James Milner

Great news! He instantly becomes our best central midfielder, winger (much better final product than anyone else), and fullback. I think he can be successful in any of the CM roles, including DM. He is characterized as hard-working (a la Henderson), but he is also extremely smart and can change games.

I would fully support him taking the captain's armband and keeping Hendo as his deputy. Henderson has the same potential, but he is not there yet and would benefit massively from Milner. I actually think he will be a much better captain than Gerrard and more suited to maximizing the end of his career. He does not have Gerrard's raw talent, but is a much more intelligent player that will serve him as he gets older.

Thrilled. Actually, could be our most important signing of the summer - by some distance. And, I don't think that is an exaggeration.

Yeah city fans are weeping today. Truly devastated.

They're not exactly jumping for joy either though are they.......plus they've had 18mths to get used to the idea.

I also suspect if we had Yaya, Aguero, Kompany et al, and were winning leagues and cups left and right we wouldn't be quite so effusive over the benefits of the more mundane players like Milner either.....

I'm as happy at this signing as I am about my lovely new sun tan and dazzling array of Cuban car photos.

*heads to beach* ;-)

Just saw Tony Evans' (The Times) tweets. Over-reacting much?

Tony Evans @TonyEvansTimes
I like Milner. But could you imagine him being the highest paid player at any other club with CL ambitions? At any age, never mind 29?
Most of you are missing point on Milner. He's good player. But if he went to Arsenal, would he be top earner? Think what it says about LFC
And get over this 'he cost us nothing' bullshit. Like Joe Cole cost nothing on 140k a week.
The signing tells us number of things 1) 'philosophy' does not exist. Which is not a bad thing. But it is concern there is no coeherent plan
2) Short-termism is back. They want to get into the CL asap. Probably to make the 'asset' more attractive to buyers
3) there's a recognition that young teams struggle without leaders. Thought still think 150k per week is expensive for a babbysitter
I'll try and cut through the hysteria and bellendery for you. 1) FSG are no bad owners. They are not taking money out. They spend income
2) The money has been spent badly, though. Recruitment process at LFC is flawed at its heart. Too many short cuts. Short cuts rarely work
3) The thought process of owners has changed from a long to medium term plan to short to medium. Sale not imminent but now sooner than later
4) In eagerness to get things right, Mike Gordon has had more influence on football side of things. I'm all for transferable skills but...
5) The concern is that Rodgers will start season with a squad he doesn't believe in. Is he pragmatic enough to make it work?
He did for a spell last season but then it fell apart.
6) Hard to escape belief that seasoned chief exec and better scouting would have put club in better place. But that's conjecture, I suppose
7) And last point. Where did scouts come from? Man City. It always bothers me when a club that can outpay you choose not to. Nagging feeling
Sure you don't want to hear any of this, So for those of you who don't, he's the alternative view: EVERYTHING'S GREAT!
Oh, and another thought for the 'he's on a free' gang. What does Sterling think today?
You probably don't care but it makes you think about how resources are being used. Not sure which side of that argument I'd be on, tbh

The odd good point among all the dross can't disguise Evans' enduring bitterness about the fact that, for a long time now, he hasn't had the access he used to have. He therefore has a permanent "glass half empty" outlook on the club and isn't worth bothering with as a serious commentator on it.

IF BR keeps his job - and I MEAN 'if' - it's because FSG have been turned down by CA/JK/etc. My info was 100% sound. FSG want(ed) to upgrade

Does any other club conduct its transfer business as transparently as we do? In the good old days (here I go again), we knew nothing of who were signing until the photograph of Peter Robinson, Bob Paisley and AN Other player appeared in the Daily Mirror.

Surely this has an impact on the deals that follow? Agents will have looked at what we're reportedly offering a 29 year old in terms of salary, playing assurances and potentially even the captaincy and they'll be rubbing their hands with glee.

Judging by his picture he's some divvy going through a massive midlife crisis.
2 pairs of sunglasses and a backwards baseball cap.
I fully expect some blonde highlights underneath that baseball cap, probably recently purchased a motorcycle too.
