Depends. Are we assuming in our scenario that Torres is not going to be dogged by injuries?
80m is a lot of money for a player whos spent a lot of the last 12 months on the treatment table.

You heartless mother...

If Madrid offered 80m for torres id take it.

Depends on whether you want to win a league or not.

It took us 5 years to replace Owen, no guarantee and signing could replace Torres, his goals or the partnership he has with Gerrard.

He is pretty much unsellable if we wanna win it next season.

I think we will see silly money being offered for him before the summer is out.

There's no way we'd turn down 80M for Torres. G&H would have that in their back pocket before you could say 'Owen on a free'.

Ronaldo's move was supposedly sanctioned by Taggart but I don't think Benitez would even be party to the conversation if it happened to us. Pray it doesn't. I sincerely doubt we'd get the money to spend.

[/quote]What 17 goals? Bent got nearly that from the bench.

I think you're wrong, seriously. It would cost Hicks and Gillett more than £80m in the personal security they'd need for the rest of their natural lifespans.

So what... Bent can replace Torres?

A large part of why Real is buying Ronaldo has to do with their brand.

Torres is a huge part of our appeal right now, on every single level. He's instantly become one of only two superstars on our team. For the plastics he sells shirts, he sells our brand, and he's a reason to watch. For the real support he is a fucking breath of fresh air, because he's the first brilliant striker we've had in ages.

He's a joy to watch. That matters to me, and it matters to everyone. It isn't as if there are the pragmatists on one side and the Wengers on the other. I can take grinding wins, but anyone who says their smile when they see Torres is on the scoresheet is simply because we are more likely to win, and in no way reflects the fact that you might see something truly special, is a fucking liar.

I wouldn't contemplate selling the best striker we've had in recent memory for anything. You don't your best players, not if they are hungry, young, and you can build around them. He's a special player, and we fucking deserve him after the succession of striker shit we've seen.

Of course you wouldn't. So Man City walk in and say 'here's 700million for Torres, go buy a new ground and a load of world class players'. Farkmaster says 'no no no'.

Thank fucking fuck you're not running the club!

Yup, I want the right people in charge so that when City offer us 700M for one player, we don't turn it down.

Saying that you wouldn't sell one player for any amount of money is just ludicrous. Every player has a price, but some are that high you would have to bankrupt your club to buy them. Those sort of player are Torres, Gerrard, Messi etc. But everyone has a price, everyone.

What's ludicrous is using absurd figures to try and make a point. Why stop at 700M? Why not 100 billion?
