James Milner

Can we all stop mentioning freebie signings for RedNinja to comment on as if they in any way shape the future of Milner's potential Liverpool career.

53 international caps
383 domestic top flight appearances (36 goals, 59 assists)
Home grown player
Title challenging experience
European football experience (played in all 8 of City’s Champions League games in 14/15, 6 of them from the start)
Offered more money elsewhere (Man City's £165k offer)

[Henderson is reportedly on £100k/week.]

Any other realistic midfield targets who can match the above, and at lower cost?

So Sterling can't play as a false 9 and Milner can?

Sterling finishing is awful.... though he is young.. so time is on his side...

Didn't Milner score a few goals for City playing as a false number 9 ?

I suppose its a good option to have....

He's better than a lot of what we have and he'll be happy to be here. It's a good signing.

We should be looking at strikers, defensive midfielders, full backs, centre halves, and goalkeepers, before considering who are the best value CMs to go for.

Doesn't necessarily means we aren't doing those simultaneously? (why else are we linked with Ings, Clyne, Benteke, Marshall etc. Aren't CMs, are they? - emphasizing on their positions rather than "worthiness"). Signings don't have to be sealed and announced in terms of priority, do they?

[article]Jamie Carragher says James Milner will compete for the Liverpool captaincy if he completes a free transfer from Manchester City.

The England midfielder is out of contract this summer and former Liverpool defender Carragher is hoping he will finalise a move to Anfield in the next fortnight.

And the Sky Sports pundit says Milner could now rival Jordan Henderson both for his position in Brendan Rodgers’ midfield and also as a potential successor to Steven Gerrard as club captain.

“Brendan Rodgers will have spoken to him about where he sees him fitting in but he's very similar to Jordan Henderson,” Carragher wrote on Kicca.

“I have no doubt one reason he's joining is to play in a more central role rather than out wide. Could Milner play a holding role? Maybe, but I don't think that's what suits him.

“His main strength is his engine which could suit him and Jordan to both play alongside a holding midfielder (Emre Can?) but his best position is tucked in from the right in a central role which is also Jordan Henderson's so it'll be interesting how those two fit into next year’s midfield set up.

“The fact that Brendan Rodgers wouldn't confirm Jordan Henderson as this season’s captain even though he was captain in Gerrard's absence last season makes me think him and Milner could be competing for the armband.

“Was that another thing that enticed Milner to join?”

Milner has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup since joining Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2010.

But after he started just 18 Premier League matches last season, Carragher applauded the 29-year-old for his willingness to move to a team that isn’t playing in the Champions League.

He added: “I think it's a very good signing - a free transfer who can play in a few positions and got great experience.

“A good character which you can see from the fact he's left Man City in the Champions League for Liverpool.

“That shows regular starts mean more to him at this time than being a squad player with more chance of picking up trophies at City.”[/article]

Looks like Carra thinks the Milner thing is nailed on then.

Well, Carra might be assuming things on the basis of "no smoke without fire". Either way, IMO he's right in most of what he says.

Every signing carries risk, but those wages won't be excessive if he really is as important to our progress as the club seem to think he will be, especially as there'll be no transfer fee involved because he'll be out of contract..

Might be premature of Carra to predict that Milner could give Henderson a run for the captaincy when Rodgers probably has just not had enough time or balls to call this knowing his own future isn't sorted yet. It would be a bit silly announcing Henderson as captain and then Rodgers gets the boot after that, rendering another round of debate on who should be the captain.

I don't think Carra's being premature. Hendo's the guy in possession, so more or less by definition anyone else who might now come into consideration would be competing with him for the armband.

Replacing one first team player with a better one is all good in my book. Gerrard out, Milner in. On current ability I would prefer to have Milner in the team.

That logic should be amended to "replacing one first team player with the best one available on the market".

The whole so and so is better than what we have presently is precisely the sort of logic that led Rafa to waste so much time and money with pointless squad tinkering.

Echo reporting a wage in the region of 150k.
The sign on fee is specualtion at best.
Some say one year salary etc etc etc.

He's 29 and nothing like the Joe Cole deal.
Milner is seriously underrated on here.

I doubt we're giving 150k a week.
He apparantly turned down a lot more money at City and that offer has been touted around at 165k a week.

How is it "nothing like" the Joe Cole deal? We're getting someone on "a free" which is anything but. They are never going to be in better condition than they are now, and we're paying a ton for a known name, coming from a club in a better position than us that no longer needs them. And most of the board is excited about it (just like with Joe Cole) seemingly, because he's going to cost a fuck ton of money in such a way that we'll be stuck with him, and he's good but not great.

Bellamy is a more cheerful example of what you can do correctly.

All depends on the numbers. And I think, as I said, he's more useful to us than Joe Cole, and the context isn't the same as our financial situation is better. There's certainly a cautionary tale there of how expensive signing someone with a bit of a name out of contract can be.

I agree, in an ideal world, if you're Manchester City for example, but we cannot buy the best on the market cos we have a very limited budget.
