January signings?

I mentioned this in another thread, but it probably deserves one of its own. Rafa is saying in the Guardian today that he hopes to have cash to spend in January -

Benítez admitted he expects to recruit more first-team players when the transfer window reopensin January, although he is not sure whether he can receive an advance on Liverpool's new £20m-a-year sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered, which will come into effect for the 2010-11 season. "We haven't spoken about when money will be available, it is too early," said Benítez. "But we will talk about January because clearly we need to do something."

What positions do we think Rafa is targeting? RB and LW? Back-up striker? I'm not mad about January signings, but if I had to choose one of those positions to target, it would be striker. The new rules really make it a necessity to buy English though, so who could we get?

Maybe some surplus strikers who are not getting a game might make themselves available. IS RVN getting a game these days?

regards

Heh, normally you get the whole "yeah, but the squad is good enough at the moment and if we can add some quality, we will" spiel, but this time it's "we clearly need to do something".

I'm feeling real relaxed about this season!

Morientes isn't starting at Marseille...

I wish I shared your feelings Ken, but our squad seems wafer thin at the moment. We have a few injuries at the moment, but nothing out of the ordinary and look at our bench against Burnley.
Now, against Burnley that was not a huge problem. would you feel comfortable if we went a goal down against United or one of the other contenders and one of our key players took a knock, with this lot to turn to (apologies to Jay Spearing)?

Cavalieri (gk), Kyrgiakos, Spearing, Dossena, N'gog ,Voronin ,Degen

I wasn't being serious Vlad.

In the space of a few days, we've had Reina voice his disappointment over our summer dealings and now Rafa's comment clearly indicates that he feels the squad isn't up to scratch.

Whatever though... we'll just have to see how the season unfolds. Maybe we'll see a bit of luck with injuries, on the field... and things will work out.

Sorry, not a morning person, I missed it

We need a few more options on the bench half capable of changing a game. Pacheco would be one option, but not the answer

Rafa, you clearly had all summer to do something, what's changed? Clearly.

top players don't move mid season. except anelka 😉

We got Agger, Arbeloa, Mascherano and Skrtel in January transfer windows

I'll rephrase that, top class ATTACKING players don't move mid season...except anelka 😉

So the more simple conclusion to reach is that we don't sign many top attacking players, and certainly not in January?

Also Bentley went to Blackburn in January.

I said top class attacking talent 😉

what would we want to buy in january for? champions league players will be cup tied and league challenge (if we're still in it) the likes of silva and probably any other continental player will struggle coming in january and fitting in, getting upto speed etc

so that leaves outside top 4 premiership players. who'd be on the shortlist?

Arsenal signed Arshavin in January despite the fact that he was cup-tied for the CL, and he was brilliant in the league despite the fact he was a 'continental player getting up to speed etc'.

yes arshavin is an exceptional player but it was too late for them for the league by the time he came in and they got destroyed by utd in the champions league.

i'd like to think we bring in someone who can make the difference between winning a trophy or not and i'd rather it be the league. i'd love to poach a villa or spurs attacker/winger in january, especially if it seems they'll be out of the top 4 for another year

Like who, Young or Lennon?

They'd both cost in excess of 20M, are not that good... and it'd never happen.

i'd take young. may not ever happen but imo he is good enough.

anyway rafa hould have done better getting rid of players in the summer instead of wanting/needing to sign players in january. babel, doseena and voronin should be cleared out in january at the very least

Might as well take Messi then. At least then, in this hypothetical world, we'd win the title.

We are not going to be able to buy an English player i think. They will all be shite value for money as far as this season is concerned.

If we are still in with a chance we should sod the new FA ruling and go and grab a continental player who may actually help asap.

do you think these players should be earning tens of thousands a week and clearly not good enough to get a game? they're not even real squad players ffs. we should have done more to sell them than complain about needing money for new players.

doseena, voronin and babel will cost us at least 7 million in wages this season.

Voronin and Babel will both play there part as subs, theres no need to get rid unless a good offer comes in. Dossena, well with the state of Fabio's injuries, we need him as back up for insua.

I'd take Carew. Not that Villa would sell.

Pavlyuchenko? I don't think he's amazing, but he would almost certainly be available.

that will apply to any squad player who isn't a regular starter.

Not really, considering most of our squad players are kids.

You really are short sighted.

Do you seriously think that by selling the 3 you've quoted and thus reducing the debt on the club from their wages, Liverpool can buy a star player that can turn a game, is cheap from a wages point of view and can provide cover from injuries, give another variation of attack or defence?

No, didn't think so.

Case of writing without thinking first.
