Does it matter though? They've scouted him and think he fits the bill, I don't get why there should be an order of priority, you either think a player will improve you or you don't, if it's the latter you don't bother, so I'd imagine with all of our targets it's a case of us wanting them, it beats tossing away £20m on "someone else" because Gareth Barry or whoever is unobtainable. It shouldn't really matter what the initial pedigree is, a few people were showing similar reservations about Coutinho. I know not every transfer is the same, but it seems obvious from Ayre's comments that we have alot of faith in this lad. I'd be more worried if there weren't solid links to other players, but there are, it's obvious there's quite a few on the way in. One of them is being linked with a £20m+ move, so us saying one of our cheaper signings is a big coup should be treated with optimism really. It's not like he's saying £6m on a Spanish reserve is the best we can come up with.
Taken literally, it means we're not going to be spending big money on another attacking player, which seems to conflict with the Mkhitaryan rumours. Which is why I said it doesn't make sense.

Or maybe the Mkhitaryan rumours are rubbish, and Alberto and Aspas are the only attacking signings we're going to be making. Which I'm perfectly fine with if Suarez isn't leaving.

excuse the laziness, but can someone summarise our new player for us? what kind of player is he? from what I gather he is an intelligent play-maker type of player who has a great strike but is not the paciest. is he a winger or a central midfielder?

Like Mata you say?....

Barcelona-based football writer for Goal.com, Ben Hayward, gives us the lowdown on what Liverpool fans can expect from new signing Luis Alberto...

What are your thoughts on Liverpool signing Luis Alberto?
Definitely a good signing. At just 20, Luis Alberto is one for the future but also looks ready to step up to top-flight football now. Frustrated by a lack of opportunities at Sevilla, he blossomed at Barcelona B on loan last season and is keen to show what he can do in the first team at a big club. Liverpool should be the ideal stage.
Barca reportedly had an option to buy him - why didn't they take him?
Many Barcelona fans are upset that the club did not activate an option to buy him, but I think they realised he would want first-team football sooner rather than later and with Neymar coming in, Messi omnipresent, Pedro, Alexis Sanchez, Cristian Tello all staying and Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas sometimes occupying forward positions too, there is overbooking in the front three at Camp Nou. Barca may also bring in another striker this summer as David Villa departs, so opportunities would have been scarce for Luis Alberto.
What are his key attributes?
He has excellent technical ability and can beat players with his trickery, even though he is not the quickest. He also boasts superb vision, great tactical awareness and creativity, as well as a very powerful shot with his right foot. He scored 11 goals for Barca B in 2012-13, including several spectacular efforts from outside the area, and racked up an impressive 18 assists. His heading can probably be improved, though.

Where do you see him slotting into our side?
He can slot in across the front line or even as an attacking midfielder. At Barcelona he was happiest in the 'false nine' role, while he started his career as a left forward - even though he is right-footed. He looks comfortable in any of those positions, but may be suited to a slightly deeper role behind a main striker in the Premier League.
Do you think he'll be able to adapt to the Premier League?
He should do very well. He has the stature to cope with a more physical game, although he will need to bulk up somewhat and improve his strength for the Premier League. His vision and technical ability will serve him well and should suit the style of play Brendan Rodgers is so keen on. With the right coaching and adaptation, he can be an excellent signing. His versatility is also a huge plus.
If you had to compare him to another player?
I suppose he is a little like Juan Mata in that he has excellent technical abilities and is very creative, with a good eye for goal as well. He is more direct than the Chelsea player, though. At Barcelona, he linked up brilliantly with another young Spain star, promising winger Gerard Deulofeu.
Should supporters be excited?
Definitely, although he is still young and will need time to adapt.

I'm reasonably hopeful about this one but have been wondering why he's not been involved in the national squads this summer as well. Injured or have we just bagged ourselves an unfashionable player (hopefully before he becomes fashionable)?

The under 21s for Spain take the living piss. Its no shame not getting selected.

Ferguson hates Strachan, for having the temerity to get a move to Man United without his approval.

This is one of the ways I justify not despising Strachan. Even though he scored that fucking equaliser in like 1987 or something.

Yeah, I know he wasn't going to get selected for the U21s but what about the U20s? He still qualifies, right?

"Doesn't apply to the U20 world cup. Born in 1993 or later.
Alberto was born in 1992."

According to @Modo

I was going to say that (thinking Gordan Strachan) - but then checked his signings list & he actually did not do it. Closest was signing McClair from Celtic, which is nearly Aberdeen 🙂

Jim Leighton

He also signed Ralph Milne... For reasons no-one can quite gather.

He also omitted Hansen from the national team to play McLeish & Miller.

I just watched this video, my worry is that almost all these goals and assists resulted from poor defending, poor goalkeeping or a combination of those two. On the plus side, he does look like he has a great delivery.
