I am just bored sick of the negative vibe that has been hanging around this club for the last couple of seasons. I thought Kenny had changed that but apparently not. A new season is starting soon and I plan to enjoy it as long as I can. If you'd rather wallow in misery then by all means.

Heh.. there's not many getting carried away. I think most of us know it's fairly meaningless. Chill.

So why are you complaining?

We definetly need to see a new CB and LB arrive. Lets start shifting some deadwood aswell.

Some positives from the second half though. Henderson is going to be some player for us.

Irrespective of today's match, our defence has been dodgy for more than two years - ever since that 1-3 defeat against Chelsea in the CL quarters. We really need to address this problem before the end of the transfer window. So many deadwood/injury prone fuckers/consistency problems in the squad... it does my head in.
I'll tell you what does my head in ... people saying we have a crap defence when we only conceded 7 goals more than United in the PL last season !! FFS it was a warm up match and we haven't had close to our starting back four on the pitch together even once yet this pre-season ! Minor issues KK with get sorted before Sunderland.

The fact that we conceded only seven goals more than United doesn't paint the full picture. I can only hope Kenny and Clarke will sort this before the beginning of the season.

Or we might not, given that a full season of competitive games provides a far more valid test than one friendly fielding mostly a scratch team.

I think it's obvious though that while we've got a reasonably good group of defenders (Carra, Agger, Skittles, Flanno, Johnson, Kelly and Robinson), we need a good left back and commanding centre half. The post made earlier was right, things haven't been as tight for a couple of seasons now.

That was embarrassing. I think the defence is definitely a cause for concern. Pre-season or not, we're leaking goals badly.

some points to remember;

1. the players are back after a MONTH of inactivity

2. the sides are a mish mash whose SOLE aim is fitness, often the second half sees a complete different 11

3. several of the first team players who will figure more often than not have not even played

take that into concideration and are preseason friendles worth watching at all much less putting in stock in with regards to the coming season?

Regardless, we've conceded 3 goals in every game we've played. I'm concerned.

I do question why it is we try and get EVERYONE fit. we must have an idea of first team and bench so shouldn't be concentrate on those players and attempt to hit the ground running?

Was it just me or were Hull brilliant? They played some lovely stuff, little triangles, pass and move. They were excellent.

That sounded like a pun, but I think there's some truth in it.

We shouldn't be so worried, we were missing two of our regular defenders today, three counting Aurelio and our goalkeeper.

Reina

Johnson Carra Skrtel/Agger Aurelio

Lucas

This defensive line up wouldn't have conceded 3 goals today. Still, we are looking very shaky at the back.
We do need to strengthen with a top class CB and a top class left fullback.

Might I add that the midfield was an absolute shambles, apart from Aquaman. Cole, Poulsen, Coady and Maxi, what were we expecting?

Yep.. me too.... if Kenny goes with any of those line-ups and tries to sub all 11 players at half time in a league game then we're going to be in a right pickle.

im not TOO worried about the players performance, its only early and the new lads havnt had a chance to play with each other much, im not overly keen on the style we were playing though, hopefully this season wont just see lots of crosses and diagonal balls, although it might accommodate carroll better when we've set up like that with suarez in the team he isnt nearly as effective as when we do simple pass and move play

were we not just praising clarke a few weeks ago for sorting our defence out ? I think when the lineup is settled we'll be fine , although obviously it wouldn't harm to add a proper leftback or commanding centre back .

The only thing that 'concerned' me was from the first 10 mins or so you just got that feeling that we were going to play some shite unimaginative stuff and never score . Sometimes it seem that no matter what we do , change players and manager , we still play the same dreadful uncreative stuff we've been guilty of (at times ) for 10 yrs now .

Under Kenny we played football as good as anyone's, better than almost everyone's in fact, for most of the second half of last season. Disappointing as our showing was yesterday, we have to remind ourselves that we fielded (in effect) two scratch teams for 45 minutes each. There is no way on this planet that yesterday can sensibly be used as a basis for anticipating how the new season will go.

