Manuel Pellegrini, the former Real Madrid coach, has held talks with Kenny Dalglish over the managerial vacancy at Liverpool despite Roy Hodgson remaining the club's preferred candidate to succeed Rafael Benítez at Anfield.

Pellegrini was dismissed by Real last month for failing to deliver in the Champions League or beat Barcelona to the title, although he did produce a club record 96 points during his one and only season at the Bernabéu. The Chilean's agent last night denied reports that the 56-year-old met Dalglish at Heathrow airport but Pellegrini was in England yesterday and did meet the Liverpool legend who is overseeing the search for Benítez's replacement alongside the managing director, Christian Purslow. Dalglish has told the Liverpool board that he would like the job in the absence of any superior candidates.

Negotiations with Pellegrini, who worked with the Liverpool goalkeeperJosé Reina during a successful five-year spell in charge of Villarreal, reveal that Anfield officials are working through a short-list of candidates to succeed Benítez, although it is understood Hodgson remains top of that list. The Fulham manager has yet to receive an official approach from Liverpool and last night reaffirmed his contentment at Craven Cottage from South Africa, where he is commentating for the BBC.

Asked about Liverpool's interest, Hodgson said: "I'm happy at Fulham. It is all speculation and I can't enlighten you. I don't know any more than you do." An official move for Hodgson from Liverpool is anticipated next week, however.

We're not going to get a manager with better credentials than Rafa, Ryan...I supose we just have to hope we get the best one we can.

So why do we need to sack a coach who is better than the potential replacements?

Silly really.

Because what he achieved at Valencia was not being replicated here.

So what's the point?

I thought Kenny removed himself from that position so he could put himself in line for the job?

I thought it strange that we seemed to be limited to a choice of Roy or Kenny.

I still want a German manager though.

Having read a bit more about Pellegrini, I'm less hostile to the idea than I was. I fear he'd struggle to replicate that fluid passing game with the players we have at the club though. I also fear that if he, say, sold Kuyt and Mascher and bought a boatload of talented South American/Spanish youngsters, they would struggle to adapt to the pace and physical power of the English league and we'd have a potential disaster on our hands. But still... I'll try to stay optimistic.

There's not really anything to suggest he would do that, although I guess managers favour and attract players from their home country (or in this case, South America).

I'm just wary because it's another foreign manager again, from the Spanish league, and one who's not really won anything.

One of those journo dudes on SSN has just absolutely guaranteed that Hodgson is taking over, and that Mascher is being sold to Inter.

Dunno, it's seems the standard speculation of late though. I just mean he's not really going out on a limb, it's already done the rounds and we know both scenario's are highly likely.

Maschers coming across as even more of a mercenary than the average football player in all this. I thought last year it was all about Barca being where he wanted to play, returning to a culture that more clsoely suits his lifestyle, blah blah. Now his agent is all over Inter.....errrr..... if he valued workign with Benitez so much, how come he was so keen to jump ship on him last year?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Yeah he seems a bit fickle. I don't think anyone could question his commitment on the pitch last season, despite all the speculation, I almost felt sorry for him as the reasons seemed to be anything but football or money related. I've had it now though, as Carra said, we want players who want to play for the club. He's a good player n'all but between him, Torres and Gerrard, I wouldn't lose much sleep if he were the one to go.

Had exactly the same conversation in the pub ie which player would you prefer to lose out of the "top set" - ive always been a super strong advocate of Mascher, but he is the one you would prefer to give up (not that it works like that).

I dont think you can fault his professionalism/ ability to get the job done in all circumstances, but it grieves me that he so clearly wants to play somewhere else

Because I think his wife hates Liverpool so much and drones like a vuvuzelah about it to him. He'll go literally anywhere to get her to stop her bitching.

Indeed. Although if she goes to another foreign country, locks herself away in the house, and makes no attempt to learn the language or integrate then she'll likely be in his ear again soon enough.

with regards to a manager being able to replicate attacking football with the players we currently possess, if you have an attacking mentality you'll play attacking football, simple as that. if the players aren't up to it they'll ship them out and get players are, as much as I loved rafa, first and foremost he was a defensive manager and when things are going tits up you'll return to what is most natural to you.

To be fair, it's considerably warmer in Milan, there are loads of other Argies there already, and Italian is much closer to Spanish than English is.

football.

Kenny Dalglish is the only candidate who can restore some trust, pride and hope.

No other candidates will get the same breaks and will be expected to fail, some will back a new appointee wholeheartedly other will simply wait to say 'I told you so'.

The club needs unifying not tinkering at the top. It's never been solely about teams and tactics.

That would all change very quickly if results didn't go our way.

Less quickly than any other Manager is my point.

I think the club is in an unstoppable downward spiral anyway. If not on the pitch then I suspect we'll wake up one morning to find we are in administration and will suffer points deductions.

I love the idea of Kenny being our boss, but the reality of it worries me greatly. Hopefully we'll appoint the best available option to us, and for me thats not the King sadly.

Sorry Jexy, I don't buy into all this doom and gloom. We "might" have a season or 2 of rebuilding on our hands, but i highly doubt we'll hit the depths of administration.
