James Milner

I think this is the crux point really, I like him and think he'd be a perfect fit for us, but we're overloaded with players that can do the same. We've got better natural wide men and a younger variation of him in Henderson. If it meant him coming in and us shipping out players like Suso, then it's a bit too short-term in it's thinking. I do think we have to replace Suarez with a "couple" of players though, Markovic might well be one, but hopefully we can pick up a player of similar ilk upfront.

I think Milner could be good for us as an energetic all round midfielder, like Henderson. I don't see that we have many players like that. Can would be the only other one, and judging bu the state of Lucas he might be tied up standing in for Gerrard.

I also think we need more experienced players, especially ones with trophy-winning credentials. I like the policy of buying excellent youngsters but they have to be complemented by older leaders as well, and Milner might be one available at a reasonable price.

I have to say, it's not just Lucas the player, I can't stand the idea of reading stuff on this forum about Lucas for another season.

I agree Peter, I just think it's a bit of overload in an area where we're already well stocked. Even if Lucas were to go, we'd still have Can/Gerrard, with Henderson, Allen, Lallana, Coutinho , Suso (maybe) and then Milner vying for two positions. Something's got to give. I know they're all pretty versatile and a couple of them can play on the flanks or in the 2/3 attacking roles, but if we buy one more top attacker than it's looking top heavy in midfield and attack, with more than two players per position.

For six positions we potentially have:

Lucas
Can
Gerrard
Hendo
Allen
Lallana
Suso
Coutinho
Markovic
Borini/Remy
Sterling
Ibe
Sturridge
Lambert

With the potential for us to spend big on an attacker, that's around 14-16 players for six positions.

Ibe, Borini and possibly Lucas wont be in the mix though.

I hope Ibe gets a Premiership loan where he is guaranteed loads of playing time

but like I said, if Borini isn't, Remy will be. Even if you take Lucas and Ibe/Suso out the mix, people would still want a big attacking player to come in. With Milner aswell it's still 2+players per position. As great as that is on paper, we thrived last season on continuity. In fact, the only area of the team where we chopped and changed was precisely the area of the team that cost us the title.

*I know we're in the CL, but it still doesn't necessitate an overload - just a few more additions in each area to add depth. We need some big quality in certain areas (CB & replacing Suarez), but we also have some good young additions to supplement what we have too, Ibe could save us a wad on a top winger, for example.

If Milner wasn't 28, then it'd be a great move for 15mill. He's a good good player.
CIty aren't going to let him go though, lazy journalism. They're leaking home grown players as it is, without them losing their good one.