What? Regardless of the fact we haven't played with our first choice back four yet and we haven't put out more than 2 first team regulars in the backline at the same time?

I'm concerned that Rafa was a bit rubbish at times.

As i recall from the 80s, generally speaking the shitter we were pre-season, the better the season we'd have.

Football365 but very valid for knee jerk pre season reactions

I thought about this paragraph between two central stops on the London Underground. The first weekend of last season West Brom were gubbed by Chelsea. Arsenal got a draw at Anfield thanks to Pepe Reina's clanger for 10-man Liverpool. United tonked promoted Newcastle - I can remember the build-up, about how Newcastle actually drew at Old Trafford at the start of the season they were relegated. Spurs were held by somebody in between their Young Boys qualifiers. And Blackpool, in a game that would have been at Bloomfield Road had it been ready, scored four or five at Wigan, making that kid famous for a day or two.

I could add to that now I have had more time to think but I feel I have made my point to my own satisfaction: it is easy to remember league results from last August; incidents, too. But throw your mind back another couple of weeks; can you remember anything from 2010's pre-season friendlies? I could sit on a Tube from Aldgate to Amersham, or Epping to Ealing, and still draw a blank.

Down the years there is the odd story arising from a friendly that sticks in the mind. Alan Shearer ruptured ligaments at Everton in 1997, setting in motion a sort of X-Factor hunt for a new England striker ultimately won by someone with two league appearances to his name. More recently Steven Gerrard, for two bookings, and Wayne Rooney, for a straight red-card offence, were both dismissed in friendlies, leading to some rather tedious complaints from Manchester United and their fans, which surprisingly demonstrated that they did not know the rules.

I have been to a few pre-season games down the years, at different clubs. A chance to see a player who is new to England; a chance to catch up with friends you haven't seen since May; a chance a few seasons back to confirm that Charlton had a sponsorship deal with the only network that you could not get a signal for in The Valley. Who actually won any of those matches, though? I cannot say. Even the Community Shield, which used to stand out whether I went to it or not, is lost these days in the blizzard of four-team sponsored trophies. The world's most hyped curtain now takes more than a month to be raised.

The results of these matches are as meaningless as they are unmemorable. There is a new dimension, a purpose that is about marketing not sport, taking teams around the world (or to venues closer to home, such as Ireland) to entertain and lure in fans who are unlikely ever to get to Stamford Bridge, the Emirates, White Hart Lane, Old Trafford, or Anfield (or to have heard of the Etihad Stadium). It is easy to see why Arsene Wenger resisted the development for so long - and also that his complaints about international friendlies have been weakened by the perhaps Stan Kroenke-led move, now that Arsenal have joined the jetset.

Yes, some players get acquainted with new team-mates, but other places in lineups are taken by unwanted pros who at least get to demonstrate their fitness and therefore suitability for transfer. Entire different XIs play a half each. The top priority for every player is not to suffer the fate of Shearer or that of Rooney, rather than to win the game. Everyone knows these games do not matter. So while I would defend the quotes pieces that arise, I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would publish or read a match report about these occasions.

Do something sensible this weekend. Don't watch, or read about, actual football unless it is the Copa America.

("Actual football" ruling out the SPL, obviously.)

Philip Cornwall

I judge preseaon for what it is.......getting the players fit....however one fact I have come to the conclusion on is.....if Adam starts, Gerrard should be standing in or on the edge of the box during corners and nowhere near the flag!!

the only bservation I want to make and I think it's relevent, preseason or not, is front to back we need to take less touches and move the ball faster. it was almost embarrassing the speed at which hull were moving the ball in comparison to oursleves. maybe a lack of fitness means the players are less confident at moving the ball with one touch.
Apparently the players had a full training session in the morning prior to the game and had a full session the day previous as well Neil.
I am speculating that Hull prepared for the match in the normal fashion thus looking more match sharp.

i seem to remember us having a decent pre-season last year, and then proceeding to flap about the premier league like squid on a korean dinner plate

Exactly.

Preseason isn't about results or performances, it's about getting everyone to the starting line in decent shape for the campaign ahead.
