Before we got Balotelli, I had been pushing for using Sterling as a 4th, emergency striker if needed. I still think he can fill that role, so I'll go with this:
Mignolet
Manquillo Skrtel Lovren Moreno
Gerrard Allen
Henderson Coutinho Lallana
Sterling
Sterling won't be an out and out striker reliant on others to supply him though. He'll occupy their backline from side to side, pull wide and draw the CB away, or drop deep to take the ball and run at his man; he's the closest thing to Sturridge that we have right now, minus the deadly finishing, which I think he's well capable of picking up on.
The onus will be on the three behind Sterling to make the runs into the box, or to complete the neat interplays with Sterling so he can do so - something which I think all three of them are capable of and (in the case of Lallana and Henderson) have demonstrated their ability to do this season (less so Coutinho because of his earlier form and because his role is usually to orchestrate outside the box).
That front four is excellent on the counter, pressing high up and recovering the ball, and tracking back, dropping down to defend. If we want to play at speed and with a high tempo, that's the quartet I'll use until Sturridge returns. I'd hazard a guess that we will also start seeing improvements in Markovic's performances if / when we can consistently get a high-tempo game going.
