Would there be a more physically imposing midfield in the world than De Jong, Toure and Martinez?

It'd bulldoze teams.

It'd be a strong midfield alright. De Jong seems to be out of favour with Mancini this season though. Barry has been preferred in most games.

He is better at his age than Xavi,Sneijder,Alonso etc were.

I really rate Martinez but I don't know about that claim above. He's 23 years old now. At 22 Xabi Alonso took that penalty in the CL final and the season before he guided Real Socidead to 2nd in La Liga. At the same age as Martinez, Sneidjer moved to Madrid for big money after being a regular for Ajax and Holland. Xavi has been in the Barca side since he was 18 and a cracking player by the age of 23. Of course all three matured into even better player and Martinez could follow a similar path.

Don't get me wrong I would love him here just don't fully agree with your post above dude.

Can some post the link to they sexy mazy run and goal he scored a few seasons back. I've always felt he was a bit sluggish but he has great feet and composure just like Xabi did. Watch his team mate at Bilbao, Herrara. I'm gonna be blue in the face from name dropping him, he's a star.

Didn't Riijkard had him as a bench player most of the time though?

I think I read someone on here before alluding to that before but I don't have the facts.

Snippets taken from wiki.

An injury to Pep Guardiola in the following 1999–00 season meant that Xavi became Barcelona's principal playmaker, a position he has retained ever since.

He was the vice-captain in the 2004–05 season. In the 2005–06 season, Xavi tore the ligaments in his left knee in training; he was out of action for five months, missing the majority of the playing season, but returned in April and was on the substitutes bench for the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final .

Can't see any mention of him being benched for a sustained period of time. Just read that he had 26 assists in the 08 season. Sweet Jesus. I know, we've taken the thread off in a tangent but that's an insane stat.

GOT TO JAV HIM...
Hi Guillem, I have been a lifelong Man Utd fan and I have only started reading your columns. I have to say you sure do know your stuff about Spanish football... I have one question to ask you and that is about the several rumours surrounding Javier Mascherano from Barcelona and Javi Martinez from Athletic Bilbao respectively? There are several newspaper reports here in the UK and Spain that they are both rumoured to be on their way out of Spain and heading towards the red side of Manchester for a change? Thanks Guillem. Ebrahim Hassan.

GUILLEM SAYS: Mascherano has no intention of leaving Barcelona, so that kills that story. As for Javi Martinez, a club from Manchester has been in touch with him - but it's City, not United. By that I mean, they have called his agent to discuss the price of taking him away and they were quoted 40million euros, which is his buy-out clause. There's four years left on his contract, so he'd be a very expensive player. He's willing to leave, but at the moment that's as far as it's gone. Just a few calls.

If you were to spunk an excessive ammount on a holding midfielder at this day and age there'd be no better bet than Javi Martinez based on what I've seen of him.

He's even taylor made for the Premiership as well.

We missed the boat on Ander Herrara. Bilbao bought him for 5-7 million. He is going to be a star, that kid.

Yeah but can he tackle? Can he play a 50 yard pass into touch? Can he run really fast? Can he get box to box? Can he do all sorts of other completely irrelevant things like the ones I just asked for?

Runny really fast isn't his niche then again neither was Xabi's.

He's classy as fuck, moves the ball, can spray it long or keep it simple. Willing to join in with attack, good in the air, strong. Great player.
