What a fucking player he was for us.
Just watching this LFC tv show and they had a special section on St Mike, fuck me almost every goal he scored (and there was a shit load of them) was in the side netting. Just a total goalscorer.
I know he left and fucked us over and went the mancs etc etc, but while he was here there was no one to compare.
I wish he had stayed, i wish we could have given him titles. Having read autobiographies from Fowler, Carra and Gerrard its clear that in the Moores/Parry era we didnt really do much to make our players feel loved or valued even, and we certainly didnt think long game, some players like Gerrard (and maybe Carragher) we were lucky to keep but with Owen we werent.
Im never going to admonish him of blame for the way he did things but, im getting old now and i cant carry hatred and bitterness round with me. Im glad we had him, and certainly we had the best of him.
He was fucking ace.

He was, but much like Torres he coasted for about 18 months before moving. Both are somewhat tainted for me given that lack of effort over a prolonged period and the circumstances they both left under.

It's a disgrace the way he's viewed by our fans.

Great great player, who left for better things. Plenty of others have done the saem. Plus, I think the club was at equal, if not greater fault for him leaving.

Funny this thread has appeared.

An hour ago on Setanta they showed WBA vs Liverpool from 2003. We beat them 6-0. We had some proper cunts playing for us that day (Diouf, Traore, Heskey,Baros, Cheyrou) but Owen scored four goals and destroyed the two CB's. Even the WBA crowd were applauding him. His finshing ability was something to behold. When he was good, he was excellent. He was only 23 at the time. I think no one cold have predcted the downward spiral his career was to take.

He's still grooming himself for the MOTD presenters chair, always has been.

He was me hero growing up. I had two walls of posters dedicated to him. He was my idol; a young lad living my dreams, so I think it's fair to say that his departure hurt me more than most.

Part of football died for me when he went to Madrid; it shattered my naive notion that not all players love the club and some are self-serving professionals. It's probably unfair, but I'll never forgive him for leaving and there's a grim sense of satisfaction about how his career has turned out.

I'd never boo him, though, nor sing songs mocking him. We should be above that and I hate to hear it.

Saint Michael joined the Devil(s).

No turning back. His wings were clipped.

Think that's harsh on those highlighted (Traore, Baros, Cheyrou). They were limited in their own ways, but they were all honest players who did what they could. They weren't disruptive nor distractions during their stay or after they left. In Baros' case, he was a useful player bridging the transition from Houllier to Benitez as well. Heskey proper deserves that though because I think he turned soft and didn't play up to a fraction of his true ability in his last 2 seasons, whereas Diouf is beyond question, that organ.

Owen is a weird one , such an amazing talent but there was something about him that you could never really warm to .I read or heard someone recently say that Owen's biggest issue in that regard was that he became an England hero before he became a Liverpool one so our fans never took to him as they should have. I guess there is probably some truth in that , he never felt like "our's" .
Then at a time when we were down , off the back of a terrible season and just got a new manager in , he decided to jump ship . Ok in fairness you can understand a little bit but again he never handled the move well , like Torres it was all about him and he didn't seem to give a fuck about Liverpool. Then the rest we all know.
So yeah , he deserves appreciation for the player he was on the field and what he helped us achieve but at the same time you can understand why he will never be held in high regards by the majority of fans.

He had some wicked dry spells too though (especially after an injury).

And in any case Fowler was a much better finisher.

Shame Owen didn't want to spend his career here.

How things for Rafa could have been so different.

Rafa was the one who got rid of him, convinced as he was that the lumbering oaf he bought six months later was a better fit.

As for - I agree entirely about one of the main reasons the fans didn't take to him being his England performances. There was always the suspicion he cared more for the England shirt than ours but looking at what he did for us - no chance.

Fowler had more in his locker than Owen in terms of skill on the ball but I don't think he was ever quite as clinical as Owen - at least not in a poachers sense. He remains one of my all time favourite players but I watched Fowler waste a huge number of chances. Remember his miss for England too - gave an interview saying he didn't want to sound cocky but if he got chances he'd score...... then went out the next day and missed a sitter.

Owen was just a freak - that pace, balance and clinical approach; I'm pretty sure everyone is still looking for that player to come through our ranks again. I'm not sure he ever will.

Pity he has the personality of a cabbage.

It's a disgrace as he signed for Manchester United.

Other than that I'm not really arsed.
[/quote]

This. His career went a bit tits up anyway when he left and signing for the Mancs was the latest slap in the face he gave us. Strange one Owen, he was ace for us but never managed to grow an affinity with the fans due his constant bleating about England and playing abroad at some stage in his career. I actually felt a bit sorry for him at Real Madrid. His goals per game minutes record was the best of all the strikers at the club but constantly found himself overlooked and unloved by the fans.

It did go downhill for him after leaving us - he was sort of the reverse of Keegan. European player of the year who left us and slowly dwindled from sight vs a great player for us who left and became European player of the year...... twice.

All that aside, however, Owen was incredible for us and his form in our treble season was just remarkable. He was also largely responsible for us competing for the title under GH and, with him on song, we looked hard to beat during the first 3 months of the next season.

Suarez is a better footballer IMO but I reckon Owen would have just pissed goals if he'd been playing with Andy.

I agree, to a degree. Though I think he's maybe bitter anyway about his treatment while he was here, he was never treated with the same adulation as Fowler and co. That said, some of the interviews he's given since joining the Mancs have been twattish.

Pointless calling Heskey a cnt in that list, Heskey may have been limited but was always a fan and never a cnt.

My favourite Liverpool player ever is Michael and im not even bothered he joined united! We had the best years out of him and he moved to try and progress his career as lets be fair we were'nt in the greatest position when he went!
But i just find it really sad that things didnt work out and that he has lost his pace and is prone to injuries! He was a great player to watch and I hope he can have a good end to his career!

"Club equally at fault for him leaving"? Was it bollocks. Just as with McMoneyman, the club's incompetence IN NO WAY excuses the player's behaviour in abusing the trust placed in him and leaving in a way which sold the club short, however naive that trust may have been.

My guess about those arsey and unnecessary interviews Owen gave is that they're due to us not saying "yes please" when he was trying to engineer a move back.

I don't understand how he can be your favourite Liverpool player ever when Steven Gerrard exists.

Ok Rubans & Studsup, fair points made by both of you. Heskey, Baros, Cheyrou and Traore are/were not cunts, just shit at football and not good enough to wear the shirt.

Come on JJ, give in - you know it to be true. 😉

Owen's comments while in Madrid showed he definitely thought he'd been shown the door. Rafa's comments in the media leading up to the season and his obsession with Morientes all supported that view.

I don't think it was anything like Macca who clearly wanted out to Madrid and clearly benefited from moving there as well since his career became far more successful. It's ironic that a player like him - while by no means average - should have good success at Madrid while a player far better than him in Owen should enjoy more limited opportunities at the same club despite the club struggling on the pitch at that time.

Anyway, Owen remains one of our all time goal scoring greats but has tarnished his name - if not his statistics - irreparably with his choices since then.

Still not sure about it, mate. I lost count of the number of times Owen was quoted in the media before he went as saying he "might sign" a new contract. If Rafa's machinations predated them, then yes, you do have a point. It's just that I find that hard to believe in the context of the money which such an approach was always likely to cost us if Owen hung on till the last minute.
