Make or break season for Nunez?

So what is it makes you sound like a rival fan inflating the cost to underline your 'point' and have a dig. Let's just add £20m to every players transfer fee.

And no you don't know the reason he hasn't started. It could be tactical, integration, linguistic (can't see why but we know it's a Klopp 'thing') or yes, form. As fans we're not privy to the selection reasoning.

Why do you always ignore his goals per game? Isn't that what he's there for? Isn't that why fans rightly give Jota a free pass when he's playing crap?

We don’t need to be privy to the behind the scenes decision making.

It doesn’t matter what the reason is - though the worst one would be something like a tactical reason as that should be known up front - at the moment he’s an expensive super sub, which I think you’ll agree is not the role he was bought for.

As for his goals to game ratio, meh.

Sorry I have to go out for lunch! @King Binny , sorry mate do you have the goals and assists per minute stats for all our forwards since the beginning of 2022/23? Cheers mate!

He should stay benched for now and wait for the Europa to start, his goals to game ratio will rise to the moon when he bags a hattrick against the champions of Moldova

This is what i could find per 90 only for last season

Tried to include doak over his whole career too

So if that's correct, it turns out the only stat he's the best at is the made-up "xG"?

In all seriousness, I'm firmly in the jury still out camp and want him to do well because he seems likeable and the good kind of nutter. I also wouldn't sell him, as things stand it feels more likely we're going to register the Schmad than make any more signings

Whilst I don't think all is lost yet, it's certainly not looking promising. I still think there's something in him, and genuinely believe if he can get a run of games he could play himself into some form and potentially grow into the player we want him to be.

Problem is, despite his massive raw potential, I struggle to see a future where I'd be happy he's starting an important game over Gakpo or Jota, the guys the epitome of the sublime and the ridiculous, and unfortunately it's more ridiculous than sublime. Under Klopp I've grown a accustomed to consistently good rather than flashes of brilliance, so he really needs to work on his consistency and not looking so cumbersome for me to feel confident with him in our team, will that come with confidence and form? Maybe, but I'm not too convinced.

Still, I want him to have his chance, just not in the Premier League unless it's against dross like Everton and Luton. Give him all the cups and the Europa League, if he can play well in those games and prove he can not look like the sorest of thumbs in our team, then we can talk about the most important games.

No point selling him now, but if we're having the same discussion in June 2024, then I'm afraid our evolution needs to continue without Darwin.

The lad gets about 5 million a year after tax. I would say he's already made it...

The thing is, we'll utilise his core strengths and get the best from him against some teams, or late in games, he's rapid on the counter attack and does have a good understanding with Salah when they break. He'll get goals and he'll contribute, but the argument is he wasn't bought to be a glorified Traore or Cisse, he was bought to be a standout striker and an ever present.

Klopp does like to take his time with players, particularly ones that need some indulgence, but a year on he's probably 5th choice of 5 attackers. When we consider that one of those other attackers scores goals but is otherwise peripheral, and another doesn't score many goals and is otherwise inconsistent, that's a pretty stark state of affairs for Nunez.

I don't think he was purchased to be a starter in every game. I don't think he would have played as many games last year if others hadn't been injured.

I don't know if Nunez will succeed, but he will only do so as a longer term project. I reckon klopp would want to be using him more now but, new shit came to light.

Not just that he is a wild finisher though. The whole team is very different. Part of why Nunez hasn't played as compared to jota for instance is pressing and positional discipline. Certainly the case gakpo played more than him once in.

It doesn’t matter what his stats say. The only thing that matters is that we, a frugal team that can ill afford expensive mistakes, spunked a large amount of money on a striker that doesn’t appear to fit in.

That’s not to say I dislike him or have anything against him. I think we all appreciate pace and power… when used effectively. I’d love for him to succeed… just don’t see it right now. Hope I’m wrong.

The hilarious thing is that he'd score 20-25 a season for some clubs - Dortmund, Chelsea, whoever. We just brought a player who obviously didn't fit our style of play and Klopp doesn't wanna change it

He is not going to make it. He is not even on the same wavelength as any of our players. Nobody knows what he is going to do next. Everything about him is random.

Yet, if rumours are to be believed, he is the one who pushed for him, against the recommendations of other staffers.

Yeah surely instead of doing that we should just sign players who do well against a low block or show those stats

Can this thread stay unlocked until the season ends? Gonna be worth revisiting it back and laughing at every single daft comment made.

This never ends well.
Same things were said about, Carroll, Downing, Adam, Lallana, Keita, Ox etc.

Heh, thing is, there's nothing really wrong with championing him and wanting him to do well, we all do, but it's when people start rolling out laughable predictions about goal returns and stuff, when they've done it before about other players and been left looking stupid. Yet they still do it, that's the daft part.

  • He's not done as well as we hoped and struggled to cement a place
  • He's looked good at times and on a totally different planet at other times.
  • He has time to come good, we all want him to
  • Let's not get drawn into pulling out useless context lacking stats and making bold predictions - no one knows which way it will go, but going out on a limb making arrogant assertions just makes people look stupid

You're a big fan of Nunez. Out of interest, how long do you think we should be giving him?

Why do we need to put a time frame on it? Just because he cost 65m he needs to hit strides right away otherwise should be shown the door? Every side needs a squad of 24-25 players, no reason why he can’t be given equal game time as Jota/Diaz/Gakpo, the signs are there, he’s a constant threat and menace and he’s clearly shown with a bit of polishing on his finishing, can get 25-30 goals. He gets himself into very good positions, if he wasn’t making those driving runs or was very shy in front of goal then you could make a case. Klopp gave an interview on Sky where he spoke just on Nunez and his season review, he spoke very highly of him….I think we should bear that in mind before jumping the gun and having something negative to say about him every other week.

This is what I don't get - it's not pace but instruction that's absent. He's the 5th fastest player in the PL by top speed, very close to Walker who is still the fastest (2022-23 season).

History is no predictor of the future. It's illogical to apply comments re. those players against someone else.

Ah well this can of Gosser is going down really well in this heat (35C but feels hotter than 45C in Shanghai)!

Might not be a good predictor, but it sure is a good indicator.
In the end no one is saying sell him today.
We all want to see what he does this season, but the consensus seems to be that if he doesn't show enough of an improvement be it in amount of goals or some other type of impact, his future at the club should be questioned.
