They were born in Ireland but it was the idiots who watch the x factor who created the monster that they became. The British brought it upon themselves.
I think there are more important reasons than the sheer numbers playing the game (look at Holland and Uruguay etc) but I've always thought it can't exactly help that perhaps half the population just don't go in for the sport in a serious way. For whatever reasons, only a tiny, tiny, fraction of footballers come from the upper and middle classes. A big part of that must be because they just don't play it that seriously - it's not part of the culture in the way rugby and cricket are.
