Loan Players Watch

Neco Williams impressed again on Saturday with a Man of the Match display in his first away outing in the league with Fulham. Our new boy was a constant thorn in the Tigers’ side, leaving no blade of grass uncovered. The Welshman got 71 touches including getting nine balls into the box, one of which served up Mitro for the game winning goal.

[article]The words Preston North End fans didn't want to hear, but perhaps expected, sadly came out of Sepp van den Berg's mouth this week.

March is just around the corner, which means May isn't all too far away and once that month concludes, so will the Liverpool starlet's temporary deal with the club.

The loan darling of the Lilywhites faithful, van den Berg has been an ever-present in the team this season, taking his game to the next level and coping with the Championship like a seasoned-pro - certainly not the relatively untested 20-year-old he is on paper.

But with the Dutchman's high ceiling comes an acceptance that the youngster - and a club of Liverpool's size - won't be content with overstaying his welcome at a level he aspires to outgrow.

And judging by van den Berg's latest comments, one-and-a-half years at Deepdale looks like being North End's lot. If the summer does prove to be the end of the road, and the two go their separate ways, the defender will always have a place in the hearts of PNE supporters.

"Of course, I have felt all of the love I've gotten ever since I came here and I really appreciate it," he said. "It means a lot to me and helps me. You never know, but I reckon after this season that it unfortunately has to come to an end.

"But, I have really enjoyed my time here and there are still a few months to go, so I will just keep enjoying it while I am here. If we get to the Premier League (for) next year I might as well stay here! You never know; I just live in the moment and enjoy every game, the home games, the away games, seeing all of the fans, being around the training ground with the players.

"You never know, but we will see. Liverpool is a big club, I have been talking mostly with the loan manager - whatever you want to call it - and it's been all positive as well, which is good for me. I am really happy and grateful that I got the opportunity here."

The feeling will certainly be reciprocated, with van den Berg seeing this as a time in his career he will always reflect on with great pleasure and pride.

"I already did to be fair," van den Berg said to LancsLive. "I went back home in the summer and I knew they wanted to get me back, just not whether it would happen. I had a great time and this year it has been even better for me personally.

"So yeah, I will definitely look back and say that this has been a great time for me. When I trained with the first team at Liverpool, it was just different class, unbelievable - I played a bit and just felt personally that I needed to play games.

"I'm happy I have done and to already make 50 appearances for Preston, I think that is a great job and playing games for me, is how you develop most as a young player."

Sounds like he played well, but…

The heat map and the overused “leaving no blade of grass uncovered” comment next to each other is striking.

It actually appears that he did not cover 80% of the blades of grass, even if he was MOTM.

[article]It wasn’t just a celebration. It was also an outpouring of emotion after three months of torment, turmoil and strife.

But as Ben Davies wheeled away towards The Kop, screaming into the night air and manically beating his own chest after firing Sheffield United to a momentous victory over Blackburn Rovers, manager Paul Heckingbottom paused to reflect on the defender’s professionalism following a series of personal and health issues.

Signed on loan from Liverpool during the August transfer window, Davies was making only his sixth appearance for United since the end of November after being summoned from the bench towards the end of Wednesday’s contest. The 26-year-old’s added time strike, which saw Heckingbottom’s side regain sixth place in the Championship table, thrust him back into the spotlight after weeks in the shadows as, having first been excused from duty because of a “private” matter, coaching staff then told journalists he had been diagnosed with Covid-19.

“All the time he has been out, not being involved on the pitch, Ben has been supporting the rest of the players every way that he can,” Heckingbottom told The Star, before revealing the moment Davies truly earnt the respect of his colleagues and coaching staff. “I told me not so long back: ‘I will give Robbo (Jack Robinson) all the help he needs, all the backing he needs’ to make sure he was properly ready and prepared to perform well. ‘I’ll do that for Robbo.’ That’s what Ben said.”

Robinson stepped into the breach when Davies was initially ruled-out of action, with the two in direct competition for a place on the left flank of United’s defence. But with another loanee, Brentford’s Charlie Goode, being dismissed midway through the second period of what proved to be a breathless encounter against Rovers, their pair are now expected to both start at Millwall on Saturday. Chris Basham, who had been operating on the right of United’s back three, is the latest member of Bramall Lane’s senior squad to face a prolonged absence after damaging a medial collateral ligament during last weekend’s thrashing of Swansea City.

“Ben has managed himself brilliantly, all the way through,” Heckingbottom continued. “He’s done exactly what you would expect and more.”

[article]Harry Wilson says Liverpool fullback Neco Williams is impressing on-loan with Fulham.

Wilson left Liverpool permanently last year for the Cottagers.

He says Williams, who already has two assists to his name, has settled in well.

"I think he's getting the games I think he needs," Wilson told The Athletic.

"Obviously he was at Liverpool learning from the best in Trent (Alexander-Arnold), but I think at his age and where he is in his career, coming out and playing games on loan was what he needed.

"He has settled in well, he's got himself a couple of assists already and I know when I've got the ball, he's always around me or he is inside me, and I thought we linked up well (against Cardiff)."[/article]

I have a feeling Neco is going to be a monster player when he returns to us next season.

I think it’s great that he’s doing well - he either steps up to be Trent’s understudy (if he’s happy with that) or he’s becoming a decent sellable asset.

Part of me thinks Jones would benefit from a season out on loan at a decent side like Southampton or Palace to get more playing time - but we’d need to be signing another midfielder.

Morton could do with a loan to a top Championship side - maybe someone like Norwich next season.

I don't think Jones would get into those two sides.

Morton, I agree.

If Jones couldn’t get in to those two sides the we should sell to a championship side, because that’s his level.

I don’t agree.

If Minamino can do ok at Southampton and Gallagher do well at Palace - there’s every reason to believe Jones can do well at a similar level is he applies himself.

I think we'd be best sending him out on loan again depending on his contract situation and his desire to stay at Liverpool.

He's looked pretty green when playing for us and if we've discovered that he's the type of player that can really develop and excel on loan, why bring him back to sit on the bench?

Because he’s not going to just sit on the bench. I think he will come back as a versatile winger who can play on both flanks at full-back, wing-forward or even CM (like Ox, who will probably leave by then). That’s a valuable type of player to have and we’ll finally have a back-up for Trent.

I've not watched him for Fulham so can't comment on what kind of progress he's made but can't see Klopp giving him loads of minutes based on what I've seen from him in a Liverpool shirt.

If he's progressed enough within this short time to be considered a genuine first-teamer and we see the likes of Ox and Milner (who often deputises at fullback) leave then perhaps. I remain less convinced then you though.

The Fulham fans are suitably impressed but it sounds like - as we knew already - that his strengths are going forward.

[article]Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe has revealed the club are in contact with Liverpool over extending Sepp van den Berg's stay at Deepdale.

The Dutch defender has spent over 12 months on loan at the Championship outfit.

Van den Berg, 20, has played 57 times for Preston during that time, and Lowe is keen to keep him beyond this season.

"With Sepp, Liverpool were in here the other day for a full day, watching what we do and how we go about it," Lowe told LancsLive.

"We're in contact with them but again, it's down to Sepp and what he wants to do."

Signed as a teenager from PEC Zwolle in 2019, van den Berg has played just four times for the Reds.[/article]
