Keep playing 3 centre halves?

Toure and Sakho for me is the best combination. Touré has been immense and our best defender and he's very comfortable on the deck and offers a threat going forward. Sakho is the best in the air and aggressive as fuck.

Same here. Toure seems to be our best defender, and Sakho for me seems to be playing the next best. Skrtel has been playing well lately, but I don't think he dislodges either of those two for me.

Did you see the Agger stat above? Thoughts?

I looked at his last 34 appearances in all competitions which stretches back to to September 2012.

The best are teams like Swansea, Southampton, WBA - the vast majority were against teams that got relegated.

So lets dispel the myth that Agger is some sort if "über-defender" - he awesome when we're playing teams we're dominating and who don't put him under pressure - he gets caught out of position & isn't fast enough to gloss over his positional deficiencies.

He's never stepped out of the shadow of Sami Hypia - and that's not necessarily a criticism - and he lost key development time through injury.

There are many things I admire about Daniel Agger, unfortunately his defensive abilities are not as high up that list as they should be.

I'd go two at the back. Not too bothered who starts. If I had to choose right now i'd prob pick Toure and Agger but i'd be happy with different combinations as Skrtel and Sakho have done nothing wrong.

No one has said he is an über defender and truth to be told I hadn't checked which teams he had played against, but he did feature alongside Skrtel when we kept a clean sheet against United this Season which you seem to have missed.

And as everyone else in the league after all have played the same teams the premise is quite valid, why I don't quite buy the criticism. Not that it surprises me the very least, I just don't buy it.

Yeah I did miss that - was looking at previous seasons stats.

You're never going to buy anything that gas "criticism of Agger" on the label though 🙂

I don't think him and Skrtel work particularly well together, to be honest - I think he needs Toure beside him because he doesn't organise the defence as best he could.

I have become more aware of Agger's flaws on my older days mate.

I do think however there's reason to believe he is sometimes massively undervalued on these boards, which perhaps is seen as make-weight to my at times often amazing praise of his ability. Some of the more vocal posters on this site never fails to tell everybody how average he is, even though he obviously isn't, our Vice Captain.

Agger has been the best and most consistent defender in our squad for the last three seasons (if you see the stats, he has also played more than the rest, there definitely is a reason for that. It's not as if we were too short of options in defense. We have had good competition through out). Only a Lucas lover or a KHL hater would dispute that.

If we are trying to find answers for our defensive frailties, we first need to address our poor imbalanced midfield. Our squad is filled with players who do better when played further forward, and we deploy them as CM or DM. Lucas has been the only DM since Masher left, our short and long term thoughts should be along how best to rectify this, if we are to achieve something this season.
