Liverpool vs Roma 1st leg pre match thread.

Thats A fucking heartbreaker that like.
 
I don't think we'll get beat, which is making me feel like we will actually get beat, which is making me feel like we will win.... needless to say, my head's a fucking mess.
 
When the draw was made I was confident enough we would progress but my confidence has dissipated over the last week and I reckon we will lose 1-2 tonight.
 
What worries about Roma is their size and our inability to defend from set pieces.

Roma's scouts will have been looking at the WBA game and for the first 75mins, seen nothing much to report.. but after those last 15mins, well, their scouts would have been licking their lips, scribbling one thing in capitals.. "SHITE AT SET PIECES DEFENSIVELY."

Looking at their size:

Fazio - 1.95m
Dzeko - 1.93m
Manalos - 1.89m
Strootman - 1.87m
Kolarov - 1.87m
De Rossi - 1.86m
Schick - 1.86m
Juan - 1.85m

... the best we have to match them are:

VVD - 1.93m
Lovren - 1.88m
Henderson - 1.82m
Firmino - 1.80m

Everyone else is below 1.80m (Joe Gomez 1.88?).

Obviously, having midgets can work the other way and we could keep the ball the entire game and run rings around them (without conceding many set pieces), but you just know whether we are 2 or 3 goals up, that set piece disadvantage/disorganisation can always strike.

That is scarying average hight in the team. However, I think we have been quite solid at defensive set pieces the last period. Not felt that normal agony as soon as opposition got a corner kick.

With sheer bloodymindedness, mate - plus the knowledge that we are Liverpool and, whatever the player stats may say, no-one wants to play us in games like this. As a former goalkeeper for Algeria once put it:

Plus, as tombrown hints, Old Faithful will be on duty.

But they kept us to penalty shoot out. And even if we had the craziest motherfucker in goal at that time I am not sure we do this time around....

Don't be daft man..... Biscan, Cisse, Traore, Baros or Gerrard? I would even consider Gerrard in the Squad anyway today.

From that 84 team on the other hand. Moe difficult.

Close between Stevie, as he can score from range and run their midfield ragged, and Sami, because I think if we can aerially dominate Dzeko, they'll find it hard to get out and do anything against us.

Yeah but my concern is the ol' ticker during these games. Does your pulse rate not go crazy and make you worry that yer gonna have a heart attack?

I don't wear a watch but my wife bought me one that is linked to my phone because I never hear my phone when I'm in the pub. At the start of the City game my pulse was a very normal 67 bpm but went up to 90+ at various stages during the 2 games against City!
 
I'm really really worried that I'm not worrying. This is worrisome.

PS - Did Camus play for Algeria, or has JJ whooshed me?
 
Like Oncy, I have a soft spot for Roma, and will be cheering them on in the final if they manage to beat us.

It was nice seeing the gesture by De Rossi, who I believe has made no secret of his admiration for Liverpool, and particularly, Steven Gerrard, who was his idol.

It should be a great game.

Didi was over here for the Scum game and had some promotion for some wine and also talked about his career. It was quite funny when he was sent warming up in the final as Rafa told him he was replacing Djimi Traore at half time. And after spending the half time preparing mentally and warming up the first player to emerge from the tunnel for 2nd half was Djimi.

Yeah. I also like Roma. They have this aura of arrogance about them that I like. And the true romans in the Club (Totti and De Rossi especially) is good characters. Like them. Love the city as well.
