Well we need a replacement for Gerrard and we need quality in midfield, so it's not an unnecessary move, he's a good player and will be a valuable asset. We need a right back too, so we'll have to replace Johnson, are you going to say the same about going for Clyne? We need a quality attacker but spunking the entire wad on one isn't going to suddenly paper over the other cracks in the team.

We don't need a replacement for Gerrard IMO. He was fairly rubbish by the end.

We do need a replacement for Johnson, and Clyne looks a very good choice.

We've replaced Gerrard (and his wages) with someone that has played far better than him this season (and probably a few before), and is most likely to next season. This is a good signing. I couldn't give a fuck about the money because 1.) the wage bill isn't actually going up overall from signing Milner, and 2.) no one gives a flying shit about signing-on fees when we renew coutinho or henderson's contracts, do people think they resigned for free also? I didn't see anyone bleating on about it then.

The main goal is to firstly improve the first team and then the squad, and this signing is inline with that. He makes our first team better.

I didn't see anyone going on about it when we were going to boot Rodgers, Ayre and co either. That would have been a hefty pay off.

I'm very happy with this news. Ok, he's not exactly in the "world class" category, but he fucking works his arse off, give it 110% and he's consistently good. He's miles better than anyone else we have in the middle, and he's versatile.

Although I have an awful feeling it's gonna be all downhill from here, regarding any more summer signings, judging by who we're rumoured to be looking at.

Underrated aspect of this signing is that it replaces some leadership in the dressing room. Milner is a two time league champion and seasoned international, he has walked the walk and will certainly provide leadership through example as he works his arse off every match.

Really happy as well - excellent experience, attitude and professionalism, will be a starter for 5 years. Also, don't correct me if I'm wrong, but there was a couple of seasons at villa when he was a must for dream teams for goals and assists.

If we get a decent DM we'd have the ideal players for a midfield diamond. Henderson and Milner are perfect for the shuttling box to box roles

Is it just me or do we have a lot of British players?

It's all a part of the master plan. When the Boston lizards sell the club to some oil rich middle eastern lizards they will already have their quota of homegrown players and then can splash all the cash they want on fancy Dan stepover masters from the Iberian peninsula and South America.

I didn't say "free", I said "on a free" meaning (as if you didn't know) no initial transfer fee. The wages will certainly be considerable but I doubt clubs mix up capital and revenue expenditure like that when making these decisions. If we do, we definitely *are* in trouble.

We do Jules (sort of), and the owners were pretty clear about it from their initial assessments of the club... it blew their minds the amount that the club had to pay in wages to players who were no longer with us; whether this was the single key motivation or not, they definitely said expenditure needed to be calculated in terms of the total outlay commitment (ie how they report the value of Baseball deals in the US which obv dont have transfer fee component).

I made the point earlier when a few people were saying "sign Ings and Milner for free then weve got 2 okay players for nothing and can spend the transfer fund on a couple of big signings" - the owners will look at each "free" and assess that each probably commits us to 10-15m of expenditure that needs to be factored in when assessing whats left for the manager to spend.

Having said that, I'm quite pleased with the Milner signing. He undoubtedly improves our starting XI, and is very low risk.....also forgot that he was a £26m signing for Citeh (and clearly has 5yrs of top tier quality left in him)

@BoringMilner

The best thing about an away game in Manchester is that I'll be home & getting stuck into the ironing pile before I know it.

I think that's how we will line up as well. We seem to be bringing in 3 new strikers (Benteke or AN Other, Ings & Origi) to go with Sturridge and that would suggest 2 strikers to start and 4 in midfield. The 2nd striker will have to be capable of moving out wide which suits Origi and maybe Sturridge if necessary with 4 workaholics in midfield to ensure we keep our shape.

This pre-supposes we sell Sterling (which we will) and that would leave us plenty of dough to throw at a top class DM or pivot midfielder as well as the new striker. Those 2 acquisitions will make or break the summer for us.

@BoringMilner

I've just realised that we played Sheffield Wednesday on an actual Wednesday. You couldn't make it up could you.

During the World Cup

@BoringMilner

I said to Gerrard It was just like watching Liverpool when you set up Suarez. He said This really isn't the time for Jokes, James. I said Ok
