Liverpool v Southampton League Cup Semi Final Second Leg Match Thread

We conceded 2 goals over two games. Hardly a crisis. Creating and taking opportunities was very much the problem.

Why are you only using this semi-final as your universe? We played two, lost two, conceded twice, and scored none.

That's poor enough, however in the wider context of one win in seven games (and that against a League 2 side) and some abject displays, there's obvious cause for concern

And the fundamental issue, and one that has been apparent since Klopp joined, and before that too, which he has shown no sign of being able to fix, is that we have the worst defence of any Top 8 side in the league.

Because we were playing a two leg tie against Southampton in the semi-final of the EFL Cup ergo this was the universe I was using to comment on.

As regards your perception of what is going wrong then, in this tie, our greater problem (in my opinion) was not scoring. I thought we created decent chances and the expectation that our best striker should have converted isn't unreasonable.

Sturridge isn't our best striker anymore. It's been too long since he was scoring regularly and/or contributing much to the team on a consistent basis. Firmino, notwithstanding the legitimate questions as to whether his goal scoring ratio/whatever is good enough, is our best striker now (and by that I mean central no. 9, because you could probably argue Mane is a better forward as he scores more goals).

It's no coincidence the two teams who have the best defensive record BY FAR in the league play with a proper DM. We play a far too open game. Yeah it's nice on the eye when it's working but leaves us horribly exposed. Klopp's stubbornness to not get a proper DM is hurting us.

Does CL qualification rest on the Chelsea game? That was the aim this season.
Will be a lot to play for even if it goes tits up in the next two games.

I think we'll be ok once Mane comes back and we can have the front 3 that makes us tick.
However, a season without cups and a 'fight for 4th' will be deflating considering where we were at the turn of the year.

Henderson has played well in patches, in a more holding position

That said, I still demanded we buy another defensively-minded CM in every window since Masher left, and that is still the case

We're not tight enough or disciplined enough as a team

But it can't all be about the protection for the defence, because so many of our goals come from individuals in the defence making elementary mistakes.

I noticed last night that Coutinho was playing deeper than usual and was acting as a midfield general alongside Henderson. He wasn't often getting near enough to Southampton's goal to let go one of his screamers which would have been the most likely way of beating the packed Southampton defence.

I'm not saying that Henderson had a bad game, but at the moment he isn't imposing himself on the game enough.

Coutinho had to go deep as their DM denied him time and space in the middle

That meant we constantly shuttled the ball wide, exactly as they wanted, because our deliveries were poor and we had little threat in the area, so he couldn't do much to help

Henderson was mediocre I thought
