James Milner

I think you'd be hard pushed to find anyone negative about his football. Inevitably any gripes will be about money.

He has skill, is professional and a winner. We need a leader on the pitch and I think he can be that. He's senior enough and has sufficient respect to be captain. Our young players can hopefully learn from him.

I'd be very pleased if this deal gets over the line.

If there are any gripes, it'll come from the usual idiots who don't like him because he doesn't have the technique and swagger of a foreign player. I can't think of many midfielders who have played a fairly sporadic role but can weigh in with around 8 goals and assists a season from a number of midfield positions.

With Gerrard leaving there is a void for direct free kicks, which Milner can do, not sure about corners though but Gerrard wasn't particularly good at those anyway like the rest of the squad.

Good player, excellent signing. Experienced, hard working, better than all our midfielders bar Henderson, still in his prime and free. You would have to try pretty hard to find something to bitch about on this one

I think he's actually better than Henderson.

I wanted him years back before he joined City so I'm delighted to eventually get him. Getting him on a free will represent one of the best signings in the league this year. He's exactly what we need and exactly the right time and will cost relatively little money. I'm all for it.

I'd be more than happy about this. I think it is a very smart move.

I'm happy with the signing, but only if we bring in a marquee signing else where (Striker)

Though this has the Joe Cole signing written all over it..

He's a very good player. I hope he does come in. I'm not sure how he fits into the midfield in the current lineup, hopefully in place of Henderson, keep him as a backup. If we go back to 433, I'd play him and a proper DM behind Coutinho.
I'd be more than happy for him to be captain instead of Henderson also.

What, in that they're two players with barely any similarities?

You're happy with it but you think it will end up like the Joe Cole deal? And you wonder why people think you chat absolute shite all of the time.

Important signing - now let's go any spunk a lot of money on an incredibly sexy, goal-scoring uber-forward who's name isn't Benteke or Ings.

I think we do anyway, regardless. Allen hasn't nailed a place and is too capable of one great game and then a handful of average/poor ones, Lucas doesn't look like he'll be here longterm and has had his injury issues in the last few years. We definitely need someone a bit dominant in the middle (Can?). As for Milner and Henderson playing together, their similarity aside, I think the outlook is that both are capable of weighing in with more assists than their positions would naturally dictate, so that's a big asset to have when you have both of them possibly contributing around 8-10 assists a season in the league alone.

Just as an aside, I hear that one of the things we've offered Milner is the captaincy.

Laughable if true.

We need someone who can add composure and class to the energy, work ethic and tenacity of Allen, Henderson and Milner (if he comes).

Can I like a lot but I'm not sure he's that player and even if he is, he doesn't seem to be ready yet.

I look back at a lot of games we've lost and we really miss someone who just knows how to 'manage' a game and not drown like a lot of our players do. That for me is a real missing ingredient.

It's not really is it? He's experienced, has won titles, gives balance and composure to a side and he's solid and works his bollocks off. He's exactly what we need in that sense. I'm not sure we need a typically aggressive captain, I'd rather have someone who's got a cool head and is reliable in big games.

The offer of the captaincy presumably, and I'm not sure I agree. Hendo's improved in the role, and I get that he gees up those around him like Carra used to, but there's something about the way he carries himself when talking to referees or confronting opposition foulers which suggests to me that he's almost having to force himself to look "captain-ish".

The captaincy bit.

Why?

Model professional - hard working - mature - talented - actually can show everyone some medals.

I'd say, if he does sign, he should be a prime candidate - I'm not convinced Henderson is any where near ready.

Henderson is clearly a captain in the making but he could have few complaints if Milner is selected ahead of him., especially given the team fell apart towards the end of this season. Rodgers has rightly taken the slack for the players not being motivated at games, but some of that criticism has to be directed towards Gerrard and Henderson.

We're offering him 150k a week, guarantees of starting in his favoured position (where we're already well stocked), and now the captaincy too!

It's James Milner. Not fucking Pele.

An article says we're offering that, another article says we're offering significantly less than the £165k City have offered. And we're not "well stocked", unless you count Allen and Lucas as long term, week in week out certainties, which they clearly aren't, nor should be. Ideally in the longterm in centre mid, we have Hendo, Milner, Coutinho and Can. In an area where we often play three players.

No.... a journalist has claimed we're offering him £150k a week (as if he'd actually know), Mark had heard we're offering him captaincy (and I'm sure he'll admit to not really knowing), we aren't "well stocked" in his preferred position (Henderson, Can, Allen, Lucas) and he's arguably better than all of them anyway.
