is there any need for an on going debate? obviously he and Babel need games and won't improve if they dont get them. anyone who wants to see Xabi starting after the Barnsley debacle is off their heads, he should slowly be subbed back
Alonso can still pull off a defense splitting pass (like the one to Benayoun last week), and bring the wide players in much better, no matter how out of form he is.

Give him the freedom of a Masch behind him and lets see what happens to Xabi. He's one of the most naturally talented players around. I'd be devetstated if he leaves.

I want Alonso to start ahead of Lucas who was the very definition of a passenger today.

Alonso has looked well off the pace against Barnsley and West Ham, i'd want him subbed slowly back

So say we all.

I'd like to think,we'll start to see some proper Xabi performances after this whole not making the bench and Rafa publicly saying he's not playing well enough etc, whether that be to prove to the fans that he's still got it or to put himself in the shop window, is pretty irrelevant at the moment, I just want to see him get stuck in.

That's not happening though. He's just been dropped and if we were playing a 4-4-2, I'd have no issues with that because Masher and Gerrard are more deserving starters, but when we use three in midfield, he should start because he is better than Lucas, off form or not.

since Xabi has been back from injury, here's our record when he's started (all comps): LDWLL and when he hasn't: WDDDWWDWW

i dont know what to read into but it shows we've lost games when he's started, 3 to exact and we don't tend to lose many games

One of Lucas' virtues up to today, was that he always passed to a red shirt. Today it all went wrong, he was under-hitting his passes.

I think the lad is entitled to have an off day - I certainly wouldn't write him off after one bad game.

yup ... everyone is quick to jump on him ... give him the rest of the season to grow more comfortable with the pace of the game and hopefully an off-season to get stronger will make him a far better contributor next year ...

Lucas is certainly not a "one-paced, sideways passer" etc as some of the rubbish in this thread would point to, I'd have though it was pretty obvious to see that he's had it drummed into him to stay back with Mascherano so that Gerrard can venture forward at will.

He just looks a little overawed to be playing first team football at Liverpool at the moment, in completely different surroundings and facing a completely different tempo of play. The dwelling on the ball, being outmuscled etc will reduce greatly the more he plays, and I'm holding out to say he'll be a very fine player (yes, a Fabregas style" one).

Did very well last night.

Still no Anderson, though.

Being asked to play a different role. No?

He's got alot of ability and being a centre mid, from Brazil, at 21 in your first season in England, is a hard position to accomplish, I think he's done extremely well. Some of his play today was exceptional for a kid in a new country.

Not when Lucas is played next to Mascherano.

But I thought he played very well last night.

It's just that he needs that extra bit of pace I reckon.

I was taking the piss before, but I do have a lot of patience for Lucas.

He's clearly got a fair bit of technical ability and as he settles he should get better and better. You don't win player of the season in Brazil at such a young age if you've not got talent.

He needs to impose himself on games more but I'm confident he can become an important player for us.

Interesting to look at the team that thrashed us 2 years back to see how they've moved on
Almunia

Hoyte Touré Djourou Traoré
(Connolly, 88)
Walcott Fabregas Song Denilson
(Diaby, 73)
Baptista, Aliadière.

Substitutes not used: Poom (gk), Lansbury, Randall.
One is irreplaceable. 4 are regular first teamers. Toure is the captain of the richest club in the world. I'm not sure what Walcott is.. Does he start for them?

Lol at Babel, Walcott, Nani & Anderson.. They were bought in the same window and they all turned out a bit shit..

The resurrection of this thread seems to be predicated on the assumption that Lucas is a bad player and formerly some posters were optimistic about him.

I agree that Lucas has often not contributed much to games, but he does read the game well and he has improved quite a lot this season in terms of getting stuck in. He is a young player and so he may well continue to improve until he becomes indispensable!
