Just thinking about a player we have been heavily linked with only to lose out last minute to a rival club, we have had a few players we were very to signing, apparently, only to lose out to the likes of Chelsea and Spurs.
Just wondered what the assessment of those players was? and how many of them.
I could think of

Sigurdsson - Spurs - back at Swansea now, didn't do well at all
Lewis Holtby - Spurs - back in Germany after not doing a huge amount at Spurs
Salah - Chelsea - Fiorentina last season and likely to be back in Italy again
Willian -Chelsea - Didn't really play a huge amount did he
Konoplayanka - At Sevile now
Mkhitaryan - Not seen much of him..ever
Shakiri - Inter - Didn't do much and battling go Stoke now?

I'm sure there are a bundle more but couldn't help think glad we missed out on a bundle of those, though of course Brendan would have coached them all into world beaters.

Not all of those were genuine targets, especially Shaqiri but also I think Holtby too?

Willian has done well at Chelsea.

I think Salah would've been a good value signing for us, personally.

Konoplyanka is the one who seems to have done the least. Garnered very little interest even as a free agent.

Diego Costa is the one it was a real shame to miss out on I guess.

Sanchez would have been fantastic too.
I think top 4 was a certainty if we signed him with the Suarez cash.

I'm not sure how much of a goer Sanchez was? didn't he just refuse to come to us?

(Thanks LTW, thought I would just pop in and say whaagowan)

Yes it was a real body blow losing him to Arsenal.

I wonder what went wrong there. Was the London thing all-conquering or could we have thrown more money at him?

Too late to the party.

By the time we pitched up he was leaving arm in arm with Wenger.

Yeah seemingly the whole wanting to live in London thing was the major stumbling block.
We were definitely interested which is slightly encouraging.
Basically the opposite of what's going with this whole Benteke saga.

Lee Bowyer
Lucas Neil
Luke Young

They were all wank.

God I remember Bowyer, deal actually agreed at £7.5m - big money then.

Dear oh dear Houllier.

The one I always remember most is Dani Alves. It was so frustrating we couldn't get that done.

Common sense.

Sanchez was at Barcelona when he was 23/24? He was fantastic there too. Led his country to the Copa? Check ... Suarez is great - I love him (you know this) but Sanchez is ahead of his curve currently ... whether he matches it as Suarez's ascent with us was phenomenal is what remains to be seen.

We aren't talking about where they are on their current curves, you said Sachez is the same player as Suarez, he's not, Suarez is a level above. That isn't red tinted goggles, that's just common sense.

Sanchez got flogged for Suarez, there's only a couple of years between them.

Good player but not, and not likely to be, in Suarez's league (ie top 5 player in the world)

Same type of player isn't saying they're at the same level ... Suarez is a few levels above currently imo.

Ged pulled the plug on Bowyer after meeting him and saying he wasn't the right mindset for us. So ultimately did a good thing.

Lots of their fans I've spoken to don't seem to rate him, it's thoroughly bizarre, great player.

Typical Mourinho signing. Neat, tidy, works hard, understands how games work, good decision maker under pressure, good technique, a winner.
