Roberto Martinez has resigned as manager of Wigan.

The Spaniard led the club to an historic FA Cup triumph this season but could not prevent relegation from the Premier League.

The decision has been announced after 39-year-old Martinez held talks with Wigan chairman Dave Whelan in the past week.
Martinez, who joined Wigan in June 2009, is one of the leading contenders to take over at Everton.

"He wanted permission to move so I've given that," said Whelan.

"He has 12 months left on his contract, so whoever comes in for him must pay the remainder of his contract.

"He feels he's not the man to lead us back into the Premier League. I've got to accept what he feels.

"He loves Wigan and the fans. We have to move on now and want applications for the job."

To the Bluenoses? It shoud be interesting on Merseyside next season, unless you're interested in winning something.

So the mancs now have a manager who has never won anything and looks like the BS have a guy who just got relegated. This could not have gone better. (we won't dwell on the fact our manager hasn't won anything either, that would be too much to digest)

From his Wiki entry:

Throughout his time at Swansea, Martínez was often linked with other managerial jobs, but he repeatedly stated that he would only leave Swansea as manager if he was "forced out." As his success grew, he publicly criticised players that left the club for money or for larger clubs.

In June 2009, both Celtic and Wigan Athletic asked Swansea for permission to speak with Martínez regarding their managerial vacancies, with Wigan being granted the opportunity to hold talks with Martínez. After several days of negotiations, Martínez was confirmed as the new manager of Wigan, taking four backroom staff with him. Martínez signed a three-year contract worth £1.5 million and was assured by Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan that his job would be safe for the next three years, even if the club suffered relegation.

Martínez's move to Wigan was not without controversy. Many Swansea fans were upset that he had chosen to leave the club despite his previous comments that he would have to be "forced out" to leave the club, and he was subsequently nicknamed "El Judas" by some fans.

Martínez explained that his decision had been a difficult one to make, but felt the opportunity to manage in the Premier League at the club where he began his English footballing career was too good to turn down.

I'm keeping my celebrations on hold for now. Neither was in a position to seriously compete for big prizes at his previous club, and both have got the best out of some pretty thin resources.

I like Martinez and I would be doubly sorry if he accepted the Everton job.

Firstly, I like Martinez and I wouldn't want to see the Blue Shite managed by someone I liked, which would be a first.
Secondly, I think Martinez has shown sufficient ability during his time at Wigan to move up to a bigger club and not move sideways to another small club with no money.

Everton are a massive step up from a Championship club.

The derby could be reinvented as a tippy tappy fiesta, which would be no bad thing. The Bluenoses would then have to go in search of somewhere else to vent their spleen.

Yes, and yes.

What ability? Wigan were always poor for the first half of the season and then did well in their last 10 games to stay up. Except they didn't manage it this season. I don't get the hype over him at all. He's proved fuck all.

He's proven a lot, and is a good manager. Your view is way too simplistic. They had 43 points last season. Did they gain 30 of those points in the last 10 games? Like fuck they did.

And what's wrong with having a strong finish to a season?
Are teams that start out strong considered shit? Or teams that do well mid season?

He's talked to Henry. That's more than most people at LFC have done.

Who taught you to walk, Mr Henry?

A very great man called Stephen Hawking, Roberto. But I have fallen arches.

Is that a David Lynch movie?

I don't think this is going to work out.

Well some people like to trot out trophies as evidence of a managers ability. Martinez just won a trophy. With a shit Wigan team.

The reality is Wigan are supposed to get relegated every once in a while given the correlation between league positions and wage bills. They have the lowest wage bill of any Premier League regular for the past few years. And reduced their wage bill by 22% while Martinez was in charge.

I wouldn't bother too much with stressing either the success or the failure he's had this year.

As mentioned before it is a myth that his team only performs towards the end of the season. The figures have proved that their earned almost the same number of points in the 1st half of the season vs the 2nd half. Its more a case of teams around them being inconsistent/suffering dips in form/wilting under pressure.

They lost the likes of Moses, Diame, Rodallega and Thomas all in 1 season. Besides that, they also had to contend with quite a couple of injuries, esp to the defence.

He's going to leave sooner or later (the next pinnacle will probably winning promotion from Championship - afterwhich its about relegation battles on and on), why not on a high after a cup win while allowing Wigan to receive some compensation? The new manager will get to re-shape things and work on his own project in the Championship with aid form the parachute money too.

The one reason why he would want to go to Everton would probably be the chairman. Having worked under Whelan, who backed him and avoided knee jerk reactions, he would probably feel more at ease with Kenwright than other trigger happy chairman.

Yes they won a trophy and i was glad they beat city. But i can't rate a manager who's team is always fighting relegation every single year and just scraping through. And its not simplistic im just going by facts. We'll see how he does at everton who have had a manager with a similar budget to wigan but has managed to keep them in the top 10 or higher most seasons.

That certainly is simplistic. If a club with the resources of LFC or Tottenham were doing it, you'd have a point. There is a difference.

Everton's wage bill is 63m.

Wigan's is less than 40m.

The budgets are nothing alike. And that's why Wigan are where they are,not because of Martinez

Excellent. So now everton can spend all season in the relegation zone and then play well for the last games and get out of it by the skin of their teeth every year. Sweeeeet.

It's a massive gamble to get Martinez, just as it was to get Rodgers. You know the football ought to end up being quite attractive, but beyond that, no matter what is said in the meantime for or against, it's a big leap of faith.
