[article]Simon Mignolet has agreed a new contract with Liverpool.

The keeper will sign an extension to his current deal to keep him at Anfield until 2020, and earn in excess of £50,000 per week.[/article]

I'm really really confused by this ...

His current deal was to end in Jun 2018, giving us about 29 months before it expired - I don't know why we're so eager to extend the deal rather than wait and see how he does over the rest of this season first.

Meanwhile, Can's deal runs till Jun 2018 as well. We'll probably be on eggshells in December 2017 still fussing over whether he'll stay or leave with a meagre fee determined by a tribunal.

While I reckon some of the criticism Mignolet gets on here gives him less credit than he deserves for the things he does do well, I'd have to agree that at first blush this does seem a puzzling decision. I can't help wondering whether this is similar to what we did with Suarez, giving him a new deal when we knew he was offski the following summer, in order to keep the price as high as poss.

Yeah, it's very similar apart from the fact that every single fan wanted Suarez to stay because he was our best player by a mile, one of the best players to ever wear the shirt; he was obviously going to leave for a huge sum of money to join of the world's footballing superpowers and win lots of trophies and he was irreplaceable.

Meanwhile Simon Mignolet has been dropped on occasion for players as cataclysmically shit as Brad Jones.

I think that's unfair, as Jules was comparing the contracts being signed when most of the public & press were convinced the player was off sooner rather than later.

Obviously both for very different reasons, but both seemed equally as likely, Suarez after he signed & Mignolet now.

Nah. Klopp rates Mignolet and wants to keep him. Wrongly.
Mignolet knows this is as good as it is EVER going to get for him, and that any other top club would have booted his flat face out ages ago. He signed this with every single intention of staying.

It's not a ploy to maintain transfer value. No decent club would ever buy him, because he's not every good. He's signed a contract because both he and the current management want him to stay.

Which is genuinely awful news, because he's shit.

I still don't get peoples fascination with replacing Mignolet, there's much bigger issues in our team.

Is it? Thought our targets werent avaliable until the summer?

Well, maybe. I just have a feeling that Klopp's comments about Mignolet are actually genuine and he doesn't think he needs replacing. I hope I'm wrong. I suppose his performances between now and then may sway that decision.

I bet he's on a good 100k now.
Crazy deal, he'd be one of the first for my 'to sell' list for the summer.

I'm not sure about that, to be honest. Having strikers who can score regularly and a top class keeper can help you get points you don't necessarily deserve. If Man Utd didn't have De Gea last season I suspect they wouldn't have finished in the top four.

His new contract is about 50k a week

Thought he signed on for more than that, so he's not got a payrise then, possibly a paycut. He didn't deserve a new contract to be fair. I'm hoping he ends up being an overpaid backup keeper at this rate.

If he's on 50k, we can live with that even if we stick him on the bench

This could be it possibly. He's hardly been locked in as a good number 2 and in a situation where he can't really leave if we get someone better. Could hopefully shift Bogdan off somewhere on a freebie.

If Klopps happy I'm happy.

Certainly strange given the season he's having but maybe in contract will stabilize him and he'll grow in confidence because as of right now he's not good enough. I have high hopes for Ward to be in goal before the end of the season

I guess Klopp's judgement was that Ming is doing his job, but the CBs are not doing theirs, particularly when it comes to dealing with crosses. Let's see how things are next season with a more stable and aerially stronger back 4.
