Would have been an easy one after a recent thread, but Cuntona.
When he left United? Not really, since they won the treble 2 years on. The following season they won nothing granted but they soon recovered.

Maybe when he left Leeds but he wasn't there long anyway.

Shearer was irreplaceable when he left Blackburn. More so that Alonso, who was quite easily replaceable, we just didn't do at all.
How should we have gone about replacing him mate?
I think I probably agree with Avvy on this one. There aren't many players around just like Alonso but we could have reorganised in a better manner than we did.

not fucking once, have I seen wilko give his opinion on football, not fucking ONCE, he just turns up to comment on my spelling and tell me my jokes are unfunny. bravo! fucking, WELL DONE! regardless of how right/wrong my opinion is with regards to football I suspect people would rather read that than the single lines of a comedy critic.

like I said, wilko, I've fucking had enough of you, put me on ignore.
You do know you could just put him on ignore don't you?
That would appear to be the obvious solution.

Arse lost their fair share of irreplaceable talents:

Henry, Viera, Petit, Overmars, Bergkamp, Pires and co. and whilst their football methodology never suffered, their ability to finish the job through the course of a season did.

The single biggest loss in Footballing history was Ronaldo to Real.

Last summer, Scum lost more than 60 goals (Ronaldo, Tevez) yet still challenged on all fronts, a testimony to the manager and his tactics.
I meant Leeds, actually.

I dont think Alonso was replaceable like-for-like, but we could have gotten someone in and changed the formation.
Leeds were on course to win it in 1992 anyway really and he wasn't even there for a full year. It did have a negative effect on them when he left of course but I don't even think they would have done as well the following season with or without him.

1992 was a bit of a strange season all round. United were just becoming good, ourselves and Arsenal suddenly became shit and Sheffield fucking Wednesday finished 3rd!! For a well organised side it was not an especially difficult league to win in those circumstances

Yup, Arsenal's reliance on youth has always lowered the risk of losing their top players, because they already know the standard of his replacement before he takes over, and there's no adjustment or settling down issues.

Agree about United too

arsenal have a good plan and seem under no pressure to win silverware meaning they can blood those young players. how would the liverpool fans react if roy said he wants to kick a couple of years into touch whilst he bloods the more talented of our younsters?

United suffered a slight 'dip' (by their standards!!) in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Not sure if this was to do with players leaving or just the opposition getting better (which obviously Chelsea did). My memory fails me on this and I really can't be bothered to go and check.

Given that we are not going to be challenging for a lot in the forseeable future anyway I think many would react well to it. At least it would seem like we are building something rather than going through crisis management like we always seem to be at the moment

Ultimately that will always be Wenger's flaw. He cannot hope to win the League with a stream of (however talented) kids.

Just cause Scum did it, that should be considered an exception rather than the rule.

He needs to mix and match it with a few more mature 'superstar' signings to really have a crack.

Yes, they starting winning it again after he left, which seems rather odd.

In the last ten seasons they have won it 5 years - four of which they had him up front. Although in reality it obviously isn't really the case. on the face of it he was dragging them down!

When is their stadium going to be paid for? If he can just keep them going, finishing top 4 whilst bring young players through until the time when they have more money to spend on big name players then he is doing a great job

As to the actual topic:

It's not just about Xabi. We're underestimating the impact of losing both Sami and Arbeloa to say it's all about Xabi.

Sure, we lacked ideas in midfield, and that affected us massively as an attacking force, but we were shit at the back as well, an area we're traditionally (well, in recent times) solid in.

Arby at left back and Sami against the hoofers would have rescued some points, for sure.

And I think if Rafa had tried something different, rather than trying to replace Xabi with Lucas - like putting Stevie back in midfield, it might not have been so bad

One last word of advice before I really do need to go to work.

Don't change jobs to become a pimp. You'd waste a lot of money on buying a warehouse.

For what it's worth spidey, I think Bilko is an unfunny, supercilious bore.
come on for fuck sake you must have found his pimp joke at least mildly amusing

It wasn't that odd.

They had a dog shit, awkward midfield comprising of a mix bag of Djemba Djemba, Neville, O'Shea, Fortune, Butt etc....

RVN carried that team for a few seasons.

Ps-Alan Hansen is the biggest loss ever to a club. 20 years of dominance ended with a dodgy knee.

Scholes was injured for a big chunk and Keane left to Celtic having played only a handful of games.
