Mohamed Salah Link 2017

Since January we have been moaning game after game about a lack of players with both rocket pace and output. We have identified one and are about to sign on the dotted line very early in the window (maximising his time with Klopp) - yet there are pockets of people (the same who have cited this lack of pace almost to death) who want to try and compare him to Jermaine Pennant.

That's mainly because he looks a tiny bit like him. I've hardly seen Salah play often enough to have any real opinion, although is pace is always welcome, as are the encouraging stats from his time at Roma.

But stats mean fuck all unless delivered in a Liverpool shirt, so I will reserve judgement until around December. Certainly I'm less confident about him than I was about Mane, but again, I'd seen Mane play more often and, more importantly, in this country.

True, but if we are taking a statistical approach to buying and assessing players I'm sure we would all rather have one with higher stats for both goals and assists than someone without these.

Anyway - its a done deal so all we can do now is offer our full support.

Seeing just how successful Mane has been here has convinced me that adding Salah is fantastic news for us, and particularly if, as we saw towards the end of last season, that Coutinho's future may regularly lie playing slightly deeper. The fact that he favours the other foot than Mane just contributes to the balance he will bring. The exciting thing for Mane is that Salah will create even more space for him, as defenders have only had to be aware of one pacey forward. I look forward to the pair of them tying opponents in knots. Salah also has a more creative side than Mane, and had twice as many assists last season. I just don't see the downside to this one.

Yep. I'm all aboard the 'He's going to be ace' train! Next stop. A fucking boss CB.

Yeah but to place emphasis on the statistics and leave aside the context is problematic.

We need to remember that Edin Dzeko is the top scorer in Serie A.
I don't know whether Dzeko has had a late renaissance or whether its simply playing alongside quality players at Roma makes life easy for him. Or maybe Serie A is shit and we shouldn't take too much from the statistics ?

I think we need to be wary of being blinded by the stats because i think if we were signing a striker that scored 29 goals in Serie A we'd be excited, until we heard it was a 31 year old Dzeko.

That said the only reason i have doubts about this signing is his likeness to Pennant.

You're right that stats mean fuck all if the player doesn't suit play style. Dzeko thrives being the focal point for roma, more than he ever did for City.

Salah bombs up and down the wing with quick passing and loves it more than he did under mourinho at Chelsea.

I don't think salah will revolutionise our attack, but I think he will be another fantastic option for us

Why on earth would you put Coutinho there when Salah can play equally well on the left or right ??
I was of the opinion he played better on the right wing. Most of the goals I've seen from him have come from him cutting inside on his left foot.

To be fair, I've always rated Dzeko as a quality striker. Barring his first and last year, he has a pretty decent goalscoring record at City. Especially for a player who wasn't a certain starter.

Besides, if you don't think he's a good player, then you either believe the Italian league is dog turd, or it's because the players around him (i.e. Salah) have literally laid goals on a plate for him. Or a combination of both. Salah's goal AND assist records seems to suggests he's had a helping hand in the renaissance of Roma/Dzeko.

To be fair though, Dzeko was a good player in the premier league too, arguably misused at City. If he had been playing at a club like Arsenal in place of Giroud, I'd argue he would have got some pretty good numbers, not 29 goals good though.

There's loads of variables about the quality of the opposition, team-mates and position he will actually play for Liverpool, but he won't score as many goals in the Premiership. It's questionable if he will get as many assists either, because at Roma he had a reliable finisher to aim for

We don't just want him as a goalscorer though. He has at least as important a job to do laying chances on for others and he'll be better off doing that from the left wing. If we were going to keep him on one wing or the other I'd leave him on the left, but my preference would be for him to switch around with the other front players, as we did so well at times last season.

Im gonna trust Klopp on this one....

His record with attacking talent is pretty reliable....

Lets just hope he can get a decent CM and CB now.

Dzeko had 3 quality seasons in the PL for City. In his last season he only started 10-11 games in the league, and its no wonder his stats were pretty poor. He also scored 85 goals in 140 games in the Bundesliga.
Not sure using him is the best comparison...

Salah has the attributes to succeed in the PL and has been very impressive for 2,5 season in Italy. He's clearly not the same player he was when Chelsea signed him. You'd think his first stay in the PL would only give him a easier chance of adapting this time.

Adaptation works the other way. The defenders already know who he is, know he was shit last time, and will just rewatch the old tapes of him being easily dealt with by whatever journeyman team he was picked to play against by Mourinho. Has he genuinely improved to a point that he can't be so easily dealt with, or more likely, the Italian defenders aren't as quick as the ones here?

Watch those vids and then imagine us having the best pair of wide forwards since Barnes and Beardsley were destroying defences.

Defenders hate pace, always will. You do need your players to play regularly and in a formation that suits them. Salah's going to rip shit up with Mane. I almost pity the defences that end up gasping on their backs as these boys torture the hell out of them.

Mane has pace in addition to intelligence, composure, close control, acceleration, trickery in the box, and so forth. Salah didn't have most of those other things last time around. There's a chance he'll be ineffective, and a chance that Mane has lost plenty of pace and acceleration and mental toughness thanks to his injury. You're expecting Barnes and Beardsley, when I think you should be fearing Pennant and Downing.

Will be good to have another player who isn't afraid to put his foot through the ball and shoot when the ball is in the area - we had some frustrating games of not doing that often enough last season

a Welcome to Liverpool video is a sign that we are in the nervous 90s on probability. 97%
