He played well, let's buy him!

I've no doubt that goal for Wolves played a part, but Shanks suggested in his book that he'd been considering Alun Evans for some time before we moved in for him (unless that was just my reading of what the great man said).

And yes, I believe he may have been the first teenager to be signed for a six-figure fee.

Didn't remember that - was it really 110k??? That was an absolutely vast sum at the time.

Yes Wikipedia says £110K so it must be true! Alun Evans had a fairly short career with Liverpool, but he did score some memorable goals. He got a hat trick away to Bayern Munich and the German TV viewers voted one of the goals the "goal of the month."

Which shows that the Germans can be fair-minded. 😉

I actually wrote to the club to ask them to sign Eden Hazard after he played against us when he was about 17. Never got a reply. It was my only letter by the way, honest.

Indeed. As another example, I was on my year out in Germany in 1973 when we played Moenchengladbach in the final of what's now the Europa League to win our first European trophy. We had a 3-0 lead from the first leg of the Final, but when we went over there to play the second leg the Jairmens went two goals up and we resorted to some pretty nasty tackling to preserve our rapidly diminishing lead. We managed to hold out in the end and the papers next day were full of praise for us, lauding our professionalism and being quite open about the fact that Gladbach would have done the same had they needed to. I remember thinking even then that the English press wouldn't have been so even-handed if the boot had been on the other foot.

I remember that game Jules! I think Ron Yeats was still playing for us at the time and there was a photo of him diving into a tackle with his famous extendable legs, looking like one of Michaelangelo's Giants, and the headline "They Shall Not Pass!" 🙂

That was, what, 6 years ago? I expect it landed on Rick Parry's desk which would explain the lack of reply.
