Joe Allen

I always liked him at Swansea and was glad we got him, but had begun to wonder if he really was suited to us. Lately, though, my doubts have fallen away, and last night was unquestionably his finest hour in a red shirt - at a time when it was badly needed. We are going places and this lad's going to help us get there.

I like Joe Allen as a footballer, but I feel like he only has the power in his legs to play in a midfield 3, for like 75 minutes of a game. After that, he needs to be substituted. He hasn't got the engine of a Henderson, Toure, Ramires.. more powerful midfielders who come on strong late in the game.

Mind you, the same can be said for Gerrard and Lucas nowadays. With the latter being distinctly average for most of the game, even when he is fresh.

Yeah you've always rated him. I must admit he was great last night. Probably our best player.

I said this in the Sakho thread - you have to be prepared to give players time. I got it wrong re Flanagan, people were seriously questioning Sterling 9 months ago, everyone gave up on Henderson after half a season, and let's be honest - the abuse Joe Allen took was staggering. It's not just us though - Frank Lampard got booed by his own supporters when he was at West Ham for fuck's sake, and look at the career he had.

Not everyone walks into a new team and is Suarez, or Wayne Rooney, it fucking takes time for players to adapt.

That's why I never got the Joe Allen tirades. He could always clearly play - in fact, his first half season with us was very good. Then he gets injured badly, is in and out of the side, our form dips and all of a sudden he's shite and a woeful waste of 15 million. We've had 6 months of what a "beast" Sakho is, and 12 hours after a defeat last night people want him sold.

I don't get it.

Allen's quality. A lovely lovely footballer, with a touch as good as anyone in our side. His attitude is exemplary, he fits into how we play, he works his cunt off, and he can fucking play football.

I quite agree - Strange phrasing regarding the 'he works his cunt off' comment tho. Surely 'socks' would suffice 😉

I agree with that, Ryan. But I don't think Flanagan has a future as a starter with us. We need to improve on him, but he's a decent squad option.

I don't know about that. I'm amazed by his improvement in his touch on the ball.

He's a good dogged defender as well. He doesn't have the pace or natural overlapping abilities of a great full-back, but considering the improvement in his technique, there's no reason to say why that won't come as well.

Agreed, and I'd add that he's switched to the left-hand side as though he'd always played there. I've got hopes for him, definitely.

A decent game at te end of his second season is just not good enough.
And Lucas is even worse, we badly need to buy two good central midfielders...

Allen was outstanding last night, well bar that celebration, man of the match definitely. He and Henderson are a title contending midfield, imagine the laughs if that was said 9 months ago?

Am I the only one who thought Allen was good in patches bit overall a bit 'meh' last night?

I like him as a squad option but still feel he doesn't consistently contribute or impose himself enough on games.

Ryan is having a Joe Allen kind of day. Finally a a good one to match all the shapes he's thrown 😉

Now, Here's another one. Villa could win tomorrow and we'd need a win for the title (I know we don't want to even think it). Oh and we went from 7th to second in a season.

Yeah technically he's alright. People do waltz past him, though, on occasion.

Well I've said he was a superb player from the moment we got him so he's sure to go to shite soon.

Just a shame Lucas couldn't step up like Allen has.

Allen has been our best player in our last 3 games

Fuck me, a lot of goodwill for Allen on here ('superb player'????)

I hope he kicks on next season but sadly think he'll remain a cover player for more talented/imposing others.
