manager Owen Coyle has dismissed speculation linking star defender Gary Cahill with a big-money move to Liverpool as "without foundation". Coyle said: "It is irresponsible. To just reel words off is in poor taste. Nothing surprises you in football but people should have more knowledge of the background for anything before they write it. I am not raging about it. I am just making a point."

Ah... In that case I don't know

Aggers injuries are such a fucking shame man. If he was fit he would be the centre half everyone wanted.

I would partner Agger and Cahill or Shawcross in a heartbeat. IF he could stay fit. But we all know he cant.
