Liverpool want Ashley Young

I don't remember Ronaldo or Robben doing that well against us but I still think they are the best wingers about.

I didn't bring stats into this.

You don't need them.

Anyone can see Young's the better footballer
I see young as a kick and rush player with a good cross on him, I'll go so far as to say I don't think in all the times I've watched him see him go past a player using purely skill, not once. he has blistering pace and can cross he's worth no were NEAR what MON will definately ask from him. btw 7 league goals for somone who starts week in week in an attacking position is nothing to write home about.

Its about 1 in 5, which is pretty decent for a left winger.

Reira got 3 for the record.

insults. HOORAY!!! as for dreaming of being at young's level, he (young) got 7 league goal last season and 9 assists starting virtually every league game where as babel got three league goals despite not starting three games in the league in a row.

why the fuck do you bother with him squiggs?

As usual the regular cretins gatecrash a thread with nonsensical jibberish.

And this is coming from a Babel supporter.

Ryan Babel is currently dreaming at being at Ashley Youngs level, which is why he starts most of the time on the bench. On 'his day' Ryan is perhaps marginally more direct and in turn, more effective. But that happens once every 2 months; the rest of the time is spent giving the ball away, making wrong decisions, and loitering around the field pretending to give a fuck.

As previously said, comparisons between the two are pointless
you have no idea how Young would do at Liverpool, it's a huge step up
And you're the worst debater any forum has ever known. Congratulations.

How many players do we sign where it isn't a "step up"? Torres? Nope. Alonso? Nope. Reina? Nope. In fact I'm struggling to think of anyone. The fact Young is 'prem proven' means it's much more likely he'll fit in.
Was thinking about posting something regarding Babel's clear inability to pull his finger out then read this. Did not need to post anything but agreement

It's another dreary Sunday.
Amen to that!!!

Ashley Young is a good player, Neil.

Sadly, he's also shown far more ability in a year than Babel has in 2.

Having said that, he's nowhere worth the kind of money MON will undoubtedy try to squeeze us for.

Non-starter.

when talking about the merits of a potential left sided player you'd hope that advocates could come up with a better arguement than, 'well, he's better than babel', so what, (a) babel cost 11 mil, silva and young will be upwards of 25 mil and (B) he (babel) is in and out of the side so comparisons are harsh.

for me there are only two question I want answers to
a) will he (whoever) score double figures in the league?
b) will he (whoever) help us break down defenses that defend deep against us (i.e. 99.999999% of the entire league)

if the answer is no then we're better off saving our money for a player that is.

being 'premiership proven' means FUCK ALL. keane and pennant are names that spring instantly to mind.

Keane was not given a chance. And pennant premiership proven!!!!!! Please your having a fucking laugh!!!

1. Surely better than babel is a start
2. Babel would cost more than 11mill in the current climate, closer to 20mill!!!
3. Name a left sided player that scored double figures in the league last season
4. 99.99% of the league don't defend deep against, that's probably one of the most ludicrous statements i have ever read. There were teams that defended on mass against us, but there were quite a few teams that tried to play football, arsenal for instance which reduces your stat for 99.99% to approx 95% to start with, include chelsea, Manu and possibly everton then your statement deserves serious ridicule

obviously the ENTIRE football league doesn't defend deep against us but outside of the top four very rarely do teams come to anfield and attempt to play, so anyone who has the luxury of playing will space (i.e. teams that play on the counter attack) is going to have a rude awakinging when they find space is squeezed out of the final third in virtually every game they play.

for the record I actually like young and would like to see him here but I don't think he is as good as some people are making out.

Only because he's being unfavourably compared to your fuckbuddy, Ryan Babel, who you're completely besotted by.

"And Prem proven means fuck all"? Please. Pennant was always a limited winger who was out of his depth, and Keane transfer was never going to work from day one, as 90% of fans will testify to. You have a terrible habit of finding 'the truth' in anomalies, and then reciting them in sweeping statements as fact.

'Top clubs should hang onto young players for longer - look at Glen Johnson and Chelsea'

'Prem proven means fuck all because Keane and Pennant didn't work out'

You're getting as bad as Rebel.
Kewell was an injury nightmare, obviously - it could have been very different. And as said above, Keane never had a role in our system, and remains one of the strangest Liverpool signings in history.

Liverpool have made some dodgy signings from other Premiership clubs, but that doesn't equate to 'Prem proven meaning "fuck all". Managers love it buying Prem provern, and idiot fans hate it, 'cos they'd rather a Youtube star like Mark Gonzalez over a player they see week in, week out.

The fact that he's better than the likes of Pennant and Gonzalez doesn't say much other than the fact that we've been fucking woeful at signing wingers... but we already knew that.

I haven't seen that much of Villa or Young, I'll admit that much. I do recall one occasion watching him and being very impressed though - his crossing was absolutely fantastic and the strikers should have had a bagful. The thing is, I do agree with rebel on some points - which is very rare for me on here - he does look a little on the weak side, he does seem like a bit of a one trick pony and he does fade out of games, particularly when things aren't going too well for the team. I might be wrong given the amount I've seen him, but still, I can't quite get past the feeling that he'd be a very very risky signing that we can't really afford to make.

At 10-15M, it might be a different story, but for 25M and upwards, we simply have to expect someone to walk into the side and have an immediate impact and if they're young, expect significant improvement as well.

I don't really see that in Young. He's a good player, but I just don't ever see him being amongst Europe's best and we're not Real that we can afford to spend 20M on one potential player and then 50M on his replacement in 6 months time.

And finally, a bit of a shit question as the England setup is fucked, but why isn't he ever picked ahead of Downing, Walcott or SWP?

I'll admit I like babel more for sentimental reasons than for his contribution at this present moment in time. I,m always drawn to the underdog in the team than the 'gimme' as its more rewarding if they come good.

going back to my point of naming premiership players that have come here and flopped, isn't this a valid concern, as ros pointed out you can throw kewell on the pile as well.

also I post my opinion as opinion I don't post anything as fact, the only things I can post as facts are stats and even they can be viewed differently by different people.

I plucked a figure from the sky like many on this forum do. my point is more often than not teams will ask us tobreak them down. frankly the biggest reason we lost the league is our failure to break these teams down when asked. so anyone who is going to play in an attacking position for us needs more in his locker than pace.
