Mane vs Francis (yest vs West Ham)

The above got a straight red.
The below got a yellow.

What is the difference? Both players were looking at the ball and put their boots up high.

Making impact with the players face with a high foot is always going to garner more controversy.
 
There was a similar one in the Villa game yesterday too, though I didn't think it was as bad as Mane's in terms of where he hit the player, it was the same process that led to the foul, eyes completely on the ball and the players coming at each other from an angle, so neither of them had any intent to go for the player, both were just focused on the ball and one got there first.

The bold part is all I'm questioning - neither Mane or Francis wanted to cleat a player in the face. Both looked terrible 'live' but yet, one player got red and the other yellow. Is this just inconsistencies we expect from refs (ok - no issue, they're human) or does the rule need to be clearer to the refs?
 
Well it's like that advantage the ref played, he let play go on for a while, we had a shot which was tame and the keeper saved, and then he pulled it back for the freekick. It was daft and benefited us when we'd carried on and cocked up the advantage. It was more like the Rugby ruling. More inconsistency.
 
There is a very obvious difference between althem, Mane is lunging towards his opponent with both feet off the ground, the other guy has all his weight planted on his standing foot.
 


If eitherr of them was a wrong decision i'd say yesterdays one was the more likely to be incorrect
 
It's the inconsistency that's galling, rather than what happened to mane

Exactly. It's why it's pointless comparing the decisions

In a vacuum by all means compare, but then you're never going to get consistency, even with VAR.

Best to have a moan on the day and then forget it
 
Agreed. I also think that the ref in our game was influenced by the fact that Ederson looked like he was almost dead. It shouldnt obviously, but I bet if Ederson had popped right back up again then Mane would have gotten a yellow.
