Another slow midfielder. No thanks.

One of the biggest misnomers in football is that lightning pace is critical.

It's absolute fucking bollocks.
Ha I only stuck that in for you Ryan. I know all about your idea of pace in the player is not needed as long as the ball is moved quickly and the player has intelligence.

But the rest still is correct. Maxi is horribly overrated by so many on here for two hat tricks in the last month of last season.
He's not horribly overrated.

Dreamy - 11 players don't win titles, you need a squad. And having someone on the bench or in the squad who's proven he can come in and play a role and score a goal isn't a bad thing in the slightest.

Just cos he's not in the side now doesn't mean we won't need him at some stage, cos we will.

What's the point in getting rid of him? For what purpose? There's more value to us right now in keeping him than moving him on.
He had 3 goals to his name until 4 weeks of the season were left. Hardly proving he can come on a goal.

1 10 day purple patch in 2 years is rubbish and with the wages he's on and the options we have and the youth players he should be moved on.

Yeah but didn't he have about 6/7 in 3/4 games for us last season? I honestly believe that period skewed his performances in the eyes of many of our fans.

Maybe now people will finally cut Rafa a bit of slack for his transfer errors when they see just how rare it is to spend all of, say, £110m well.
I don't think anyone has disputed that its not easy to always spend money well, but what might have pissed people off is spending money badly every year and then moaning about not having any
Pathetic bollocks, unsurprisingly given your extreme views on the subject.
I don't believe I have extreme views on this at all. If anything you have extreme views the other way!

But anyway, probably not the time or the place.
my views are extreme for this site. for our fanbase as a whole, though, they're moderate, and i believe yours are extreme. but, whatever.

i see mark's still peddling the £80m spunked away line. i make it £48m (19 keane, 17 aquilani, 7 dossena, and approx 5 overpaid on johnson, who in no way deserves to be bracketed as a flop like those others, just expensive), and that's without resorting to the legitimate fees recouped line that mark so irrationally refuses to take into account.
I have no idea what every fan thinks of Benitez. I'm sure there are people who are more critical of him than I am though. I think he is a decent manager as it happens but wildly overrated.

Not sure how Mark reached the 80 million figure either. I would personally include Riera and Cavalieri too, but its not that important really.

2 European Cup Finals
League Cup Final
FA Cup Final
and Numerous semi finals in a short 5 year stint impresses the fuck out of me, and yes I hated to see him go to be replaced by Roy HodgePodge, but in all honesty, I'd rather have Kenny here now and not Rafa
i meant to reply to the bit you bolded but forgot: the idea that he's overrated is absolute fucking lunacy. this is a guy who's won major titles at 2 clubs against almost impossible odds, yet had many of our own fans claiming he'd ruined the club, some saying he was a worse influence than G&H, many media figures blaming him for St Hodgson's failings, and aston fucking villa fans up in arms at the idea of him taking over.

overrated!?!?!?!

jesus. fucking. christ.

He is by you Peter. Massively so.

Managers should be rated in a similar way to investors, like Buffett says "Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked."

Benitez, like Redknapp, O'Neill and to be fair the vast majority of managers - is one of those that was swimming naked.

whether he's overrated by me or not is surely irrelevant except in the unlikely case that Richey was referring only to me, and not to fans/media in general. i couldn't really give a fuck what anyone thinks of my opinion of him: do you think i'd still be posting about him on here, of all sites, if i did?!

Oh really? So you know how much he's getting paid do you? Do tell.

And what youth players?

Whats his face?

The SWP wannabe..

Raheem Sterling. What happened to him? It has all gone very quiet on that front.

Maxi wanted 85k before he took a pay cut so more thank likely 60-75k

As for youth

Nathan Eccleston
Raheem Sterling
Suso
Ngoo

Not mention we already have Downing, Bellamy Kuyt and Henderson playing out wide.

Not to mention Johnson can play there too

Is Ryan sticking up for Maxi just because DB is posing an opposing view??

Ryan, I thought you didn't like or even rate 'Mehxi' as you called him. I was sure you called him a non entity or something like that. Suprised to see you take this stance now towards him and fight his cause.

I like Maxi, he needs players around him and did well in the Carling Cup. He was rumoured to be on high wages but I was happy to keep him and want to see him get more minutes.

I think it's a fair point that we're better off with him than without him. If he has a spell in the second half of the season or whenever where he contributes, if only over a few games, it can prove invaluable to the season. He might have only scored so many goals at the end of the season, but those goals got us out the shit and coincided with us playing some of our best football in recent memory.

He'll be looking for a move in january if he continues to be on the bench.
Understandable, that's why he left A.Madrid.

Here's my second post in this thread on him Dave. It's still the best post in this thread:

When we play well and pass it around his movement is good and we look alot better, like with Ming and his off the ball movement, he can have a similar impact. When we have our horrible away days though and we can't put two or three passes together he's anonymous, that's hardly his fault but he relies on the team playing the right brand of football. If we can get the ball down again and play it short then we and he will be a threat, atm the midfield is too flat and we're struggling, there's no one playing between the lines to show for the ball so it's all just a bit too predictable at times.
