We paid 100 million or so for naby and ox, the cheek to say they think 65 is too much for anyone years later…

Naby (similar price to Caicedo) was rated one of the very best players in the BL (huge pity he couldn't replicate that and turned into a sick note).
Caicedo has played just 8 PL games last season and 18 this. From a one year loan to Beerschot after buying for €5m to £75m in 6 months (and half a season of football this season) of a return to the PL.

That £75m has more to do with how he fits into the Brighton team, and the potential for an EL slot, plus an inability to replace him at short notice, than his actual worth, which is likely to be in the £30-40m bracket.

And the fact that Chelsea would probably pay £75m for him if they lose a few more games. Bloom is a poker ace. He's going to take Boehly to the cleaners for this, and rightly so.

Both had proved themselves in big leagues before. In fact most of use can trace Keita’s pro Ito the Guinea FA’s insisting that he plays/travels while clearly injured. Never recovered from that.

£100 million for Caicedo is fanciful nonsense. Unless you’re Brighton, of course, who will quietly be laughing all the way to the bank as they replace him with a similar player for £8 million.

That's my point.. he was banging on the we aren't interested drum since Jan 1st.

We can't be out the race if we were never in it.

He's becoming the English ballbag.
We were never in for him because we had already spent funds for next season on gakpo so was there was no way we were ever going to spend even half of that proposed fee on him.

I love how FIFA are going to come down on the Chelseas of this world with new FFP rules. Hopefully these new regulations will at the very least prevent Chelsea from spending like crazy over the next 2-5 years when the accumulated amortisation on the books of all these players will see them close to FFP limits.
@Beamrider ?

Uh hello is that Brighton? Yea we don’t want to pay that for your player you see we paid something very similar 5 years ago for a player with a lot more promise and top level experience…

how did that work out for you?

well thanks for taking our call

Swings and Roundabouts. What's that insurance get out statement/clause? History is not an indicator of future performance?

I doubt FIFA’s changes will affect the deals they have done so far, and Chelsea would obviously argue they might not have done those deals if they had known the changes would happen.
The truth is that these long contracts only give them a small amount of headroom (e.g. a 7 year deal, as opposed to 5, for a £70m player would give them £4m a year headroom for the first 5 years, and then add £10m a year in years 6 and 7).
The bigger issue for them is they’re likely to lose 10s of millions by not qualifying for the Champions League next year (and possibly even Europe at all) and that will put these small savings on amortisation into the shade. We’re obviously in the same position, but we’ll have a lot more wiggle room.
Plus, if these players turn out to be shite and/or injury prone then they’ll have an extra 2 years paying them £10m a year for contributing fuck all.
I reckon at least one of these deals will bite them in the arse long-term (my money would be on Fofana from an injury perspective).

Ben Jacobs said we were never interested in the first place.
We're not in the race for anyone other than sucking off Jude's dad in the hope he can broker some deal between Dortmund and us to sell him for a freddo and a bag of cheesy chips.

What Arsenal do has no bearing on us.

We either don't value Caicedo that highly or don't have the money for him right now.

When have we ever spent 100m on 2 players in 1 window without selling someone?

Caicedo is a decent player but certainly not worth 60M, let alone 100M.

In these recession times, I'd pay Brighton 20M if they're lucky. Figures are over-inflated cos of greedy agents and 3rd parties trying to milk them silly yanks dry.

Agents have nothing to do with it. Zilch.

His price is inflated because Brighton don't need to sell, and there are clubs willing to pay the amount price, and more. That's all there is to it.

Sport, in particular football is very much an exception.

Do you not think we'd sign a player as good as Caicedo for 20m if we could?
