How would you feel if that was the headline today? Would that be enough to soften the blow? Would you be excited about the 2/3 players we could bring in with that money?

I'd be gutted. As much as Man utd must be confident they've got a decent price for Ronaldo, I'd feel sick if we were selling our best striker.

ps - I chose Torres as the example over Gerrard due to his age.

Most of the Utd fans I've come across in the last year or so had long since accepted that they wouldn't hold onto Ronaldo for that much longer and simply trusted in Fergie to replace him. I suppose given his track record of rebuilding teams and their success of the years, it's not an unreasonable viewpoint to take up.

If it was a similar situation for ourselves, I'd probably be of the same opinion - thanks for the service, now off you go to fulfil your dream move.. you've earned it.

In your scenario, I'd feel absolutely sick to my stomach because it'd be totally out the blue, our situation is a lot lot different and our relationship with Torres is fundamentally different to the one Utd fans have / had with Ronaldo.

Depends. Are we assuming in our scenario that Torres is not going to be dogged by injuries?
80m is a lot of money for a player whos spent a lot of the last 12 months on the treatment table.

If we got 80mill for Torres, we could potentially go for Villa, Eto'o, Benzema etc and have a LOT of change to play with.

Who could the scum put on the right wing to get 40goals with that 80mill?

I'm a happy bunny.
Well this season he scored 17 goals. So that many i guess.
I know its heartless but 80m is a risk id take.
I hope im wrong, after all who knows what will happen, but i just know 3 games into the season and hes out for 2 games etc.
A totally fit Torres id never sell. Its hamstrings. They scare me.

Id take £80M in a flash on the proviso that Tevez and Ribery were both bought in with the mullah.

That would be an awful bit of business really.

Who would you then depend on to score our goals you say? The free-scoring Tevez?

Or the French winger who's still to prove himself at highest level?

I wouldn't sell Torres for all the money in the world. (More or less at least).

Torres for 80mill I'm sure would mean we could afford Villa, Eto'o and Ribery all coming in. Mwuhahahahaha

What makes you think that Bayern, Barca and Valencia are all just going to sell for normal prices.

If Ronaldo is going for £80m and Kaka £56, then why would Bayern agree to sell for £30m? It makes no sense whatsoever.

The fact is players like Torres do not become available very often and there is something wrong if you are looking to sell them.

United fans have quite rightly got sick of Ronaldo's unwillingness to commit to the club and if Ronaldo was a fans favourite being sold against his will, then I imagine the fans would be going mental.

Oncy, it goes back to what you were saying over text the other day about it being a 'known and proven' Vs 'unknown' and therefore risk.

I don't want to see is mess the spine of the team, it's taken us a very long time to get it right, even when we thought we've brought top players in the past it hasn't quite worked out. I don't want that risk and breaking what's fixed again. No thanks.

Plus £80million is a hell of a lot of money. But there's no way it would buy all three of those players.

I would agree if i didnt think Torres will spend a third of each season out injured.

"Moolah".  Mullahs are Muslim clerics.

Come to think of it though, Ribery's a Muslim, so you might be closer to the truth than you knew.

If we accepted a bid of 80m for Torres then the press would be full of stories about financial difficulties, the baord forcing a sale etc etc.

None like that about United though, despite them running at a loss for three years now.

I would be utterly devastated, no matter who we might buy with the money afterwards. I LOVE Fernando Torres, and I can't believe you fuckers are all so cold-blooded about it. Football is about emotion as well as finances and logic, surely?

It helps that Ronaldo has more or less been nailed on to sign for Madrid at some point since about 2006.

Ha, just seen an advert on the web:

"Meet the players!

Chance for a free trip to Seoul, and train with the players of Mancheter* United

Infinitely Yours, Seoul"

Nice picture of Rooney and Park, with Ronaldo as the prominant player in the middle!

Better get that changed lads! Pity it's flash so I can't grab an image.

*That is actually the spelling on the advert
It's alright getting 80 million for torres and getting the 3 players above but you'd be laying out £300,000 a week as aposed to £100,000.. Not good for a team in debt...

I agree with Oncy's hamstring concerns. Nando needs a couple of months of absolute rest, instead he is playing against teams of shite in South Africa making these injuries a risk for the upcoming season too.

I'm not sure i'd sell him for £80m. But if a top class replacement was available for £30m ish (i.e. Villa) then the rest would be a massive boost towards getting a new stadium built which is key to our long term future.
