Liverpool Will Be Competitive

It's not always fair to compare points and positions from different seasons as a sign of progression (or regression) given all the myriad factors involved (ie other teams), but it's useful benchmark.

We need to show a positional and points improvement and continue progress in the cups. But then what? I just don't see any possibility of a genuine and consistent challeneg for the title. Anyone can have a run at it in one great season. We've done it under Rodgers. Leicester went one better. But if we want to be in that mix year after year, we need new owners.

Doesn't matter who is managing.
Sadly I agree, that is the reality of modern football. Can we do a Dortmund and win the title, maybe even CL again ? Absolutely we can, but to put ourselves in a position of being title challengers year after year we need to have owners of the ilk of City or Chelsea.

How terrible can the midfield be if we dominated against Spurs and Arse away, and despite the result, had almost 90% possesion against Burnley? Surely there are signs for optimism?

What does this tell you?

Against spurs and arsenal possession was 50/50, arsenal were playing their B team and not sure what happened to spurs.

Everyone knows our midfield is terrible, it's no coincidence since we sold Xabi and Masch and never properly replaced them we've drifted away into the magic night.

That our finishing let us down in one early season game against a side who will trouble plenty of other teams this season. End of.

Still can't get my head round this supposed dicking of Spurs

We didn't dick them. At all

That's a dicking apparently

I think the season so far is hard to determine, quelle surprise three games in.

Our defense is a complete unknown at the moment. You'd be hard pushed not to have been impressed with Klavan's performance against Arsenal, or Matip's against Spurs, so there is room for optimism or at the very least a huge degree of faith has to be given on that note. Milner wouldn't have been my favourite option at left back, but he's a good player to have anywhere in the team and will do a job while still chipping in. While we know next to fuck all about the new keeper, so we can only hope that with 4 new additions to 5 positions at the back, something has to improve, but it will take a bit of time for a balance and understanding to be found. It's not really a surprise we're still conceding, we've had injuries that have disrupted at least two of the four new players at the back in each of the games so far. So the whole "oh woe is our defense, nothing has improved" stuff is complete reactionary, premature bullshit. We haven't had everyone fit and we've had to chop and change as a result, you can't find consistency without some continuity.

At the other end, there are goals in us, we just have to get the right balance in midfield and we desperately need Can back who is at least part of the industry we've been lacking (which again seems to be getting overlooked).

Our biggest problem is that we're still kind of hoping that a few of our potential match winners push on this season and become more lethal and consistent. That's the biggest question mark. People will have to be more patient with the defense because individuals can win you matches but it takes a while to bond a unit that's capable of keeping teams out consistently. It'll come.

I thought we did dick them at times, for large periods of the game actually, we certainly had them on the ropes and had the better chances. People are being complete dicks about JJ's point.

I wouldn't say it was large periods. I'd say it was equal. First half us, second half them

We've had one good performance where we conceded 3, an abhorrent performance, and an average performance

We're our usual inconsistent selves

Aye, like I said, no surprise really three games in. It'll take time for the defense to get sorted.

TBH we haven't got the results our performances have deserved. Burnley had 3 shots 2 of which went in (and were crackers too), that doesn't happen very often, neither does having 200 shots and not scoring, play that match 9 more times and we'd win 8 of them and draw the other so it doesn't bother me that much because I understand it was a fluke.

At Arsenal we were unlucky not to run away with it, Coutinho was through on goal and had he not cramped up .... 5-2 would have put the game to bed.

Spurs we deserved to win, anytime Poch says a draw was a fair result you know 100% the other team should have won, and of course there was Coutinho's terrible miss, the disallowed goal, Matip's header off the bar .. and so on. Spurs' best was Dier's header over. We should have won no matter that the stats make it look close, it wasn't.

And what is this down to ? There was a superb assessment on a German website end of last season on how Klopp's tactics were starting to take effect, no matter that the results weren't reflecting it accurately yet. Someone posted it here, it was a long read but superb - was it Rurik who posted it ?

We have strengthened (Milner over Moreno is an upgrade for me, Matip & Lovren looked good together, Karius will improve the goalkeeping situation, Wijnaldum has been solid and a good fulcrum even if unspectacular and thereby not getting noticed by the fans and Mane has been a massive upgrade on the right wing and some of our attacking play has been superb, including a 29 pass move/goal vs. Arsenal, was that just luck then ?

Would I have prefered a stronger LB & CM ? De Sciglio or Hector ? Absolutely. Dahoud in midfield ? Damn right. However let's not lose sight of the progress we have made, I'm still excited for the season ahead whereas some of you sound like you'd be better off switching to following rugby for the season ahead.

Agree with most of the points Frog - but lets not forget a few things here:-

1) We have failed to score from open play in the last two games.

2) I get what you say about Burnly result but the point on that as I have posted previously - is that last season we encountered many teams that setup against us like they did and it seemed that against Burnly we made exactly the same bad decisions and the overall view is that we learnt nothing from those previous games to indicate that we can break down a 10 man wall.

3) The LB position issue - is a big fucking disaster waiting to happen - agreed that Milner is a massive upgrade but like most of pointed out on here - losing him in midfield is actually a loss for us as he is somewhat effective and we are now playing a soft Lalana in that position.

4) On a plus note - I have a lot of confidence in both Matip and obviously like many - Mane too but the Spurs game kind of scared me as I thought Mane would get sent of in the second half. If that is his usual way of playing given that he has in the past had 6 sending off's then could face some serious shit in the future.

5) from the overall attack - if you take off Mane -we are essentially left with last seasons team up front who don't inspire me that much against the lower teams that do defend in numbers.

Unless Klopp figures out how to play against teams that sit back and deny us space to run into, something which he clearly hasnt so far in his career, then we are not going to be competitive. So far Im not optimistic, against Arsenal we showed we dont know how to kill a game off, and against Burnley we showed there is still no plan B
