RAFA BENITEZ and Martin O'Neill will go head-to-head again in a £20million battle for Ashley Young.
Aston Villa are bracing themselves for Liverpool's offer for England winger Young, although O'Neill has warned potential bidders to expect 'short shrift'.

That will not deter Kop boss Benitez, who is also on the verge of winning his fight to keep midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The lure of a Premier League title challenge and Champions League action at Anfield will be tough for Young to resist, especially in a World Cup season.

Benitez and O'Neill fought a bitter transfer war over Gareth Barry 12 months ago. The Villa boss frustrated Benitez on that occasion, when the Anfield board refused to meet the midfielder's £18m valuation. This time Benitez can expect the funds to get his man, although Villa recently slapped a £30m price tag on the 24-year-old.

In another massive boost to Liverpool's title hopes, Alonso is ready to commit himself for another season. Alonso WILL be part of the club's Far East tour having rejoined the squad ahead of a friendly in Vienna tonight. Real Madrid had set a deadline of this weekend for a £27m transfer, but that will pass without a deal and they will not be encouraged to bid again.

Real set a deadline? I'm fairly sure the ball is in our court. Were the ones with the player signed to a contract for another few years.

I'd be happy with Young and Johnson being our summer signings. Although If Young is going to cost circa £25-30M, I can't see Rafa or the club wanting to pay that. Especially considering we'd need an Alonso replacement...

We could get Robben for half Young's price. .

Johnson and young our summer signings now I'd be happy with that the money we got back from the keane deal and the rest of our 20 mil budget on young and keep the rest of the team together sounds great to me

I started the thread about him before villa signed him and i still think we should. Doubt our relationship with the club is good like like like.

Has anyone ever seen him beat a man? I just watched a load of footage and he doesn't seem to even try, he's either running really fast into loads of space on the counter attack or he stops at the full back and crosses with his right. I thought he had a bit more to his game?

he's the black downing.

Keeping Alonso would make this summer ideal.

Ignore all these docile FM cunts harping on about how 'Aquilani, Silva, Young, Sneijder' and any other Carlos Kickaball would "more than compensate".

It should be; Alonso Priority number 1.
Anything else, second place.

Ashley Young's overrated too.

I agree however Sneijder or Robben would be great signings.

Ideal would be keeping what we have and adding a left back? Hrm. Not for me.

Edit.. jesus, left back... I'm going all Rafa.

I can't see us being able to wrest Young away from Aston Villa unless he hands in a transfer request and forces O'Neill to cash in.

I agree that the most positive part of this would be keeping Xabi, but I do rate Young. He was outstanding two years ago and was on his way to bettering that season before the number of appearances caught up with him. I do think Silva would serve us better when trying to unlock the sides that put everyone behind the ball and force us to try and break
them down though.

whats the point of keeping alonso if his heart isnt at our club anymore its at madrids?
id rather take the 30mil or 20+sneijder and sign silva or young with that 20mil.

Alonso is professional enough to still play his best football regardless of feelings, he also has to play to the best of his abilities as its world cup year/

Sunday Times said:
ASTON VILLA have rejected an opening £18m offer from Tottenham for Ashley Young, saying it is nowhere near their £30m valuation of the player.

Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, has made Young his No 1 transfer priority. But the club’s chairman, Daniel Levy, is reluctant to pay more than £25m, which may open the door for Liverpool, who are expected to enter the bidding. It is believed that the Stevenage-born winger is keen to return south and has told friends he would jump at the chance to move to White Hart Lane.

Redknapp broke away from Tottenham’s pre-season preparations last week to meet Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s representatives, with Tottenham ready to pay £18m for the Dutchman. Redknapp told them the club was prepared to make Huntelaar their highest-paid player.

Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by Barnet in yesterday’s traditional pre-season friendly at Underhill. Academy product Sanchez Watt formed a first-half strike partnership with Andrey Arshavin, who opened the scoring.

Attention-seeking drivel.

All reports have pointed towards Xabi's departure, and there's not one person who's happy about it.

Discussing alternatives is kinda natural for a Football forum, but yeah, lets all plea and beg Xabi on 6CM. I'm sure it'll make the world of difference.

We're not going to get Young for 20M.

And I don't know why, but I just get the feeling he'd fail.

[/quote]Quite. He was like this when Garcia was leaving too.
I agree with Ken in this thread. He isnt worth the money we'd be expected to pay for him.

I'm a Young fan.

I saw Villa quite a bit when I was back from Uni, and Young always shone out. I'm not saying he's worth the 25M or whatever, but then I'm not sure Silva is either, so meh.

I'd be happy with either.

you know what you are going to get with young, someone who can take the ball down the wing and cross. admittedly I've rarely seen him go past a player with skill but if you can cross accurately you dont need to, beckham showed the world that.
