Mauricio Pochettino resigns and joins Tottenham

Spurs, like United, have a lot of work to do to make that squad compete at a high level. Probably need a striker, and some help at the back. If Pochettino just wants to import the Southampton side and pay inflated fees, I'm very happy with that.

Don't think this changes a lot for Spurs though. Any benefit of an improvement from Sherwood is mostly negated by yet another change in manager, as well as a drastically different club culture and system that needs to be implemented. Spurs need to be careful not to get caught in the eternal cycle of having unsuccessful transition seasons.

still amazes me that clubs will hand out 5 yr contracts to a manager . Ok it might be like moyes's contract with payoff limits due to missed targets but i still prefer the way we did it with rodgers . 3 yrs with an option to extend but have now given him a new one earned on the back of success.

He got them to 8th in the league, their highest ever top flight position. He also got them doing that by playing a style of football not before seen for them.

Regardless of your thoughts on the second point, the first one is in fact "something special".
They were basically level on points with Newcastle all the way up until March when the Newcastle players decided to go on holidays.
He also spent nearly 30 million on Wanyama and Osvaldo and had players quoted at crazy figures already in his squad.
It's hardly special when you consider what the likes of Martinez,Rodgers and Pulis done with similar and lesser budgets.
Fair point on the football they play though it's brilliant at times especially in St Marys.

1. Not saying he's defo going to be a success at Tottenham
2. Just think the spending part doesn't portray the entire picture
3. Credit where its due

[article]Not sure how big a part Nicola Cortese played in making those signings but the big money signings like Gaston Ramírez and Pablo Osvaldo only made 5 starts between the 2 of them this season whereas both Wanyama and Lovren missed chunks of the season, especially the former. So their success isn't directly linked to the amount of money spent.

Of their regular XI:
Boruc - Free transfer
Clyne - £2.5m compensation
Fonte - £1.2m, rose with the club from League 1
Lovren - £8.5m
Shaw - Academy
Schneiderlin - £1.2m, rose with the club from League 1
Davis - Free transfer
Ward-Prowse - Academy
Lallana - youth signing from Bournemouth, rose with the club from League 1
Rodriguez - £7m
Lambert - £1m, rose with the club from League 1

Of the 22 squad players used (one of the lowest in the league), 5 are below 20 yrs old. There's obviously the type of football they play and this being the manager's 1st full season in a new league too. No guarantees if the bubble will burst but the signs are definitely encouraging.

On a sidenote, their wage bill is £47.1m in 2013, compared to (9) Newcastle's £61.7m, (10) Stoke's £52.5m and (11) West Ham's £56.2m

5 games left to get 7 points and surpass their highest Premier League total of 54 points.[/article]

[article=http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/11164546.Poch_wants_to_beef_up_small_squad/?action=complain&cid=12692036]Pochettino has fielded a total of 24 players in league action during the current campaign. Only Manchester City, with 23, have used less.

Of the 24 players who have turned out for Saints, two are no longer at the club, with Danny Fox and Dani Osvaldo both having been loaned out in January.

In terms of outfield players, no club is lower than Saints’ total of 21.

Three players – Jay Rodriguez, Kelvin Davis and Maya Yoshida – are currently out with long-term injuries.

Saints have also been without Dejan Lovren, Victor Wanyama, Gastón Ramírez and Artur Boruc for fairly significant chunks at various stages of the season.[/article]
