I get your reasoning I do, but I really don't think Gerrard is the one he should be replacing.
Lucas imo would be the obvious choice with Henderson and Gerrard then holding the line, Allen just in behind the striker with Suarez and Coutinho on the wings with license to roam everywhere.
Allen hasn't offered anything as the most advanced midfielder when he's played there during his time with us. His shooting is quite weak, and he never made those incisive final balls the way someone in his position, be it Coutinho for us or players like Xavi, Silva, Oscar, etc can make.
He's the player that's supposed to help us keep possession and keep things ticking. Forget the '50% better as an attacker' bollocks Rodgers came out with.
Which means really that he can only play in an 'inverted triangle', as one of the two ahead of the dm (4-3-3).
I don't think Lucas is capable of doing it on his own back there, and Gerrard simply can't run around the way he used to.
I think his best bet at the moment is to play deep together with Lucas, or to replace Gerrard. So a 4-2-3-1 with Coutinho the middle of the 3, Suarez and Moses either side of him. But he has to prove he can get his form back.
I know the reserve team's pretty much all about the youth nowadays but I wish we could have given him a few games there to see where he's at..
