James Milner

Twitter spazzeratti. Didnt you start a thread about our bid for Kovacic based on Gazzetto Dello Sport?
120k is from Di Marzio I think, which is about as credible as your link.
I think you are confused Hansern. That was the Kovacevic thread.

Signed at 29 on a free.. Never played as often as some thought they should of been... Both can play on the wing or in the 'hole'

Though Milner is not injury prone..

On Paper it is a decent signing.. but I do worry, as our history with 'free transfers' over the years has been appalling

James Milner and Joe Cole are massively different players, Joe Cole was a luxury flair player, James Milner is an industrious but effective midfielder. This is closer to Gary Mac than it is Joe Cole.

He'll be fresh for us then.

Probably won't need a mid-season break in the caribbean either.

Sure, but I'm disputing the idea that he's some kind of favourite of Pellegrini. He's been a squad player for them: a good player but no more than that.

I think he's better than Henderson but only marginally. Whichever way you cut it the huge wages equate to something like a £15m fee, for a 29 year old who doesn't really address any of our weakest positions.

Why is there such universal approval for this deal? It looks questionable at the very best.

In my case it's because I'm a footy fan and have no interest in how LFC spends it's cash.

I think he'll be good at footy. For us.

There was universal approval for most of our signings last summer as well. Now last summer is seen as a disaster.

As I said earlier, I've advocated his signing in the past and do think there is a lot to like in him as a player but yeah, I agree, I don't think this signing is as as much of a no-brainer as is being suggested.

I'd like to see how he fits into our transfer window overall but I've come to learn that if you're waiting for some brilliant grand plan to emerge as a Liverpool supporter you're going to be disappointed more often than not.

*their*

Thanks.

Unsurprisingly you miss the point: you can't write it off as their cash and still invoke the notion of it being our club. If it's their cash, we can't share in the proceeds of its investment; if the consequences are ours, so too are the actions.

Our share of the proceeds is in the emotional investment we give, the vicarious pleasure or pain we take and the tribalism with which we defend it.

I spent many a year supporting the club never once thinking about how it managed it's money. I suspect the majority didn't. This preoccupation with finance is a product of Premier League and TV finance.

I just think James Milner is a good footballer who would improve our chances of winning matches. What money it takes or what promises he receives to play for us is a matter for the club.

The 15 million is spread over 4 years so it's not like an outlay on a new signing. Also if we signed a younger player for money we'd still have to pay them, so the outlay would be similar. If we get rid of even a couple of the players that are contributing next to nothing, the fees received plus the reduction in wages would more than cover the cost. Two of our weakest attributes last season was creativity and fight, both of which Milner has in abundance. It could be a very smart signing.

We've got Gerrard off the books, so he can have his wages. And a couple of million signing on fee. The same goes for Ings - He can have Johnsons's wages and a couple of million signing on fee.

We lose Gerrard and Johnson, and gain two players that at least 1 of will improve the starting 11. At hardly any extra cost.

Great bit of business if it comes off. Not every player we sign can be a Messi. We're looking at signing 1 player that's better than any midfielder we have, and another striker that's better than all bar one of the strikers we have on the books.

I suppose some people would propose we sign Pogba and Lacazette instead for 100mill, cos they'd defo come to us.

What does it matter if the 'fee' is spread over 4 years? In any case, conventional transfer fees are generally paid in instalments anyway.

Exactly. I imagine Milner has a fair few fans worldwide too. The clean cut clean living image is seen as boring here but is lapped up in the far east, so it's safe to assume that will be worth something to the clubs image which may help make up for the loss of Gerrard a little.

No one knows what the fee is anyway, so it's all guess work really. Also, you can't really quantify a fee until you know whether the deal has been a success, so making judgements about the initial outlay, overall outlay or potential fee received further down the line is pointless. If he's a success, no one will give a fuck about the money.

I get that there are concerns, but it seems a no brainer in terms of his availability, experience and pedigree. I understand people having concerns about knock on effects on other transfers, but I'm looking at it as others have, he's replacing what we've lost with Gerrard, but will provide a bit more leg work and discipline in the middle of the park, which we are lacking, regardless of other priorities.

Your missing my point..

I am happy for the signing.. but given our history on free transfers, you cannot but help but worry...

Garry Mac is good shout though..

I wonder if he will get the captaincy or not.. has to be a good shout..

He is a leader.. (poor the Hendo)

He didn't miss your point. You made two completely contradictory points with no explanation provided. And the notion Milner will fail based on the failure of previous free signings is just ridiculous. Judge each case on its merit. There isn't a curse hanging over us.

er.. did I miss something ?

Gary Mac, Aurelio, Litmanen....

Only Gary Mac was could be considered a complete success out of those 3..

Aurelio spent more time getting injured whilst playing with his kids...

Litmanen was unfairly never selected by Ged...

That is something he definetley will do over Gerrard.. He will have legs.. How though much I don't know as he does get substituted a lot at City...

Anyway, despite my worries.. I do hope Milner is a success.. His attributes alone will help bring much needed Leadership to the team... If your hunch is like you say that he is to be named captain, it is probably a good shout, hendo is a future captain.. he cannot have too many complaints if Milner is picked over him..

I think it's largely down to timing. If the club announced this deal at the end of the Summer dealings after we'd secured some sexier signings, then I think the reaction would be unanimously positive.

You thought he played in the hole 3 hours ago.

As Squiggles pointed out, I didn't miss your point, there's just absolutely no comparison between the two.
