Aston Villa want to make former Republic of Ireland captain Andy Townsend their new Director of Football, according to a report in The Lying Rag.
Townsend was a fan favourite during his playing days at Villa park where he made 134 appearances between 1993-97.

It is claimed that Villa chairman Steve Hollis wants to promote familiar faces to the board to restore the unity between the club and its fans.

The Villains will be relegated this year after one of the worst campaigns in the history of the Premier League.

The report claims that Townsend is excited by the role which will see him oversee the playing squad while also making key decisions in regards to selecting a new manager for the upcoming Championship campaign.

Fans react with dismay to report that Aston Villa want Andy Townsend as Director of Football - Independent.ie

I love to see pundits put their reputation on the line.

Saw him going into my local pub once. Got out of a blinged up Range Rover in a shell suit with his beshellsuited family. We were pissed sitting outside in the pub garden. My mate shouted 'Oy, Townsend, where your fucking tactics truck?'. He gave us the Vs and a smile.
Since ITV fucked him off he needs a job, and this would be hilarious.

Have you heard Dwight Yorke recently? He's making an even bigger twat of himself than he already is, and I didn't think that was possible. Having styled himself 100% Manc for the past few freebies, I mean years of freebies, I mean years, he's now suddenly remembered he played for Villa, and is going on radio shows asking for the job and even claiming Ginsoak has 'endorsed' his candidacy. Apparently his argument is his total lack of any proper credentials ensures that the club can start 'afresh'. Mad as a bunch of frogs.

Any appointments from the current owners will be a disaster, even with the best will in the world.

Fucking Hell.. AV as a club is a complete joke.. Got to feel sorry for the fans..

This is what happens when when your owners lose interest I guess.

Thing is these are a big big club, in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the country,.. Enough encouragement there to make it work..

They should dissolve themselves and then reappear as 'Jeff Lynne's Aston Villa'. Get all the players to wear identical 1970s sunglasses. Then make every match seem exactly the same as the last one.

And their anthem could consist entirely of a compressed snare drum sound over and over. Sorted.

You have absolutely, positively not got to feel sorry for their fans. Hilarious in every way.

My fave goal ever was the Fowler turn against Staunton. I was in the main stand and it just seemed to fly in a straight line with my view. Perfect. Think it was 3-0 after 10 mins, then the rest of the game was shite.

McManaman was great that day.

Fowler didn't even win goal of the month because Kinkladzie decided to round 6 players before scoring for City the same week.

What a goal that was from Fowler, arguably his best.

I loved the flick over the head one against Bergen, but I think the Villa one was better. The awareness to know where Staunton was good enough, but then an exceptional finish from 25 yards to finish it off. It was an amazing goal.

Both great goals but I'm sticking with the one against Brann Bergen. The Villa goal was class but the Bergen goal was an outrage, of the best kind.

The one against Brann was just insane. He had a great one against West Ham aswell.
