Lucas transfer was done and dusted

It's not often that you encounter such a divergence in opinion among supporters about a player. Some think The Lying Rag shines out of Lucas' rectum, others think he is an incompetent donkey. Opinions used to differ in a similar way about Danny Murphy.

In my opinion, when fans argue about whether a player is any good or not, he probably isn't that good.

Generally, fans remember a player's good games and the detractors, the bad games. Good players has more fans and bad players has more detractors.

Lucas has, more or less, an equal share of both, which means he is average like Allen and Lallana.

Yup but it gets quoted as though it means more than that
Sakho made the most number of passes yesterday, and had the highest completion rating; ergo, he's undeniably a better passer of a football than Can, Coutinho, Firmino, Hazard, et al.

I am getting this "pick a stat and flog the shit out of it to support my argument" thing right, right?

Sakho's pinpoint passes out of defence are one of his outstanding talents. They are as good in their own way as Coutinho & Co's passes.

Sakho isnt a good passer of the ball though, as he has a weird akwardly body shape or something when he hits the ball. So ergo he cant pass it properly. No stat can match that.

You're going to end up trapped in an old priest's underwear hamper, you know that right?

He was good yesterday mate, no doubt. I guess what I was trying to point out is that stats in isolation only tell part of the story. Like when a few years ago you'd have found Al Habsi and Gomes at the top of the GK charts for saves made....they were nowhere near being the best goalies in the league, and were regularly hurling the ball into their own net,.... The fact that their sides were playing shite and the ball was raining down on their goals padded their (erroneous) stats.

Lucas came to us as one kind of midfielder and took a LONG time to become the quality DM he was at the time of his knee injury at Stamford Bridge. He had become a bit of a cult figure for some because of this overcoming of adversity, and for a healthy minority of our fans that remains today. He is nowhere near as bad as his biggest detractors make out, and nowhere near as good as Dreamy is spunking on about in this thread. What is for sure is that he is now an incredibly limited footballer who would seriously struggle to get in another Top 6 Premier League side. His slow movement and QE2 like turning circle really hamper him, and the tap tackles from behind are a mark of a footballer who simply hasn't worked hard enough on a really poor part of his game that has been there for many years. However, against the right opposition, with the right players around him, and with a little fortune, his qualities can provide the bedrock for a win like yesterday when his neat and tidy passing work, and moves into space (albeit at iceberg speed) coupled to his defensive shielding (both blocking space and tracking midfield runners) are standout. I have a soft spot for the lad, and hope that Klopp can work his magic on him; but I would definitely say it's a position we must be looking to upgrade, maybe not as the top priority, but somewhere near the top of the list.

I always wonder if Benitez ruined Lucas. We signed him as a box-to-box midfielder, but Benitez assigned him an ultra-defensive role and kept him there. When Lucas goes forward, as we have seen under Klopp, he still looks capable of creative football.

You may well be right Portly. Won the Golden Ball for best player in the Brazilian league the year we signed him I recall. But I reckon those knee injuries and that diet of ultra-DM accountabilities you mention may have robbed him of that option over a sustained period.

Quiffer.

*legs it*

Klopp, the most revered manager to ever put on a tracksuit, is now the 6th straight manager to plant Lucas straight into the side whenever he's fit. Even out on his feet, a fucking walking centimetre away for a red card on Saturday he still wasn't taken off.

What do all these managers see that the educated masses of sixcrazyminutes don't I wonder?

Pride.

Hendo has this running gait and therefore his running stats are all wrong and he's not very good at it. They should be, at the minimum, labelled gaiting stats.

It's the same cycle over and over again for the last 7 years Lucas is shit most of the time and when he has a few half decent games he's the fucking Messiah - he's not

I've never rated him in his time here and I never said he was the messiah, I said he deserves credit for being superb in the last 7 games
