Has a player ever left as a Premier League club and it's damaged them as much as it's damaged Liverpool with Xabi Alonso?

Which other players have left a club which are unable to work, operate or function without them?

Cheer me up. Tell me we're not alone in this mess.

We replaced Alonso with a total spastic (Lucas) and/or a spineless shithouse (Aquilani)

If we'd replaced him with a good player, we'd have been OK.

We didn't.

And we weren't even that brilliant when Alonso was here. The team was still not quite right in all sorts of ways
 
It wasn't just him leaving. We beat lots of teams without him the season he went - including the mancs 4-1 away.

On my arbitrary scale, say him leaving was -10 for morale. Replacing him with a shithouse crock was another -15. Losing the first two games was another -20 and then sticking a fucking useless belter like Lucas in there instead was another -25.

It was the Alonso snowball, caused by weak management that was issue. Him alone wouldn't have been so bad.
 
I thought losing alonso would hurt us, especially given his ability to take the ball off the defenders toes and start attacks, I couldn't have imagined in my worst nightmare it would have hit us THIS hard. hindesight is 20/20 but maybe we should have held him to his contract and lost him on a bosman at least we'd be making the CL, which we would have done with alonso last season, at a canter.
 
This isn't b/c of Xabi Alonso. It's because of two straight very poor transfer windows that resulted in us gaining players (bar Magic) that contribtued little to our 1st 11.

Ha, I've just been thinking about it all morning.

I know Xabi Alonso was not the only reason why we're in here, but I'm still struggling to find a player leaving a club and it cost them as much as it has us;

United coped after Keane and Ronaldo left. Villa have done okay without Barry. The next test big test for a club will be Arsenal whenever Fabregas departs, but they've already got a prospect in Ramsay, providing he recovers.

Whereas we descend into a functionless mess.

Shearer being replaced by Michael Owen is the only thing which springs to mind.

One last word of advice before I really do need to go to work.

Maybe when he left Leeds but he wasn't there long anyway.

I meant Leeds, actually.

I dont think Alonso was replaceable like-for-like, but we could have gotten someone in and changed the formation.
 
If we had 'replaced' Alonso with someone like Barry, the difference in our play would have been no where near as bad as it was. We replaced him with Lucas, that's why we missed him so bad.
