I know our record with free signings is pretty shocking but this definately looks like the sort of low risk capture we should be taking to rebuild the squad, at 25 with low wages and no transfer fee he will cost the club about 3 million a season, if he is shit and we flog him off after a year we are likely to get at least that much back for him and his wages are not so high as to prohibit other clubs from being interested, so in financial terms this sort of deal makes sense, Im guessing we will pick up a couple of signings like this a year to augment the squad while focusing the majority of the budget on the higher profile targets.

Lazy journalism... Marveaux won't officially sign until the start of next month (when the international transfer window opens). I doubt we'll wait that long to sign Downing if we do indeed go in for him.

This is an interesting signing. I think the thing we have to worry about most is injuries. It sounds like if he stays fit we could flog him for a decent amount in two years.
