Mignolet..

Can I just ask all the knobheads that are laughing about the concerns expressed in this thread..

Does a great penalty save, or great shot stopping in general, automatically make flapping around with crosses and long balls a moot point?
I don't remember him being so shite in that respect last season. Does that mean he doesn't have the strongest of mentality?
Can we not be objective in terms of the good and the shite players produce?
Does Coutinho's brilliance mean that we should simply ignore every single ball he gives away or shots that are shite? Or do we talk about it and hope he improves?
Does Suarez's brilliance mean we should ignore all the shite from this summer, plus his obligatory suspensions per season?
Should we fuck.

Ah - well, I meant that's what the club has done.

I get what you're saying in this thread but you probably made it a little too early and following the pen you had to expect the reaction. I'd just take it on the chin. The debate about Ming will take place over the course of the season, don't worry.

was he good with his feet before ? considering the way rodgers plays i would have thought it is something he looks for in a keeper . But if mingolet isn't comfortable doing it then we shouldn't force him to . today it looked at times like he was told he'd be castrated if he played it long . reina was the same at times last season, looking too often to play it out even when the option wasn't there .

The funny thing is my stream showed a graphic just before the penalty kick, which showed that Walters almost took all of his last few penalty kicks to the keeper's right. I was thinking, I hope we'd shown this to Mignolet before the game.

Saw the same thing too

On Mignolet’s penalty save, Begovic said: "That was a fantastic save, Simon is a top-quality keeper and I am sure he will do well for Liverpool."

Rodgers: Simon's homework paid off

17th Aug 2013 - Latest News
Brendan Rodgers lavished praise on debutant Simon Mignolet for his meticulous pre-match preparation after the goalkeeper's penalty save ensured Liverpool beat Stoke 1-0 at Anfield on the opening day of 2013-14.

The Reds had taken a deserved first-half lead through Daniel Sturridge and looked on course to secure three points when Daniel Agger's late handball presented the visitors with a chance to equalise from the spot.
Jonathan Walters assumed penalty-taking duties for Stoke, but was thwarted by a flying stop from Mignolet, who then sprung to his feet to deny Kenwyne Jones' follow up with just two minutes remaining.
Rodgers told his post-match press conference: "He made three terrific saves in the game. He had one in the first half when Jonathan Walters had a great turn and shot and he Simon stretched and got a strong arm to the corner on the left side.
"Obviously when you don't take your chances - and we created numerous chances and didn't do that - and then get a penalty against you at the end, there's sometimes that sinking feeling.
"But he'd done his homework and knows exactly where all the penalty takers are going. It was a good first save and then obviously the reaction to get up and make the second save was impressive.
"I think from that, you also saw the spirit in the team, what we're trying to cultivate here as well and the energy and attitude of the players.
"It was terrific performance all round - but of course, the goalkeeper gets the plaudits when he saves a penalty right at the end."

Harsh to write him off after 45 minutes but some fair points. Definitely a mixed performance. Outstanding save in the first half and brilliant penalty stop. Flapped at too many crosses and thought his choice of who to play the ball out to was suspect at times, often to someone who had no outlet once they'd received the ball. That said, the outfield players could have done more to support the man receiving the ball. I'm sure Mignolet will be fine and the reaction from the team when he saved it was great.

We had a stroke of luck when Hughes decided to leave the job with Walters. I'd have taken it off him some time before the end of last season.

His distribution and passing was terrible in the main. But it was a debut, you'd have to be a madman to kill him for it. Put it this way, he saved a fucking pen, we would have been waiting for Halley's Comet to see Pepe save another one.

I'll worry more when it's not 6ft7 Peter Crouch challenging him and he's still flapping.

Nervy start but recovered well with a great save and also the penalty.

I also though Begovic was outstanding and it's a travesty he's still at Stoke.

Simon Mignolet has saved a penalty in the #BPL for the first time in 11 tries dating back to September 2010.

Any ways here's the song for him sounds like 'The lion sleeps tonight'

In The Kop goal, The Spion Kop goal, a Belgian keeps tonight . . . A Mignolet, a Mignolet, a Mignolet, a Mignolet! A wooooo!

Maybe he should have shared the results of his homework with the defence. Jones was on his own for the rebound. If we had a good idea where the shot would be, then we should have been much quicker to the location of the likely rebound.

He was extremely shakey in the 1st half both on the ball and under crosses but fuck me his save from Walters in open play and the peno double save was immense.

Begovic was best on ground though fuck he was out of this world

I wonder if we shoot so close to the keeper so often because it worked on Pepe in practice the last few years.
