Is anyone else worried that he's just looking distinctly average?

I thought last night would have suited him as he'd have more time on the ball, etc, but again he was largely anonymous.

I know it's his first season in a different continent, etc and many times they come on in their second season, but he doesn't seem to have enough in his locker to go on to that next level at the moment.

I hope I'm wrong.

The lad is still settling but must certainly bulk up a bit. Nothing wrong with his contribution. He'll improve.

He played a very good game yesterday, and looks a real prospect. First season in the EPL, why on earth should we be worried?!

He started nervously and didn't make any attempt to influence the game, he just seemed keen to avoid making a mistake. However, after about 30 minutes he began to look more composed and tried to make a few things happen. I was surprised when he was subbed because he was at his most effective at this point but the substitution worked.

Still too many shit passes though. As I say, I hope it's just my perception and I'm proved wrong. I'm not convinced at this stage though.

He doesn't look athletic or physical enough for the Premiership, but he does have decent ability on the ball.

He is young settling in a new country and learning a new language plus a new style of football i think it would be extremely harsh to judge him at the moment. Give him time!

Hasnt settled in fully yet but he won the Brazilian League player of the year last year and has been involved in a couple of Brazil squads so give him a bit more time.surely hes good

I thought he was more than decent last night, but his performance was overshadowed by Masher and Gerrard's midfield contributions- no dishonour in that. He doesn't hide, and is always putting himself in a good positions to receive the ball and retain possession. For a young lad arriving for his first season in English football he's doing well. I think he'll be fine.

thought he was very cautious and anxious starting off...which is fair enough as by far biggest game he has played with liverpool.... but thought he got better as game went on. has great potential and hope he develops into better p;ayer in 2nd season and not go backwards like many others here!!!

That's a pretty high standard you're setting there mate. I counted one misplaced pass in the 65 minutes he played.

He's definitely not the athlete that Anderson is at manu but the way he moves and the ease with which he brings a ball under control is great. I thought he was controlling the speed from about the 35 minute mark to the 65 minute mark. He might turnout to be the next Smicer but I think there's something about him and he's going to be a champion for us.

I'm not worried. He certainly doesn't look out of place in our team - his performances tend just to be overshadowed by the likes of Stevie and Masher. One thing I did notice was his willingness to make attacking runs into the box. There were one or two occasions when he passed the ball on the edge of the box and then looked for the return but never got it. If we could be a little more imaginative in the final third then I think he could benefit.

Hmmm.. Lucas certainly needs to bulk up a bit. A lot of players from Brazil often come to European clubs quite skinny (Ronaldo - PSV, Adriano - Inter, Ronaldinho - PSG, Kaka - Milan) and then after a year of two of intense training, a specific diet and 'supplements' they often put on more muscle and get stronger/quicker.. obviously, Ron, Adriano and 'Dinho once sucessful, enjoyed a bit too much food.. but i'm hopeful that Lucas can and will become a better athlete, to go along with his obvious football talent.

It's a bit suprising though, because watching some of his youtube clips - the lad had some pace, before he came.. it seems to have diminished a little, perhaps it's just being around quicker players (in our league).

Lucas will probably take time to get used to things and develop plus build himself up physically. he is only 20 ffs and is playing CM for Liverpool in big games like Chelsea and Inter Milan

I think he looked good last night, he seems quite calm, and he played some neat passes. I reckon it's first season jitters but I have seen some really encouraging stuff from the lad so my hopes are high!

But then they were about Baros, Morientes, Gonzalez ............. Nunez......... Oh dear 😛

i like how Rafa is using Lucas. He gave him 6 mths just to settle and now the lad is seeing more and more games. as ibro said, he will most likely bulk up as the training sets in and then, we will see a fine middie

I think your unfair here. Inter closed their half with 8 players guarding in two lines around their 16 yard box, and Zlatan slightly higher up the pitch (still well into their own half). Then you can a) pass the ball around our own midfield for 60 minutes or you can try to lure it in the very narrow holes you can find. Lucas was brave enough to not just roll it sideways whenever he had it. Almost impossible to send a killer pass from the centre, but he still gave a try to make them uncomfortable.

Having said this I was very impressed with the whole team in the second half. I was scared it would be sideways footie for 45 mins, but we combined and challenged Inter well, and could have had 2-3 more goals. Well done lads!

Coming here as skipper of the Brazil U-21s, Lucas was always going to carry sky-high expectations. If I look at what he's actually done as opposed to what we might have been expecting, perhaps not totally reasonably, I'm cautiously optimistic about him. He's still got a lot of developing to do, but IMO for a young player in a new country he's done OK so far.

He's a dud.

Said it about:

- Voronin
- The Gems
- Nunez
- Gonzales .......not to mention a whole host of others.

Leiva wont make the cut.

When he first came, all I heard about him was the term 'box-to-box midfielder'. That says to me that he'd be in the Gerrard mould, full of energy, drive and pace. He seems quite the opposite though.

But it is his first year, so we'll give him a chance. He looks like he can play a bit.

I think he's done pretty well so far.

He obviously needs a lot of time and space on the ball, and when given that, he tends to do pretty well i.e yesterday.

He doesn't seem to have any real 'drive' as yet, but hopefully that will change. He's still young and has plenty of time, and I have high hopes for him.

He looks like a neat and tidy footballer but he looks happy for the game to pass him by a bit. Id like to see him get more involved and be a bit more creative in his play. He doesn't always need to pass sideways.

He should look to Iniesta for inspiration. He was a player who never really caught the eye at Barca but he gets very involved now and is one of the most impressive players in La Liga.

I feel he could become a player if he toughens up and gets a bit more confident.

To be in the Brazil squad aged 20 he can't be complete shit.. Although he hasn't set the world alight (during his first season in a new continent, new language, away from family, playing with a different team, in a different league) I reckon he has potential to be a very good player for us. I'd rather Lucas in the team than Xabi and after a year or two of 'settling in' and getting adapted, i'm sure he'll be just fine.

He's still too lightweight. He looses too many challenges in the middle of the park because he lacks physical presence.
Playing him and Alonso against Barnsley was a massive mistake from Rafa. Championship players are even more physical.
Alonso was the one who gave Milan a stupid freekick in the CL final for the 1st goal and he lost a challenge against Barnsley that gave them the last winner.
Mascher-Gerrard must be our central midfield partnership in every game until the end of the season.

I'm ready to bet he wont make it. Liverpool FC, over the last 6-7 seasons have had a disastrous record with nurturing potential talent.

I'm struggling to name even one young player (non-home grown) who made the cut in the long run.

He was playing as a defensive midfielder, he did get misplace one pass last night however. Just one.

He wont make it obviously :🙂

Taking everything into account, I think he's doing as well as you can genuinely expect at this stage of his Liverpool career
